M&D STILL hasn't improved those things?!? We bought one for my now 8yo, when we has 1yo. I shared in your frustration with the top not staying on, but not for long, I'm not one for pointless toys sitting around, and my DS *really* wanted to play with it! I glued strips of velcro onto the top, just on those two notches. It was just the right strength that my toddler could get the top off. I also called m&d and told them that it was a problem and how I fixed it ... I guess they didn't care

When I tried to get DD to put the shapes in she'd just lift the lid and toss them in. She looked at my like I was crazy for trying to make her do it the hard way. Yeah, we've mostly used this for stacking and color sorting.

That Melissa and Doug shape sorter is one of the worst toys we ever bought.

The Tupperware shape shorter, on the other hand, is one of the best:

You can find plenty of them used on ebay, too, if you're so inclined. Both boys have loved it, it is well-designed, challenging, and fun for them.
