So, correct me if I'm wrong-- once someone "claims" a freecycle group in a given area, there's no way to start a second group (you know, one that actually follows the rules
) or anything?
Our owner is basically holding our group hostage unless someone gifts her a laptop with wireless. This doesn't seem right.
There are at least 3 freecycle groups in my area. Maybe you can start a Northern X County Freecycle instead of Your Town Freecycle, or something like that.

I agree. My immediate area has three groups that almost completely overlap.

We have 3-4 Freecycle-like groups here in Bellingham. One is Craigslist, and the others are Yahoo groups that someone started up. One is called BellinghamPotlatch, and its more active than BellinghamFreecycle, and I forget the last one.
Thanks! I did find that address on their site and send them the info. I'm feeling guilty now, though. Like maybe she didn't know how it sounded. Maybe I should have assumed the best and emailed her and said something like "Hey, I'm not sure if this what your intention, but it sort of sounds like you're saying unless someone gives you a wireless laptop, you won't approve messages." I tend to fly off the hand in haste and repent in leisure. It's something I am working on.
We have overlapping groups. I live in Pittsburgh, and we have a Pittsburhg group, an Allegheny county group (PGH is in Allegheny) and an East End group (east end of pittsburgh).
Don't know if that helps, but, I'm not sure they're exclusive.
I didn't know you were in Pittsburgh! My oldest was there spending the night at the Carnegie Science Museum this weekend. I went to school an hour or say away (Grove City College) and we used to go to Pittsburgh all the time for concerts and musicals.

Totally OT, I know.
One of my best friends went to Grove City College! I think her husband did, too!
Yeah, like instead of (just using my area) "St. Louis Area Freecycle" you could start "Greater St. Louis Freecycle" or "Metro St. Louis Freecycle." Or even "X County Freecycle."
There are also other groups *like* freecycle that *aren't* freecycle -- I used to be in one called ReUseItStLouis.
She can't hold the group hostage! In fact, she is supposed to have a co-owner in case something like a missing computer ever happens. If she can't handle the duties of being owner/mod she needs to pass it on. Even if that means going to the library in order to change ownership of the group. I would contact Freecycle directly and tell them what is going on. info@freecycle.org
If that doesn't work or you don't get a response, let me know. I'm on the Freecycle ModSquad group. =)
Best of luck!

Oh good! I did send both copies of the email to that address.
I also applied for a county group. Maybe you could put in a good word for me, LOL!
Our local Freecycle had drama, so a group split off from xxxxFreecycle and created yyyyRegionRecyclers.
Then the Freecycle group apparently had drama with the national Freecycle organization and thus de-affiliated and became xxxxFreeExchange.
Whatever!
