I'm going to start shopping this week for Christmas gifts. I can't think of what to get for my almost 17 month old daughter. I like the kettler trike but I think that would be better for her second birthday. Give me some ideas please!

Ooooh, a fun post!

a slide
good ol' wooden blocks
duplo blocks (or quatros)
a stand to help you in the kitchen
a play kitchen is great at this age, or just the play food
tool bench
dollhouse
puzzles
art supplies
some form of teeter-totter or rocking horse toy
bath crayons and fizzy colors (you can make your own bath bombs that are gentle without colors or scents if you prefer, just baking soda)
a bubble machine
books. my kids got obsessed with holidays at that age (they still ARE that age) so lots of books ABOUT christmas would be good and get use the rest of the year
a mini table for art, snacks
a spinning pod chair from ikea!!! Miracle toy!
tent
a flashlight
aquadoodle
a puppy (just kidding)
lacing or beading toys
stickers and a box of butcher paper for the wall
a keyboard
if she's ready for a trike, she may be ready for those 3-wheel scooters -- the kind with 2 front wheels, not 2 back wheels, are easier

Also, judging from the other post about animals, a zoo or aquarium pass for the year

I have a daughter who will be 15 months by Christmas. I'm thinking about getting her a doll and a doll stroller. I have no idea where to buy the dolly that's in my head though. Something Waldorf style with a soft body and simple face, that you can also dress. I really only buy one biggish gift for each child. I read something last year on MDC about how to figure out what to get your child for gifts, and it was.
Something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read.
I love that idea.

YOu should check out Joy's Waldorf Dolls. They have kits that you can order to make your own, you can even buy a premade head and have all the body parts pre-sewn for you. I just ordered the 10" Brother & Sister Kit, which according to Joy, is the right size for a 2 year old. It comes with the fabric to make your clothing, but Joy said the dolly will stay pretty naked until the child is about 4 and able to undress/dress it.

If you order pre-made everything, you can pick it up for about $40. They retail for around $100 or more. Plus, it's special because you made it and you can make it look like your child.

I also recommend the spiel & holz nesting boxes. They work as blocks, garages, drums, cups, cooking pots, nests, whatever your lo can think up. Probably some of the best $50 I ever spent!

DS is hopefully getting a wooden kitchen for Christmas (if I can swing it) as his "big" gift. I have also picked up some wooden instruments at a consignment shop and an easel that I found at a yard sale this summer for $5. His current favorites are his Radio Flyer trike (four wheels push with your feet deal) and a regular trike that is small enough for him to reach the pedals. He is also insanely interested in books that show real pictures of things to name such as animals, alphabet books, etc.

Oh, I would second the Spiel and Holtz nesting boxes. He received those for his first birthday and they have just recently become one of his favorites as well. Perfect for stacking and knocking down with a huge CRASH!

Formerly single Mama to the zaniest boy on the block, born on my birthday on 3/28/07. Soon to be Mama to a new little and can't wait to bfinfant.gif and femalesling.GIF and familybed1.gif again!
