As promised in my other thread I'm passing along information I found in my search for a mattress and foundation. I just got off the phone with IKEA and was told that their mattresses and boxspring/foundations contain PBDE. I questioned the representative twice about it (to be sure she meant that they do and not that they do not). Isn't this the fire retardant that was banned???? She repeated that it is treated with this chemical.
From what I read during my research it seems that the furniture made in Canada is different than in the U.S. with regard to fire retardants. Very disappointed, was close to picking up a foundation and was hoping they at least used a safer alternative on their foundations (if there is any that is!).
Crossing IKEA off the list!
(just wanted to clarify, I called to ask about a specific foundation and this is what I was told. Not sure about their latex mattresses/foundations but she told me that they all contain PBDE)
What's PBDE? We were getting ready to head over to IKEA in a few weeks to get my son a bed, mattress, etc from there. We are in the US. Thanks!
Its a fire retardant they spray foam with so its meets the flammability standards in the US. Its in most household upholstered furniture mostly to meet California code (companies don't want to make separate products so it all gets doused.)
