I went to an interesting talk on age appropriate toys. They pointed out most shape sorters are not appropriate for young toddlers. There are too many shapes and it requires an adult to open the sorter for the child. Often, by the time the child is able to open the sorter, they are too old to be interested in the toy.
That said, I found a great shape sorter, except it is plastic. I am putting the link here so you can see what it is. Essentially there are only 3 shapes and the baby can put their hand in through the cuff to get out the shapes. My son didn't "conquer" the sorting until closer to 2. However, he was able to pull the pieces out quite young.

Do you have a link to the one you are planning on? I searched for one and think I found it. It looks good. I do wonder if there is only one block of each shape. What are the chances of the block getting lost. Could it be replaced?
