I guess spending $200 over on groceries/household is okay? I mean we didn't eat out $200. But some of the money is eating out. One of these months it should be cheaper. I'm going to empty out the "pantry" (which is essentially a cupboard) and not buy much of those things.

$138.20

: $557

Savings $519/$500

S-d D which made them three. M grew lonely, and now there's baby D.

Ugh, this is turning out to be such a bad month!! I think I just made my budget too restrictive. At least the areas I went over budget on weren't majorly frivolous (Except the garden stuff). I've never gotten my grocery bill below 600 so I wasnt even sure I could get near 500 but i figured id try... now seeing all this red is making me feel bad though! and there's been so much illness this month, maybe i should make a sink fund for that. I went over budget in my spend category because I had to get special floss for dd as well as some pain killers for after her dental surgery next week.

$7 coffee & cookie $8 sandwiches for lunch. Going out tonight, won't be good, but it will be fun.

I have to say though, since I've been doing this I've always ended up with at least $350 in stupid spending. And hardly anything being saved. MUCH MUCH better this month! I can't focus on no spend days. That just makes me go it! and spend more $$ on days I slip up and spend $1 for a soda.

$153.20

: $557

Savings $660/$500 That's like $25% of my income! WAHOO!

Wow, Tricia, you had a great month! Do you think I'd spend less if I put on a cape dress?

Soooo, my month was not great, but what with having a baby and all things could have been much worse. If I rebound with an awesome June (which should happen, since I'm going out of town to visit my folks and dh spends almost literally no money on his own) I will feel OK about it. The major failure was not setting aside $$ for the property tax bill and interest-only mortgage bill that both hit us like a ton on bricks each December (honestly, what kind of emotional sadist decided that property tax bills should coincide with Hanukkah and Christmas?).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

May 1: $2 pizza day at preschool, $295 preschool tuition, $300 mural in kids' bedroom
May 2: Mortgage paid.$4.56 overpriced yummy sugary coffee drink, $3 brownie breakfast for kids, $7 heirloom veggies seedlings, $10 gallon of local strawberries, $6.77 bananas and raw milk.
May 3: $26.37 book, $31.57 bulk order of Dreamfields pasta
May 4: $16.50 insurance autodraft, $35.99 sheets and socks for older kids at BRU, $33.86 baby supplies at Baby Depot, $44.45 at Michael's, and... $13.23 unhealthy lunch at the Barnes and Noble cafe for ds and me
May 5: $12.30 Mickey-Ds, $38.13 household 40.75 groceries $9.42 gas at Costco
May 6:
May 7: about $29 fast food It was a loooong drive to the pediatric urologist, but I should've had lunch at home.
May 8: $74.05 household at CVS, $18.34 groceries, $35.59 Asian takeout. Aaaargh!
May 9: $71.71 gas bill autodraft
May 10:
May 11: $50.56 groceries $9.39 Ziploc bags at Costco, $21.21 books $9.84 unhealthy breakfast at Barnes & Noble, $27.28 garden $25.12 groceries $40.96 household at Walmart, $12.30 Mickey-Ds
May 12: $661.21 autodebited car payment, $35 Staxx Omega, $22.22 gas, $92.58 books on Amazon (crazy! I have gone totally crazy!), $19.99 bday gift for the kids
May 13: $300 taken out for cleaner, $89.41 at BRU, $9.60 Mickey-Ds.
May 14: $23.07 Story of the World (bc of course I need to make 1st grade lesson plans RIGHT NOW), $11 dinner out with the ladies from preschool, $70 landscaper
May 15: Payday! $19.23 groceries, $32 Chinese takeout, $2 pizza day at school
May 16: $4 juice boxes for kids' party, $24 camcorder tapes for the birth and to send to my brother in Iraq, $2 groceries at Wal Mart. At the Dollar Store: $5 kid gifts for extended-family BBQ, $2 number candles for cake, $4 toiletries, $25 ingredients for guest bags at birthday party.
May 17: $22 books for my preschool class to donate to the Temple library, $15 JudaiKeepsake for my new daughter!
May 18: A complicated financial day! returned baby item, -$6.09 and yay for thoughtful SIL who gave me her unused duplicate item knowing that I wanted one! -$60 cash my mother gave me to cover her share of the various purchases I made for both of us. $29 haircuts, $20.02 gasoline, $38.00 Cracker Barrel, $20.34 groceries, $14.93 mailing APO box to my brother in Iraq, $68.95 82nd birthday gift for Grandma!
May 19: Helen's birth day! $31.54 hospital food and takeout
May 20: While I was sitting around the hospital waiting for the 24-hour baby hold to run out, a nice lady charmed/conned me into spending $45 on a photo package of my funny-looking newborn
May 21: We're home!
May 22: Back in the spending saddle! $11.75 breakfast at Barnes and Noble, $49.79 bday presents for kids, $45.85 groceries, $23.85 household at Wal-Mart, $37.09 nice bottle of wine for MIL who has helped me out tremendously this past week (well, year) and just found out her beloved dog has cancer
May 23: $11 at neighbor's yard sale (a field trip for the kids that doesn't totally exhaust postpartum mommy! Totally worth it!), $102 balance owed for bday party venue plus tip to the nice lady who led the horse around and drove the hayride to the petting zoo. What a great day!
May 24: $117.89 groceries at Costco, $85.79 at Walgreens (about $40 reimbursable OTC meds if I will just be responsible and file the FSA paperwork

