His biggest weakness seems to be (and here is the real reason I was so bummed out the other day when i wrote that whole spill) that whenever we buy something we NEED, or something for someone ELSE like me or the kids (even if it is something we have needed and waited for for a long time), if there is any money left he will go out and make a really big unnecessary purchase as if he is trying to offset being too responsible or something.

I know exactly how you feel! my DH did the same thing right down to the spending on after you spend thing.

You really cant talk to him , you have to somehow either take him to a counselor or take him to a class and have someone else say it. it sucks and its frustrating and its 8+ years of telling them the same thing but unless he changes then you have to find a way to either be happy with the way things are or move on
