We have a little yard and an almost-3yo who would love a slide to play on! I want to avoid the ubiquitous plastic Little Tykes type of thing, though. (I'm sure they are great for all the families who have them, but the space we have for a slide is very visible from the street, and I find the bright plastic an eyesore. ) We also don't have nearly space enough for a swingset (and we prefer to use public playgrounds, anyway).

Does anyone have, or know of, a nice backyard-type slide? Wooden would be especially nice. Or has anyone built one and can give tips or links?

Thanks!

Meg, BFARing mama to two spirited daughters, born at home June 05 and April 08.

Hi Meg,

I have a book that gives instructions for making all sorts of indoor/outdoor climbing/sliding toys. I'm sure Thom would be able to make something pretty easily. You guys are welcome to borrow it. I haven't made anything yet because we are seriously lacking in the tools department. But there are lots of things that I'd like to make.

I've never seen an outdoor wooden slide for sale anywhere. I have seen less-brightly colored plastic slides (maybe by the company step 2?). Honestly, when we lived in Goshen we had one of those plastic monstrosities (two slides and a tunnel) for our kids and they only very rarely ever used it. The novelty wore off very quickly. The only outdoor play equipment that I've seen really get used with any lasting frequency are trampolines and sandboxes. A water table can also be hours of entertainment when it's warmer out.

Lex, I should have asked you first! I'd love to see the book you have.

It's "Rings, Swings & Climbing Things: Enhancing Your Child's Development with Easy-to-Make Play Equipment" by Rita Hoppert, ED. D., copyright 1985. I assume it's out of print, but you may be able to find a copy through a library or ebay/amazon/etc.
