Hi everyone

I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with a spirited and sensitive toddler. My son will turn 3 years in a week and a half. He is extremely sensitive and very spirited.

Has anyone had any experience dealing with the issues that come with it? The tanrums? The crying? The utter saddness?

TIA
~Leslie

Hi

I have actually been dealing with it carefully. I have learned to recognize the cues and have in turn been teaching him to recognize them too. It's been a long road though.

Not only is he sensitive to loud noises, crowds, itchy clothes, tags, etc. he is also easily overstimulated. He can only take so much and then he snaps. It's really sad to watch. It physically hurts him to be put in those situations.

On top of all that he is really energetic. He likes to be moving often but he also requires his quiet times and his alone playtime.

My suggestion is to just try and see it coming.

I read a REALLY wonderful book: Raising Your Spirited Child
It taught me a lot about myself and how to help my son. I highly recommend it

Yeah if you haven't read spirited child i would encourage you to. It helped me realize that my dd is normal and great just the way she is. People seem to think many of traits spirited kids have are "bad" and I was starting to look at other kids and think stuff like - why can't you be like them? why do you have to be the only kid here screaming and throwing yourself on the floor - every five seconds!!
It made me feel normal again and I need that.
Now I have a lot more confidence - and I need that too!
If you do a search I think you'll find a lot of threads (some pretty recent!) talking about how hard it can be sometimes and how to deal with specific issues.

ITA about the book recomendation!
A very wonderful homeopath also recommended for us to use a homeopathic remedy called pulsatilla and also chamomilla.I have seen a huge difference in them lately, and it helps to sooth me to!I would totally recommend talking to your HP if you have one. Also do a search here on sppirited/highneeds children. We have had MANY threads about our wonderfully full of zest and life children.

I have another book to recommend. I am reading it now, but so far am impressed, and feel it addresses the very sensitive child really well.

Aletha Solter, Helping Young Children Flourish

The author's institute, called Aware Parenting Institute has a web site here:

http://www.awareparenting.com/

And her parenting philosophies embrace AP. Very insightful. Hope this helps!
