Train set for 4 year old - Mothering Forums

My DS's birthday is coming up, and we'd like to buy him a train set. He loves trains, and we own 1 small one. The dining room chairs become a train, lego, cars and trucks... so it's time for a real one.

I wanted a Maple Landmark, but my DH saw the price and...

I noticed the KidKraft recommended, but I see it's part MDF. Is it that bad? Would Yukon Express, Maxim or even plastic Step 2 be better?

I'd like to get it soon.

www.trainsgalore.com has great prices. We did Thomas, but they have other sets there too.

Liam LOVES his ikea train set. We bought extra rails and wagons and he has a blast with them.

Check out Craigslist. We have seen a ton of great sets there inexpensively. I just recently saw a table, large Thomas set and the storage drawers for $75. They last forever - my son has my nephew's much loved and played with set and it's now 14 years old and still fun.