05/01 Budgeted day: $21.44 gas for car J; $66.52 dinner (it was our eight year anniversary of our first date, so we splurged, but we planned to splurge in advance and budgeted for it).
05/02 budgeted grocery/household spending: $149.47 I plan to seperate this out later in to household and grocery categories but I can't find the receipt right this second.
05/05 budgeted: $20.47 gas for car B; $5.32 at the post office sending a certified letter to the slumlord, however, I am not counting this against me as I plan to dock it from the rent anyhow ; $20 at the ATM taken out for gas for car J.
05/06 : $25.42 at Lowes for ceiling tiles that WILL be reimbursed by the landlord and $28.32 for Mother's Day cards and two small gifts plus gift wrap. This was a spend, I could have gotten this cheaper had I tried.
05/07 Budgted day: $22.74 for two bouquets of flowers for the Moms and $48.20 taking them both out to eat for Mother's Day- had to do it early because of travel/being out of town
05/08 $20 budgeted for my share of a Baby Shower present
05/09
05/10 Budgeted $16 for groceries
05/11
05/12
05/13

Medical bills paid this month:
$96.51 half of hospital bill
$114.35 half of surgeon's bill
$178.44 Dr. Bill
$114 other half of hospital bill
$96.50 other half of surgeon's bill
$22.58 Dr. bill
$69.87 Another hospital bill
$153.00 Dr. bill
Total: $845.25 ALL paid upfront with cash or check, with ZERO going on credit cards. That was huge for me.

Extra debt paid:
$145

Okay so I am considering this month to be a success. I paid for my entire surgery with cash. I added $145 extra to debt paydown. And I only had three spend days!!! OMG! : Mainly because I had no more money left after paying all of those medical bills But still, I will take it

I hope June is just as good for us!

Analysis: I think we did okay this month, considering the way a new baby complicates things! I am proud of myself for keeping the grocery spending so low. I am also very proud of DH for turning over a new leaf this month, by trying some generic brand foods- he found out that most of them taste the same as the more expensive stuff that he was insisting we buy up till now! We did go over in just about every category besides groceries though. I hope to spend less on gas for June, since I have fewer baby appointments in the city and will therefore be driving fewer miles.

I will continue tracking baby expenses separately from groceries, since the expense of disposables and wipes will motivate me to get on the ball about using cloth when at home.

