Hello All. I am new to this thread. DP and I have taken the plunge to trying to cut our costs. We live a pretty "lean" life as it is. The major part of our spending is on Rent and Electricity.

In the short term we'ev got to save enough money for me to finish school and pay for child care while I am doing an internship. Next we'ev got to cover the cost of school supplies this August.

So Today!
$4.50 on Lunch (didn't pack one before we left)
$1.50 on Packaged Mac n Cheese for Dinner

A quick question, how do you guys deal with gas. Is it an expense per trip/day. Or is it somthing that's considered an expense when you fill your gas tank.

Deal with it however it'll help you the most. I figure gas is a necessity. I need it to get to work and to buy food for our family. The few side trips I take, if you really got into it, would cost $1, maybe $2 round trip (and I'm usually buying something necessary when I'm out). I don't count it on here at all. If I buy only gas that day it counts as a "no unnecessary spend" which is really my personal goal.

I *just* realized that as I'm c&ping from my word document, I haven't been changing the dates from last month. OOPS!!

: - groceries
- bills (electricity, gas, water & cable) & other necessities
- no spend!
- unnecessary spending

March 1st - : ($71), ($7.30 for new mop bucket, leftover containers, Cream of Mushroom soup from Dollar Tree)
March 2nd -
March 3rd -
March 4th -
March 5th - : ($3.61 for milk, I was out), ($4.33 for meds)
March 6th - We ended up having to run to the doc, C was running a fever of 103! $15 copay
March 7th -
March 8th - ($6.30 at Dollar Tree for microfiber towels & 2 HPTs!), ($18.31 at Wal-Mart for a pack of sposies [I need to work on my stash!], some razors for DH, and a few other things, I have them written down)
March 9th -
March 10th - $30 to reimburse my Dad for bailing my dog out of Doggie Jail.

Necessary Spending Total: $101.24
Wasted: $18.31
Total thus far: $119.55

I know that tomorrow I'll be spending $35 on bailing my dog out of doggie jail. He managed to escape our backyard (fenced in, we've walked it 50 times and can't find where he's getting out) and maneuver his way out of his cable (he's on a long cable line BECAUSE he's a Houdini). He was picked up yesterday while I was out of the house for, no kidding, ten minutes. I had left him & other dog in the backyard, as I sometimes do, to run over to MIL's. When I got back, he was gone. AC told me that I could spring him from the joint today, but I don't have a car to get there, so I'll have to go tomorrow. At least he's safe. ** ETA - My Dad bailed him out for me, he's home and rolling around on the carpet now!

K: Wife to C, Momma to C (2/20/08) & A (11/7/09)!

I've done that too. When I was embarrassed because I spent money after I swore up and down that I wasn't going to. Then I realized what was the point...the only way this thread works is if you are honest with yourself. Sometimes it hurts though.

Welcome! We're glad to have you! I think...just based on your first entry...that you are going to discover that, while the major part of your spending is on rent and electricity, that you spend a lot more than you think in other areas. Those lunches out really add up. This thread will help you with that.

re: gas. I record it when I fill my gas tank, but you do whatever will help you spend the least.

I ate lunch out today, so it goes on my tally, but I didn't pay! I did have to go to the Dr. this AM and he gave me a prescription, so those will both add up, but seriously, they were necessary expenditures. I've been sick for like two weeks now and we're traveling next week, so I cannot be sick.

Will update totals after I know the Rx cost and the trip to the grocery.

Fast-food badness the past couple of days.

----------
3/1: $500 cash taken our for all food expenses this month ($20 of that fed the drawer), amount in checking account that's above our minimum comfort level "swept" into savings
3/2: $29.06 groceries, $6.87 household goods
3/3: $39 case of pull-ups arrived from Amazon
3/4: $11.46 localharvest order, $25.52 groceries (isn't it clever how they have the localharvest pickup at Whole Foods?),$20 eyebrow/lip wax, $14.92 household misc. at Wally-world
3/5: went on a day trip - $15.82 gas, $4 fast food that is coming out of the food budget because I left my bag of change in the car. Then $15 for my dinner at Mom's Night Out.
3/6: $11 food, 72.25 household at Costco. I'm so glad dh finally let me buy him some pants that fit!
3/7:
3/8: $40 Hooked on Phonics Kindergarten set (a big discount!), $4 food at Purim festival.
3/9: Exercised! Shifted $80 from grocery envelope to drawer. Milk and eggs at farm $5, $24.97 groceries, $12.30 Mickey-Ds, $11 haircut.
3/10: $14.30 gas, $5 at Subway, $81 dollar traffic ticket that I actually counted the day it was issued in February, but I am just going to count AGAIN to punish myself some more. Plus, I paid it out of my grocery envelope. $174 on food for the rest of the month - THAT should put a crimp in my drive-thru habit! Good thing dh is going out of town on business for two weeks - his organic fruit consumption factors hugely into our food costs.

Goals

1/1 Sweep into savings
149/400 on food (500 initial amt - 149 food- 100 drawer feeding - 81 traffic ticket = 170. I actually have 174 because of times that my change stash or random cash in my wallet "helped out" the envelope)
100/300 fed to the drawer
0/30 on finishing up kids' summer wardrobes
7/20 days doing homeschool lessons
1/12 days exercising

475/1200 total non-fixed-cost spending

OK, is it me, or does carrying around an envelope of cash lead to constant temptations to repurpose the cash? If so, is it good (leading to even more frugality late in the month so the envelope won't run out) or bad (leading to total confusion about what you actually spent on the envelope item, and constant redefinition of you spending goal fro that item?)

Wow, I spend $450 on groceries (and ate out twice) since the beginning of the month and I am really going to have to shop within the next few days!

I have no bananas and very little fruit. I really don't have any food. I am trying to plan to make it through a few more days!

Tomorrow:
Breakfast: muesli
Lunch: gnocchi for kids and green smoothies for all
Dinner: freezer soup for us, rice for kiddos
snacks: fruit and oatmeal cookies (to be made) or granola (to be made)

Thursday:
Breakfast: waffles for kiddos and green smoothies
Lunch: pbj for kiddos, salad wrap for me, egg salad for dh
Dinner: Freezer soup and ravioli for kiddos

Friday:
Breakfast: muesli
Lunch: wheat berry salad with beans and veggies
Dinner: veggie burgers and frozen veggie stir fry with rice

OK... but I will HAVE to shop Friday... making $450 only get me through two weeks!!!!
