My 16mo ds keeps unloading everything he can reach on our bookshelves (games and books, mostly) to the point that I don't want to keep anything there anymore.

Someone remind me that I'm going to miss this stage... because I'm not feeling it right now. :-(

This stage will quickly become a memory!  I remember it well.  You can stuff your shelves instead of emptying them by putting books in so tight they are wedged in and he can't pull them out.

For a while there were stuffed animals there.  Now the bottom two shelves are DD's books.  And she only tosses them all on the floor a few times a week!  (26 months) We do the "wedging them in" method with the 3rd shelf.  It really does work wonders.

Yes, wedging books in was helpful for us. sort of. Once ds realized those books weren't going to come out he then used said books/shelves as a climbing apparatus to reach breakable objects on the shelves above. Needless to say, I moved my things (to my closet shelves) and only put kid stuff on the bottom 3 shelves until ds was past that stage. It didn't take very long and I do miss his climbing. Crazy! I know. But I do miss his determined little self.

I converted all toddler height shelves into 'montessori style' accessable areas for the lil guy. Put kids books or puzzles there, medium and small baskets filled with appropriate toys and things, rotated the contents occasionally. So like one basket just has trucks, another has blocks or legos, another with instruments, another with magnetos, etc, and I rotate them when he seems board/hasn't touched them recently with something new.

We have done this too. Pretty much our entire house below three feet is for his stuff!

Yep, I know the feeling! I recently installed locks on my pantries so THEY at least are all child-free! I'm so excited about organizing them again and not having the bottom shelves for DS stuff and the highest shelves for food. It'll be so nice!

However, the bookshelves and other unlockable areas are still DS territory.....
