Hi,

I am Toni, mother to a 2.5 yr old and 8 mo old. I work almost none now, because things have been very slow at work. I used to work one day a week. I dont want to work outside the home at all. I love raising my girls.

I have been extremely blessed with living in nice homes, making good money. Always being blessed with enough. I dont want to take and take anymore. I want to appreciate what we have by using less and being smart about it. I have wasted so much time.

I want to organize my family and plan and save. Save for a new home, save for a family vacation, save to have security. I also want this to instill discipline into myself and my family.

I guess I just dont know how to get started. . .

Budget? I dont know how to do one.
Cash envelopes? Is that just paying cash for everything?

Any help would be appreciated.

I guess I will just start by saving ALL my reciepts.::

Mymary - Welcome. I am also very new at budgeting and just made a simple one on my computer and it of course is adjusted often until i figure all my finances out... But so far soo good. I am doing envelopes and find it a blessing. You really watch what you spend because you only have a certain amount. I keep my debit card out of my wallet so there is no backup source of cash. Everything I have left over after a paycheck is put against my debt. I have saved a $1000 Emergency Fund for those emergencies so I am not worried about not having money in my bank account.

Good luck.. this thread is wonderful. I am a single mama so I have no one to be accountable to and this thread gives me someone and when i have overspent i know i have to come here and admit it.

Stephanie, I am so sorry about your camera! That really stinks!

Welcome mymary! I can really relate to this:

"I have been extremely blessed with living in nice homes, making good money. Always being blessed with enough. I don't want to take and take anymore. I want to appreciate what we have by using less and being smart about it. I have wasted so much time.

I want to organize my family and plan and save. Save for a new home, save for a family vacation, save to have security. I also want this to instill discipline into myself and my family."

For me, the best place to start was simply to commit to tracking and categorizing my spending as a permanent lifestyle choice. I track both here and in Quicken. Quicken tells me in its little budgeting screen how much I've spent in the various budget categories for the past YEAR, which is enormously helpful in planning. It's definitely worth the time and money, IMHO, to get one of those financial programs and start using it. The longer you keep up with it, the more valuable the information becomes. Things that used to surprise the heck out of me every year, like personal property taxes due on my car, are now anticipated. It really helps.

And posting here adds that all-important human touch. My dh does not want to hear about the microeconomic activity of our household every.single.day., but these ladies do!

5/20: no spend
5/21: no spend;oops bought a book. $5.03
5/22: $9.20 (lunch out) $19.99(BD gift for neighbor girl)$45.66(food,paper towels, shampoo) $43.95(gas on my car) $47.85(husband at hardaware store getting sprinkler repair items-some of this was not needed and can be returned now) whew! here we go. . .
5/23: $5.03(omelet at work)
5/24: $18.27(food, most for memorial day bbq appetizer) $61.80(a little out of control. went to a expensive market, baby food, supplements, some drinks for mem day). $11.36 (Lunch on the road, fam) $5.21(20lb bag of ice for mem day).
5/25:
5/26:
5/27:
5/28:
5/29:
5/30:
5/31:

Totals?:

Unneccessary: $50.61

(what a fine line?!)

food: $130.94

I definately know now that when my husband is home, we FEED off of each other and the spending goes way up! We just want to have a good time and we spend.

Super mom to a 5 1/2 year old girl, almost 4 yr old girl, and 2 year old boy.
