We are in a town with mostly low-income people, but oddly enough, the rent here is sky-high. Most people rent and the town is set up with rental duplexes. For ours, it's TINY, not sure the sq ft, but I've seen yards bigger than our 2 bedroom apt. It was $870 when we moved in 2 years ago and now she's raising it to $990. This includes heat/water, but even so, considering we make $10/hr and I only work part time, we can't really afford it. Our upstairs neighbors (the landlord's son and his family) have 2 kids who sound like they are throwing bowling balls on the floor at all hours of the day and then stomping around like elephants. Our dishes rattle in the cupboards
Problem is, with the recession, it seems that no one is moving, so there aren't many options.
Our landlord lives out of state and she only knows what's going on through her son who lives upstairs. Our shared dryer in the basement has been broken for over a year and the landlord refuses to fix it b/c according to her, her son says it works just fine. Well, they have the key so they can pay to run it 3 cycles to dry each load (and they do, b/c his wife complains about how long it takes), but that would cost us a bundle in quarters! He often misleads the landlord b/c he doesn't want her to be upset about anything. The neighbors also have filled up the yard with junk and the porch is all their stuff too, although it should be a shared porch. We're not really sure how to address, b/c the landlord is so closed about helping us out.
Any suggestions...obviously moving out would be the best. Anyone else have really unaffordable rent, and any suggestions?
