Exclusive Q&A with 3 Green Moms
Q: Tell us your story? How did you come up with the idea for LunchSkins?
A: As moms, we noticed that there were a lot of messages about being green, but few that kids could grasp and turn into practice. When we were sitting around the kitchen table in 2008, we heard a staggering statistic: more than 20 million sandwich bags from school lunches go into U.S. landfills every day. We knew that kids and families were looking for easy, convenient and
simple ways to be green and avoid this kind of needless waste. So, LunchSkins were born with the help of our friend and now Creative Director, Jennie Stoller. Our mission - to reduce plastic by designing a colorful, fresh alternative to the 40-year old plastic sandwich baggie.
Q: You took an idea that started with a Green Lunch Basket for a school fundraiser, and turned it into a successful company. What advice do you have for other moms who have an idea for a green product or green business?
A: You have to have a passion for your product if it’s a product-based business. You have to have the faith that it might not take off right away. It goes back to being committed to our mission. We can’t do everything for everyone. You just have to remain committed to your ideal and your mission.
Q: Did being moms inspire you to start your business?
A: Moms are natural multi-taskers and innovators and are very aware of patterns of consumption and possible ways to reduce our carbon footprint. As a group, we are constantly improving things to suit our needs (or our kids' needs :)) or streamlining products and processes to save money and time and maximize our benefit. Moms are great at networking with neighbors, friends and co-workers about our clever ideas and ways to repurpose things or conserve resources. Being a Mom taps into our emotional side, too, when it comes to caring for our planet. We have a vested interest in protecting our streams, forests, oceans, mountains and vast landscapes for our children to see and enjoy in the same way we did as kids. Who doesn't love digging in the dirt, watching a colorful sunset or feeling small in front of an awesome mountain range or ocean?
MDC: Thank you for your time.
