I'd like to get an organic crib mattress, but I'm wondering if it'll be harder to keep clean than a conventional (but full 'o' toxins) mattress. I notice that many come with a "wool puddle pad" that can be washed occasionally. If you've used a latex or wool mattress please let me know how easy / difficult it is to clean up after "diaper explosions" and such. Or are there other non-toxic crib mattress options of which I may not be aware?
This is my first baby and I don't want any more work than will already be necessary!
I got a wool puddle pad for our daughter's crib futon. The wool didn't let anything through to the mattress, but it took AGES to dry when I washed it. While waiting for that to dry, I ended up using some standard crib mattress covers that I'd been given. I eventually stopped using the wool cover in favor of the others.
