: I bought a TON of groceries today...easily enough to last us through the end of the week and....

YAHOO!!!!! My grocery total (if I can keep away from the food stores until September 1st) for this month is $594!!!!

That is the cheapest it has been this entire year!!! I haven't broken $600 since 2009 started.

Oooooh...I'm very motivated not to buy anymore food until next month. I bought 20 lbs of chicken today, 6 lbs of pork loin, an entire family size package of ground beef, so many vegetables I can barely close our fridge...plus we have a farm share that is already paid for.

I think we can do this.

01.. $1 toy at yard sale
02..
03..
04.. $13 pizza
05..
06..
07..
08..
09.. $33 road race registration
10..
11..
12..
13..
14..
15.. $75 potting soil, plants, flower pots
16.. $25 state park camping fee
17.. $4.47 more potting soil
18.. $48 household stuff at Walmart
19.. $11.58 McDonald's
20.. $33 Dumb and Dumber haircut
21..
22.. $50 Yoga clothes, $6 drinks at health food store
23..
24..
25.. $100 Running shoes, $6 McDonalds
26.. $5 movie admission for my daughter
27..

Oh and Kim that envelope thing didn't work for me.

I blithely dipped into that grocery money envelope whenever it was time to buy anything.

I don't have any self-discipline when there is cash in front of me. So much easier to whip out that envelope than to use my debit card.

I need to find a different strategy.

Unfortunatley the rest of the month is going to be expensive, we have family in town, a daughter's birthday party and birthday, birthday dinner, and I changed a few things with our curriculum so I am anticpating an expensive end to August. However, I do plan on spending only on bare necessities, as hard as it will be, in September.

My key...
No Spend Day :
Necessities/Low Spend Day
Over budget- frivolous spending :

August 6th-

15th- No Spend Day (for me)- It was our Anniversary and we went out to dinner and the movies, but that was planned and budgeted for.
16th- $30 last of our curriculum, bought a new TV but that is covered by our insurance (house was hit by lightening) and we spent about $100 out of pocket
17th- $18 Back to School Breakfast @ Chick Fil A, $50 Walmart for grocery "staples", a few back to school treats
18th- : Back to "homeschool" Beach Bash FREE $3.00 at Sonic for Drinks

Legend:
Budgeted spend
: Unnecessary spend
No spend

August
1. : um, got off on the wrong foot, bought a starbucks frappacino. gas, grocery store (getting better at trying to eliminate frivolous spending here), petsmart (fish to replace some we lost).
2.
3.
4.
5.
6. took a day off work to go to water park with daughter and grandbabies but my power went out and i didn't want to leave kitty alone in the 100 degree heat! a/c came back on before it got too unbearable but timing wasn't right anymore so i just went to dd's house and visited with her there. didn't spend any money!
7.
8. necessary spends - grocery store, gas, walgreen's (bought some chocolate. isn't this a necessary spend, though? ) goodwill (crossword puzzles for dh i consider necessary cuz at least he'll do them while watching tv; also a couple of little juice glasses which are hard to find anymore), wine store (we buy the boxes which are cheaper), best buy (wireless printer for the laptop).
9.
10.
11. : i KNEW i shouldn't have gone out to lunch with my coworker. she went to bath & body works (i knew this before hand) and of course i HAD to buy something there. grrr. and then bought lunch at chickfila when i had brought a perfectly good lunch of leftovers.
12. :: okay, both necessary and unnecessary cuz i guess i could look at it both ways. tomorrow is a coworker's baby shower for her preemie who is still in the hospital. i gave $20 toward a gift for the baby and volunteered to bring the drinks for the shower which i spent about $8 on for two canisters of kroger brand powdered sweet tea.
13. had a great time at the baby shower today!!! momma was so happy and said preemie is doing well!! coming home soon!
14. our every other friday evening going out to eat date. also bought our weekly wine box and fish supplies.
15. gas, walgreen's, kroger - special double coupon day combined with all their specials and i saved almost $50 dollars! : this is the best i've done in months and months!! didn't even go to whole foods like i usually do. i love that store and it's only 10 minutes from me so it's a temptation!
16.
17.
18.
19.
20.
21.
22. proud of myself, did well on groceries this time but there's still room for improvement
23.
24.
25.
26.
27. : latte from mcd's. been doing good otherwise. oh well, i've done way better here than before i started this challenge!
28.

So close...alas, the siren calls of ice cream last night + an impromptu al fresco meal in our favorite city square this evening during a family bike ride resulted in overspending the (already upwardly adjusted) food budget. Blah! (But at least we had a blast on both counts - )

Squeaking a couple more meals out of the pantry today. The kids are getting restless and demanding more fruit and snacks. Poor monkeys are going to have to make due with nutritious soup and veggies for another day. I will spoil them with avacados and mangos after tomorrow's shopping.

Okay...now I'm on the right track. I was tempted to stop for breakfast at Waffle House this morning (because DP got paid last night, so our 'cheap week' is over), but then I started thinking about how that's our problem anyway....we're frugal when we have to be, but once we have extra cash we spend it! So, I guess that's the whole point of this challenge. Right?

I'm a little frustrated because DP has 3 potentially high-cost activities planned for this weekend and he has NO self-control. I'm going to talk with him when he gets home and "encourage" him to put a lid on it. I'm tempted to transfer some $$ into our savings account and let him think we have less money available. A couple unexpected bills DID come in....

BTW, I think I'm going to track my grocery spending next month too. I know we discussed the fact that food is necessary & I refuse to feel guilty about groceries, but I feel like I need a visual to make me aware of that spending. I bought shrimp 3 times (total- $17) before I actually made the dish I needed it for!

Eagerly awaiting a fresh start on the grocery/dining out budget in September. Think we could have stayed in budget if I had a meal plan + any desire whatsoever to spend the hot muggy August days in the kitchen. Must be realistic + admit w/ both DH + I working + sharing kiddo watching/homeschooling duty, + DH back in school FT, time will be really limited. Need to create a strategic plan for making good food fast. Also rethinking my decision to sell our huge upright freezer. It is a bit of an elephant in the kitchen (at our old house it lived in the basement, not an option in our 100+ yearl old new digs), but should probably get in the habit of feeding it regularly.

Kim :

Aug. 1: $79 at Goodwill (2 dresses, 2 shirts for DH, + about 15 exceptionally cool floor puzzles/wooden toys/board games/art stuff for kiddos)

Aug. 26: overbudget - ice cream sundae fixings
Aug. 27: overbudget - impromptu al fresco meal downtown
Aug. 28:
Aug. 29: overbudget - caved to inaccurate cries of "there's nothing to eat" (primarily from DH ) + hit the grocery store

: 25/27 (no spend/spending w/in budget)
Groceries/Dining Out: $769.18/$600

August 24- dh- $13- mothballs and gum?
August 25- $22.07- shipping for books for paperbackswap- for homeschool

August 27::
August 28::
August 29 31.95 groceries- goal was $32 so wooo hoo! made it- $10.23 eating out
August 30
August 31

I think our only other spending this month should be some bulk items I need to order- I am waiting on a friend though so we can split shipping- it shouldn't be anymore than $40 shipping and all though.

As it stands we should easily make our budget and have our checking acct back up w/ our short-term emergency fund up to full again. which is great considering at one time this month the checking acct got down to $11! Keeping everything on track makes me much more optimistic than we can make it these next few months which will need to be tight for savings.

Happily Married to my : 11 yrs- Mama to wild-eyed monkey boy 7-04, fiery little girl 4-07, and the happy smiley baby that sleeps 11-09!