4/30- $142 groceries, $21 gas
5/1- $35.80 nursing bra, returning other new bra for $22 refund
2-
3-
4th thru 9th- At home with new baby! $20 well baby visit copay
10- $23 baby sling ebay, Gas $20?
11-
12-
13- $17 groceries
14-
15 - : $0.80 library fine, $10 TP
16-
17-
18- $16 groceries/ household
19-
20-
21- $34 tomato plants and flowers
22- $44 gasoline, : $20.50 paperback swap
23-
24- $15 baby clothing (over budget) $138 groceries
25-
26-
27-
28-
29- Yard sales! $27.50 kid clothing : $4.50 self clothing, : $3 ripoff broken toy

5/30, 5/31- recorded as June spending

May key and goals:

Budgeted
Groceries /household $357 / $360
Gas $85 / $60
Homeschool $0 / $20
Kid clothing & items $30.50 / $20
New baby items- $73.80 / $40 for new baby expenses
: unbudgeted spending $40.80 / $20

No spend days 20 / 20 days :

I did so much better saving! Wahoo! Definetly need to set aside money before the paycheck is spent and refuse to take it out. House, House, House!

We did a lot better on eating out, although, still ridiculous. I think I might need to allow myself 500 a month on food/household/eating out and have that be that.

This cash thing is definitely helping. Right now, we're out of cash. Those, carnivals!

I do find myself really thinking "do i actually NEED this. how many pairs of shoes does DS REALLY NEED? Does DS NEED more t-shirts?" I'm trying to differentiate need from want. Doing better.

S-d D which made them three. M grew lonely, and now there's baby D.

Well i think my weeks are different from my actual budget weeks since it goes from fri to fri q2wks based on my pay... not by month... well my budget on paper is monthly... oh well... i am still new at this...

I borrowed from other categories to eat out this weekend... very naughty indeed.. oh well i can always roll up my pennies...

I need to plan better for night shifts...

05/31:

26/20 No spend days
$58/$100 Frivolous spending.
$685/$300 Paid on pellet stove. *PAID OFF!*

Monthly breakdown:
$33 on fast food. Not horrible considering.
$14 on fabric. I guess that's OK but I don't want it to be the beginning of the slippery slope that starts me buying waaaaay too much fabric again.
$4 on an ink pad. I really wanted to do DS' footprints as I missed out on my chance to do DD's.
$3 on a shirt for dd. Really silly. She has so much to wear already.
$4 on my favorite soap ever. It really does give me at least $4 of happiness.

I did manage what I figured nearly impossible. I paid off the remaining pellet stove balance in one month! Now to prepare for another tight month. We are going to have to spend a decent amount of $$$ on repairs to get our vehicle inspected. :

Oh...my...goodness...to say May got away from me a bit on the daily posting front would be a ginormous understatement. Did fairly well, all things considered (those "things" including half a dozen b-day parties, 1st communion, annual Memorial Day vacation, etc.). Just finished updating M/S Money, so have hard #'s for $'s; guessing as to other totals. No chance I will catch up on May activity; hope the month was a good one for all of you, and looking forward to seeing you much more frequently in June!

Kim

MAY GOALS:
* Move toward achieving work goals: Accepted a new PT position :
* Less than $25 in frivolous spending: month to date $20
* At least 24 days (no spend or spending w/in budget): 28/24
* NO library fines: month to date $0 / NO parking tickets: $0
* Stay within grocery/eating out budget: $854.82/$500
* ORGANIZE/declutter (lack of organization = spending): 24/24
* Exercise (feeling good = decreased emotional spending): 25/30
* Meal plan created: 2/4 weeks
* Break $250K in debt paid off since snowball began Feb. 2008: almost there...

Kim - - same here!

May got away from me.

If you ever notice that I am missing from this thread -- it is because I am out spending money.

You can count on that.

I don't like to come on here when I am spending money.

But FIDO, I'm moving on to June.

honestly? it feels just a little better to know this, i totally thought you were like to no-spend guru and i was all set to be embarrassed about how much i spend.
No-spend guru? Oh my goodness no.

Just the opposite.

I am a compulsive spender who spends money for emotional reasons -- I've gotten us into BIG financial trouble with this.

I do these threads because they help me work on this problem and help me recognize when I'm spending money compulsively.

You can rest assured that I am never judging anyone on this thread.
