I budget for the recurring bills and they get paid with checks. I then have cash on-hand for groceries and extras and that is what I track because it is what is variable and it is a lot easier for cash to slip through my fingers. A coffee here, take-out there, run to WFs for milk instead of the co-op and next thing I know I need more cash and it is only the 10th.

Pre-emptive no-spend today. Hopefully I won't have to come on here and edit. My Dad is coming for a visit and we'll be running around with him all day doing free things so I won't be on the internet.

But this month I want to stay on top of editing this. Whenever I let a couple of days slip by me, I usually am out spending money.

This thread really does keep me accountable.

So tempted to spend lately! I hate feeling this way. I am trying to put myself on a one week spending freeze. I need a good challenge right now.

UGH! I double paid my huge Visa bill. So, that overdrew my checking account. I guess "luckily" we have overdraft protection with our bank credit card, but that means a cash advance fee on top of it. I'm so mad at myself!

I guess on the positive side, there hasn't been a lot of spending on the credit card in the last week, aside from vet bills. The fridge is still stocked. And I guess this is my incentive to pass up the great sales this week. I'm going to look at the ads one more time, but I probably should let them pass.

1 -
2 - Me-No Spend, DH - grocery shopping for the trip
3 - Gas
4 - Fish food at the state park
5 - $21 Gas, cokes for our trip back. Pantry Challenge Dinner
6 - $110 for vet. Blood test for my sick cat.
7 - $12 Rx for antibiotics.
8 - $6 lunch with friend $12.50 necessary groceries, plus a $3 local, organic watermelon

Bridget. Momma to DD (4), expecting DS - 9/09, wife to SAHD. Gardener, coffee addict, urban dweller.

Yesterday I had to pick up a prescription and some cheese, both necessary expenses

My July goals:
1. Have at least 15 no spend days: 2/15
2. Go to Tim Horton's 4 times or less all month: 1/4
3. Go out to eat 4 times or less all month (we'll have lots of family in town this month so this one will be hard!): 1/4
4. Pay off at least two credit cards with a large sum of money we'll be receiving this month: 0/2

Key:
= No Spend
= Necessary budgeted spending
= Unplanned but necessary spending
= Unnecessary spending

July 1: Ordered pizza in. My Aunt died on Canada Day and none of us really felt like cooking.
July 2: Paid rent and other bills; Tim Hortons run
July 3: Bought supplies for printing postage for my business; Bought snacks on our way home from the visitation for my Aunt at the funeral home
July 4:
July 5:
July 6: Bread and cloth diaper
July 7:
July 8: Cheese; Prescription for the little one
July 9: Should be no spend with the exception of gift cards

Running Totals:
Necessary budgeted spending = $814.14
Unplanned but necessary spending = $57.37
Unnecessary spending = $61.45

Just reminding myself that I don't need anything but food, and little at that, at the store today. I want a house. We need a house. We don't need to buy anymore household things, until we have a house.

We don't need to eat out, that's the whole point in buying food. So let's not eat out today. We want a house.

Alright, let's hope that pep-talk worked.

Hi ladies - again posting a ton at once (I've been sick for this last week and am just now starting to feel better!)

GOOD NEWS! I am going to receive unemployment : This will help us pay off the majority of our debt by the end of the year!!!!! I am SO SO SO EXCITED!

(Obviously if we had no debt we'd be able to save this money but right now I am happy to be headed toward being debt free at a much faster pace than anticipated!)

Thanks to being sick I haven't even had the energy to go out and spend any money, so right now this month looks really good! Plus, since I am getting unemployment I will be listing when we pay off a loan or credit card more frequently!

*****
(I am recording all unbudgeted spending here and loan payoffs!)

July 1 - Went to the zoo (free), set up DH's commuter benefits ($100/month savings!)
July 2 - Just cleaned the house and getting ready for guests
July 3 - $30 Target - Stuff for the kids for the holiday, fun but not necessary
July 4 - Used budgeted entertainment monies and spent less than anticipated due to rain
July 5 - Went to the beach (free) took a cooler lunch & snacks (free)
July 6 - Sick...not going anywhere
July 7 - Still Sick
July 8 - Still Sick (at least it's good for not spending!)
July 9 - $15 at Target - DH made this run, I think he was getting sick of my being sick
July 10 - Paid off AFNI Student Loan : Saved $15 by balancing the checkbook (the bank double deducted a small check I had written!)

I'm falling in the "nobody's perfect" category right now. Not spending a ton on stupid stuff, but still spending.

DH is doing well with using up what is on hand! I am so proud. Yesterday we had french toast, with the rest of the white bread from when he was sick. And tonight we are having ribs from the freezer. Hopefully we can have a pep talk before he goes to the farmer's marketing, and he can check that in check. I'll also be going to our u-pick-it CSA - hoping for some good stuff there.

We're going to the zoo this weekend - free membership and I pack snacks, but we probably will spend some money on carousel rides.

1 -
2 - Me-No Spend, DH - grocery shopping for the trip
9 - $1 for candy bar $12 on gas
10 - $2 fast food $12 groceries

Bridget - You are doing a GREAT JOB! I know in your initial post you were a bit worried but looking at what you've done and your plan well done! (And have fun at the zoo - we recently did this and spent very little money!)

Yesterday was my birthday as well as my anniversary, so we ordered supper in for us and one of our close friends and her daughter who joined us to celebrate Tomorrow is DS2 baptism so today is a flurry of food prep and cleaning so we are spending money on supplies as the day goes on.

My July goals:
1. Have at least 15 no spend days: 3/15
2. Go to Tim Horton's 4 times or less all month: 1/4
3. Go out to eat 4 times or less all month (we'll have lots of family in town this month so this one will be hard!): 2/4

July 9: Smoothie while we were downtown
July 10: Grocery shopping; Probiotics for the kids, tshirts that I've been waiting for to go on sale, birthday supper
July 11: Eggs from a local farmer; Bus tickets

Running Totals:
Necessary budgeted spending = $864.56
Unplanned but necessary spending = $145.21
Unnecessary spending = $68.45

: BAD NEWS in our house. We had a clogged drain. And come to find out that we need anywhere from $1500-$6000 in sewer repairs. Well, I guess DH and I will really be on board with the extreme frugality. It would be really nice to have a year where we don't spend more than 10% of our gross income on a major home repair. Big Sigh.

But before that DD enjoyed a great morning with DH at the market and with me in the kiddie pool.

1 -
2 - Me-No Spend, DH - grocery shopping for the trip
3 - Gashttp://www.mothering.com/discussions/newreply.php?do=newreply&p=14064902#:
4 - Fish food at the state park
5 - $21 Gas, cokes for our trip back. Pantry Challenge Dinner
6 - $110 for vet. Blood test for my sick cat.
7 - $12 Rx for antibiotics.
8 - $6 lunch with friend $12.50 necessary groceries, plus a $3 local, organic watermelon
9 - $1 for candy bar $12 on gas
10 - $2 fast food $12 groceries
11 - Rx for cat $18, Farmer's Market $20, stop-gap plumbing repair $50

Thanks for the words of encouragement, CityChic.

Bridget -- : I hate when that happens. But at least you double paid on that credit card... I'm sorry to hear about the house repairs. But you are keeping great records and moving forward.

It worked for me! You are right. Thanks for posting this. I need to keep my eye on the big prize.
