Hi Mamas,

About a month ago, I got a real doozy of a blocked duct in my right breast. I tried to work out the block, but was not successful. I popped what I thought was a milk blister with a tiny pin. But now I suspect it wasn't really that since it didn't seem to help me. Anyway, I decided rest would help, and I went to sleep with half my breast hard as a rock. The next morning I nursed, and it went away, much to my relief.

Since that time, breastfeeding has been horrible.

I get these terrible shooting pains up my right breast after I nurse DS. They start at the nipple and go toward my back. Sometimes they last for hours.

I talked to my doctor, and she did a culture of my milk to rule out bacterial or yeast infection. Nothing came back to indicate either. But the pain has not stopped.

In addition to this, I don't know if I'm suddenly really sensitive or what, but DS's latch hurts like the dickens again. I see nothing wrong with the latch, but ouch. OUCH! Whenever he latches on it's just so painful.

He is 14 months old. I feel like I want to stop breastfeeding because of how painful it is. He only nurses in the morning and at night now. I don't pump anymore. But I feel horribly guilty for stopping. After I made it to a year of nursing, I wanted to make it another year- to 24 months. Is it selfish to stop? I just can barely take it anymore. I can't go to sleep at night because of the pain. My doctor is at a loss. Can anyone help me?

Your symptoms really sound a lot like mine when I had thrush. It might be worth having another culture done? I would also suggest seeing a lactation consultant. She might have other ideas for treatment/diagnoses. Is there anyone experienced in your area you could arrange a consult with?

Best of luck. I'm sorry you're dealing with such intense pain without much explanation. No fun. :(

The pain is getting worse and worse. Last night while DS nursed, I sat in the rocking chair biting on a towel to keep from crying out. My breasts hurt for hours afterward.

My doc has me on antibiotics, in case there is a bacterial infection (they're still testing my breastmilk for bacteria). Meanwhile, there seems to be no relief in sight. I'm seriously considering weaning because I cannot take this. Does anyone have any recommendations or ideas for me?

That sounds tough!! Is there any way you could see a certified lactation consultant? Seems like a case for a specialist!
