I'm new here and in desperate need of some guidance!
LO is 13 months, and we've had our share of nursing ups and downs, but NOTHING like this before. For the last week or so I've been having horrible pain when he latches on the left side (the glass-shards-coming-through kind of pain), followed by burning pain in the nipple and through the breast in between feedings. The bottom part of the left areola also seems a bit swollen, but other than that I haven't noticed any obvious visible differences between the left and right sides. I also haven't seen any white patches in LO's mouth or anything. Could it be thrush? A bacterial infection? I'm at the end of my rope with the pain! Any suggestions for getting through the weekend until I can make an appointment Monday morning?
I had thrush when my DS was an infant. Glass shards on my nipples and an achy sore breast were the only symptoms I had. DS had a few tiny white patches but my pain continued even after the patches went away. Be sure to wash all of your bras in HOT water and keep your nipples clean and dry between feedings. I found swabbing with grapefruit seed extract before and after feedings helped as well as a sugar/yeast - free diet.
Thrush is the pits. I hope you don't have it and if you do I hope it clears up quickly.
Dr did say it sounded like yeast. However, I am now on my 3rd week of Diflucan and I'm still having symptoms :( It's so frustrating! Yesterday I had almost no pain all day, but then this morning I'm back with pretty bad pain. I've been rinsing myself with a vinegar solution after every feeding, washing all laundry in hot water and vinegar, taking extra probiotics, I've tried gentian violet... I haven't been super careful about my diet but I guess I'm just going to have to get really strict with that.
How do you stay full while nursing on a low carb diet? Anyone else have experience with this?
Hi there! I just stumbled on your post! I hope that it's cleared up by now but wanted to let you know what worked for us when my baby and I had yeast/thrush issues. I used Grapefruit Seed Extract and followed Dr Jay Gordon's protocol. It worked very well. http://drjaygordon.com/breastfeeding/thrush.html. After the first day I had a HUGE reduction in discomfort. I almost felt like I didn't need to keep doing it, but you have to follow through to make sure it doesn't reappear.
Sometimes you and the baby have thrush without the white mouth thing going on. That's how it was for us. She had a yeast diaper rash and I my breasts hurt like crazy and were red. I also put a few drops of Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) in a spray bottle with water and used that as a diaper spray for my daughter. I think that the GSE can be more effective than vinegar.
I hope that you are feeling better!
Here's the Dr. Sears suggestion about how to get rid of yeast. http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/parenting/childhood-illnesses/thrush It might just be sticking around. It took me a while to get rid of it when my daughter and I had it. You just have to be really careful and not stop thoroughly cleaning anything that touches either of your mouths or butts or your breasts. I'm afraid I had to use the Nysatin (sp?) anti-fungal cream on my nipples before it went away.
Good luck and keep us posted!
Visually, I had no symptoms. It did feel like needles or shards of glass, as you said. Nursing is not always comfortable, but it should not be excruciating!
I got tired of my signature, but I still love my children and husband and miss my little brother.
