I'm looking for help and ideas about potty training/learning. My son is 2.75 and has been using the potty every so often for the last 8 months. At first, we simply had a potty around and talked about it a bit, and let him use it on his own terms. He was really interested last summer, but then lost interest, and we moved 5 months ago, so we didn't push it for a long time. We know that some unfortunate potty-related event happened with at a sitter's house about a month after we moved that made him not want to use the potty for a while or go back to the sitter. Whatever it was scared him, but I don't think it was intentional on the sitter's part. Now, he goes between being interested and excited about it a couple of times a week to bursting into tears at the mention of it at other times. I've tried naked time, but he really doesn't like being naked (never has except for in the bath). I've also tried stickers for using the potty, and he likes getting them but not enough. He likes wearing undies and will say that if he's wearing undies he should use the potty, but he almost never does. We're starting feel frustrated because this has been going on for the last 6 weeks now, with no real change one way or the other, and our diaper covers are starting to give out. Any ideas?

I've just come here for the exact same reason. DS will be 3 in August. We've been training him on and off for the past 6 months. He has gone potty and poopy on the toilet in the past, knows where he should put potty and poopy, thinks it's fun to wear undies, and has been rewarded when he goes.

The biggest problem and the last big hurdle is having him tell us that he has to go before he actually goes. We decided to take a break around 2 weeks ago because he just wasn't making the connection to tell us ahead of time and we have a newborn baby. I thought that it would be best to just put him back in diapers and not talk about using the toilet unless he brought it up.

A couple of days ago he started mentioning going on the toilet again and was talking about the toy tractor that he will get when he is out of diapers. Today we raon out of diapers so I decided to just put him in undies until DH came home with more dipes. I was really hopeful that he'd respond well but he went potty and poopy (2 seperate times) in his undies. The worst part is that he didn't even come up to tell me. I discovered it on my own so who knows how long he was wet and dirty.

I just don't get it. He is a really bright kiddo. He just will not communicate his need to go.

I feel like I need to read a book or something to help him. My 2 oldest kiddos were soooo much easier than this!

Married to DH 7 years and have three fantastic kiddos! DS 6, DD 4, and DS 2 ...... lo and behold another is on the way!

Consider changing your approach to something more structured, like hourly visits to the potty. Some kids don't just get the whole "do it yourself" approach. I really like Diaper Free Before 3.

I just wanted to say that I went through something similar with my ds. No new babies (he's an only), but we moved twice, and it was just too much to do potty training while moving, changing daycares, etc. Anyway, on his third birthday he decided that he was a big boy now, and didn't need diapers. He hasn't worn be since. So, I really wouldn't worry about it - you probably have enough on your plate right now with your newborn and other children, and potty training is hard sometimes - he might just not be entirely ready and waiting a few months might really make a big difference.

I would encourage you to still praise him when he does choose to use the potty, and take him to the potty first thing in the morning if you can (or have your DH do it), and then right before bed have him sit on the potty.
