Natural remedy for gnats? - Mothering Forums

Hi ladies,

 

For the last year we have had what seems like a seasonal gnat problem.  During the winter, there are no problems.  But as soon as it starts to warm up in the spring, I have them all over my kitchen, mostly in and around my kitchen sink.  We thought that they were somehow coming up through the drain in the sink.  OMG, I have put so much crap down that sink to kill them off it's ridiculous.  I've poured bleach down it & plugged it up at night, everything I can think of.  I make sure there aren't any dirty dishes in the sink, no overripe fruit, etc. on the counters.  My kitchen is clean!  But I can't seem to get rid of them.   Any ideas?  Thank you in advance!

It sounds like fruit flies rather than gnats to me.

First, you have to find out where they are hanging out. It could be the drain or garbage disposal, but there could be more than one spot. They love vinegar, fruit juice, that kind of thing, so see if anything has dripped in your pantry or under your fridge or something. Also, old potatoes or onions are a favorite place for them. Go through your kitchen really carefully and get rid of anything old and make sure there aren't any drips. Then clean your garbage disposal out with a bunch of baking soda and detergent or something. Not vinegar because they love vinegar.

Then, to catch them, put out a dish with some apple cider vinegar mixed with a little dish soap. They'll be attracted to it - very attracted - and will die in there. But you really have to figure out where they're living and take care of that as well.

I don't have a garbage disposal, but I suppose I can clean down the drain the same way?  And thanks for the tip IRT the vinegar, I had no idea they actually liked it.
