I need to tighten up the grocery spending and figure out how to stretch my food dollars. We have a full pantry
Me too, Ruthie. I just put a list up on the fridge of everything we have in the pantry (a la "Cindy's Front Porch") and my goal this month is to clean that list out. I try to empty our pantry every six months so that I know the stuff that is in there is fresh.

Alison -- Where's that budget?

Food has TOTALLY gotten away from us this month. We aren't having a quality eating experience, AND we're over-budget! My budget was obviously unreasonable. Oh well, next month is another chance to do better...

OTOH, despite some ridiculous costs that a sane person would amortize over the year (mural in kids' bedroom plus cost of new beds, vet, etc.) our household budget should run only a couple of hundred over. Yay. :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

April 1st: Dunkin Donuts, $10. Groceries, $22.49. Vet, $268.50 and my dignity.
April 2nd:
April 3rd: $100 to mikveh lady, $45.72 lunch and groceries at kosher deli, $19 gas and snacks on trip home

April 12th: $32.13 groceries at Wal-Mart

Dishwasher broke today!

After a solid hour of hand-washing dishes this morning (there are five of us and we usually ran that dishwasher every other day, so two days of dishes), I felt like a pioneer woman and vowed to get a new one this week.

Dipping into the emergency fund for this one.

Oh and I had to buy a baby doll today because my baby SHOPLIFTED the doll when we were at a toy store! Can you believe that?? She was riding around on my back and her hands were a'grabbin things I didn't even realize.

A few stores later my older daughter pointed out that the baby was chewing on a toy from the toy store we had left an hour ago. I would have been angry, but it just made me laugh.

The doll was unreturnable (my baby has some serious teeth) or I probably would have just asked the toy store owner if we could give it back...well, lesson learned.

What to do? I have an invite from a couple of really good friends to go out for a drink and appetizers tonight. I reeeeeeeeeally want to go. It has been a hard few weeks, dh is working a lot, my mom is moving in with us, I have been doing double duty, triple duty, quadruple duty as wife, mom, cook (multiple food allergies), gardener, homeschooler....anyway I could really use a night out with my tribe.

I think I just talked myself into it. Drinks are $2 and appetizer are half price. I think I could have a great time for $15-20. Yah, my sanity is worth it.

Not to mention the rum or whatever that lives in the freezer for the days that my children really drive me nuts. But I'm pretty sure I stay well under $50 most months...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks- usually I only spend 25 dollars per month on alcohol for myself, which is two bottles of the wine I like which is 12 per bottle. I could probably switch to something cheaper, but I don't drink that much as is (I have only had one GLASS of wine so far this month, dp drank the rest of the bottle because I didn't feel like drinking and I still have my second bottle unopened) and this is the only wine that I've had that is reasonably priced and that I enjoy. So to me, it's good value. I'd be open to something cheaper if I liked it but I haven't come across it yet, and if I did drink more than yes I'd want to hunt around for it... but for now I'd rather drink less of a nicer wine than more of a cheap one.

I'm trying to get dp to stick to a budget as well, and only buy one 24 pack of beer monthly (he's terrible at rationing food, I have to hide things or they are gone asap! this month I got the 24 10 days into the month and it's gone as of yesterday) Anyway, if you haven't noticed I changed my alcohol total from 56 back down to 22... that's because I don't usually pay for dp's beer, it's not in MY budget, he pays for it out of his own spending money. But I owed him some cash this month, so I bought his beer with my own money. Later I realized I shouldn't count this toward my own alcohol budget because I really did stick within my budget, kwim?

Thanks for the tip, though!

My dh doesn't drink much, but yes, with everything he regards as a "treat" there is no. capability. to. ration. I have no solution for that one, sorry

Two $12 bottles of wine per month seems totally reasonable to me. I'd say stock up when it goes on sale for $9.99, but we both know what would happen to it when your dp was out of beer and found it on the back on the pantry shelf...
