For those who breastfeed past infancy, when did your period return? DD will by 17 months in a week. I'm not missing it, just wondering if this is normal. (My older DD self weaned at 10.5 mos and AF returned shortly thereafter)

Mine has always returned when the baby was 2-3 months old. However this time my body has gone weird so with all the bleeding I have had these last 18 weeks I have no clue if I have had my period yet or not.

Last time it took two years- but it was an obvious return to full fertility. On Alexander's second birthday, I had the most obvious EWCM I've ever seen, and AF showed up exactly two weeks later.

Don't despair! It's not a bad thing- in fact, there is some evidence that missing periods is what causes some of the health benefits to mom associated with BF.

Why don't any of "the Mommy books" give us any info about this? With DS still nursing at 11 months, I got what I thought was a period, but it lasted 1 and a half days and was not normal (not red, for example. I won't go into detail--TMI!) started to worry that maybe it wasn't a period, maybe something was wrong. This month, I got a period, but it lasted 4 days and was very very light. IS THIS NORMAL? Are post-partum periods like pre-baby periods? (Can't remember with DS #1, but I only BFed him a few months anyway.) Do they get longer and heavier month after month until you're back to "normal"? (In my case, a full 7 day week.) I really would like to know!

My son is 19.5 months and my period is still gone. I am so happy, I'm almost afraid to talk about it and jinx myself!!

I forget when it came back after my daughter was born . . . over a year, I know, but I'm not sure it was 18 months. I don't think it was.

God I love breastfeeding.

DS is 19 mo (almost 20 mo just a couple more days) and I got my first PP AF a few days ago. It is lighter than before.

He still nurses quite a bit.

12.5 months. As in, today.

But, that's OK, we're starting to talk about TTC #2, so AF had to show sometime, right? Want me to send her your way?

No no. THat's OK. Really.

Ok next question. When it returned, was your PMS the same? I have felt the old familiar PM symptoms and no onset.

Now that I'm really thinking about it, I really am dreading its return.

Aunt Flo hasn't visited me since February of 2003! I got PG with DS, he was born late in November, I got PG with DD about 18 months later (Flo never showed up once!!), DD was born beginning of June 2006, and she's almost 16 months now and still no Flo!

I'd say be happy that she hasn't come for a visit yet!

So far, it hasn';t been bad. I keep expecting it to get a lot heavier, because it *feels* like it's going to. But so far, not a heavy flow, just an average person's average period, which is saying a lot since mine were so heavy and whacky before I went on the pill a million years ago.

I've seen this addressed in various parenting books.

There's a bunch of factors at work. First, pregnancy can change your body and the way that it functions. Some women with endo problems see improvement pp, others don't or see it worsen. And women without endo or other problems may or may not see a change.

Second, if it returns and you're still breastfeeding, month-to-month changes (or skips) are not unusual. There are competing hormones going on--the lactation hormones versus the fertility hormones. If your babe gets sick and spends 48 hours nursing like a newborn, that will affect your hormones for the month.

Third, if you are using the mini-pill due to breastfeeding or have had the Mirena IUD inserted, both of those can greatly impact your period's return. As my OB said to me: she'd lay equal odds on the mini-pill or breastfeeding my toddler currently being the cause of the "missing" period. (She doesn't care, thinks it's wonderful and not at all unusual.)

Mine returned a 12 month and a few days which is the longest of all four times despite them all being booby addicts night and day. Maybe my fertility is waning at the grand age of 34?

The PMS was horrible this time. I spent a month or so feeling crampy, getting spotty skin and feeling generally ill at ease before anything actually happened and when it did I was surprised at how heavy my bleeding was: my mooncup runneth over which was not good.
