DS loves the dishwasher. Specifically, he likes to unlock it, open the door, take out the bottom rack, roll it across the kitchen floor, climb onto the door, stand up and grab stuff from the counter above the machine, then climb into the empty machine. (I don't usually let it get that far, but he's a quick little sucker!)

When I remove him from the situation, he whines and cries. We've had lots of luck with cabinet latches for the other things in the kitchen that he loves to get into, but I don't know exactly how to go about childproofing the dishwasher. Any ideas?

When my dd was that age, I kept gates to keep her out of the kitchen unless she was contained in her booster. Too hard to baby proof a kitchen, imo.

We used the "oven lock" or "multipurpose appliance latch" that we purchased at Toys'rUs but that you can see here:

There are plenty of other potential options, too.

I second the safety 1st multipurpose latch. We are using that for our dishwasher. I have seen them or something like them at target and walmart. DS actually figured out pretty quick how to lock it and he thinks he is really helping when I let him lock it. I am hoping the fascination with the dishwasher wears off before he figures out how to unlock it.

We actually went through a roll or so of duct tape to keep DS from the dishwasher. He went through a stage (of about 6 months or so) of nonstop going after the dishwasher. It was easier to just tape it shut and the latch linked above didn't work for the dw (it did work great for the fridge though).

In June we purchased new appliances and new counters so we didn't want to go the tape route and we were lucky because our son outgrew the phase.
