We have the original 1939 hard wood floors in this house. They are very dull and in need of a serious refinishing but we can't afford it right now.

How can I spiff them up and make them look nice and at least have some shine to them?

Ours are dull, too. Laid in 1937. I don't know how to make them shine, unless it's very temporary. Int hat case, I spray a bit of Citrus Shine on a rag and rub it on. Looks beautiful for about 1/2 hour...

use lemon oil. it takes a bit of elbow grease, cuz you have to rub it into the wood with a rag, but it's worth it.

When we were selling our last house, we were in the same boat with the old floors needing refinishing. I rubbed them by hand with a beeswax-based product from the hardware store to shine them right up. It gave them a rich color and some luster, and it was totally worth the work.
