I KNOW.

This weekend I have to make a menu and a grocery list and get out there and get some stuff for us to eat.

We always make bad choices if I wait until the last minute.

We went to the carnival at DD's school today. We had a good time, although she brought home lots of plastic junk. As a plus, we won a raffle for dinner for two at a Mexican restaurant. SO EXCITED! I hear they have great fish tacos.

Tomorrow DD and I will probably go to a movie with free passes and free snacks. Although I may have to go buy more canning jars.

Who you are
I am a new momma to DD Madilyn (4wks) and wife to Chris. I am currently planning on being a SAHM now that Madilyn is here but our finances may dictate that I bring in some sort of income once our savings runs out.

Where you are going
My big goal is to be able to continue to be a SAHM and still be able to keep our household afloat on DH's paycheck as well as pay off our mound of debt while putting $ into our savings and retirement. No small feat when you look at our income and mortgage payment.

How you plan to get there
My goal for the month of August is to create a budget as well as a chart that shows our debts with our progress in paying those off.

My key:
No Spend Day =
Necessary Expense =
Non-Essential Expense =

08/08: $26 produce at farmer's market , $18 takeout (fussy baby foils dinner preparations, hunger ensues)

Grocery Store Day today.

I'm going to give myself a if I buy ONLY food and ONLY what is on my list today.

But going to the grocery store is a land mine for me...I have to be very conscious of what I am buying because other things miraculously appear in my cart.

Wish me luck!

This happens to me but I can forgive myself if it's something on sale that I would normally use. Grocery stores are usually a land mine for me also but I've been trying to curb that!

Good luck VTmom!

a. Who you are - Aileen, wife to hubby, part time stepmom to 11 year old girl and 16 year old boy.

b. Where you are going (your financial goals) - long term: be debt free by this time next year (medical bills, one cc and one car payment), continue building up savings/retirement cushion. short term: work on reducing grocery budget and unnecessary spends.

c. How you plan to get there - get an online budget tracker such as Quicken because what I'm doing now is NOT doing the trick.

Legend:
Necessary spend
: Unnecessary spend
No spend

August
1. : um, got off on the wrong foot, bought a starbucks frappacino. gas, grocery store (getting better at trying to eliminate frivolous spending here), petsmart (fish to replace some we lost).

6. took a day off work to go to water park with daughter and grandbabies but my power went out and i didn't want to leave kitty alone in the 100 degree heat! a/c came back on before it got too unbearable but timing wasn't right anymore so i just went to dd's house and visited with her there. didn't spend any money!
7.
8. necessary spends - grocery store, gas, walgreen's (bought some chocolate. isn't this a necessary spend, though? ) goodwill (crossword puzzles for dh i consider necessary cuz at least he'll do them while watching tv; also a couple of little juice glasses which are hard to find anymore), wine store (we buy the boxes which are cheaper), best buy (wireless printer for the laptop).

Hot here today. We took a late afternoon trip to the pool and it was heavenly. Money spent, but I was super frugal with our groceries this week and I was able to squeak another $100 to the cc. That cc is going down in 10 days when we get paid again.

Aug 4 --
Aug 5 -- 119.78 blueberries bushes for the garden

Normally I post now -- during naptime -- but I'm going to hold off until everyone goes to bed.

We still have to go to the grocery store and I want to hold a successful no-spend posting on here as my carrot to keep me from putting bad stuff in the cart.

See you at bedtime.

: Back on track!!! I spent the weekend making, ahem, "creative" meals. We also went to a party yesterday afternoon, so none of us were very hungry for dinner. I finally went grocery shopping today and stocked up on EVERYTHING. I grabbed a bunch on "Manger Specials" (things close to exp date or with damaged packaging) and have planned the weeks meals around that. I also found that going shopping early (right after dropping Amelia at school) gave me the BEST "Manger Special" selection! (I know this is obvious....I'm a late sleeper and have been living in denial)

My key:
No Spend Day =
Planned/Necessary Expense =
Unplanned/Non-Essential Expense =

08/08: $26 produce at farmer's market , $18 takeout (fussy baby foils dinner preparations, hunger ensues)
08/09: $33 bought lunch for in-laws (should have split bill) , $71 grocery shopping
08/10: $238 Costco & $83 TJ's, food staples usually do a bi-monthly at TJ's and every 6 weeks at Costco. $14 Walgreens

I've been terrible at updating, but just knowing this thread exists has been a great help for me!!!

Had a pretty good weekend. Usually we go out to eat a time or two (nothing expensive, but still wasteful spending) and blow some money at Target. Friday I went grocery shopping (and did really well!) and Saturday DH took DS fishing (free fun!) and I took DD out and about. We were going to go to Once Upon a Child to look for a new toy for her (she's 6 months old and needs something a little more interactive than what we have) but she fell asleep so I splurged on a huge Diet Coke at McDonalds and parked in the shade and talked to my mom on the phone. It was nice and under $2 so I felt like it was a great treat.

Saturday night we planned on going to the county fair- we knew DS had had fun playing the games at the county fair in our old state, but this one was the LAMEST fair I've ever seen! We bought a big iced tea from Sonic (cheaper) before we went in but told ourselves that we would splurge on a funnel cake. They had no food vendors or games, just 'big kid' rides! So, we didn't spend any money (but it was really disappointing for DS. lol) Then we splurged on some DQ for DH and some Starbucks for me. I've been making my own "fancy" coffee at home and really should have been more patient. Blah.

Sunday I cooked FIVE turkey breats. Like, over 35 lbs of meat. : I made enchiladas, chili, tortilla soup, turkey noodle soup, shredded BBQ "chicken" sandwiches, meat for fajitas, and turkey pot pie and still have two HUGE plates of turkey meat for DH's lunches. At only 88 cents a pound I had to do it. (Plus, I'm so excited I won't have to cook for two weeks! I think I'll do this every week from now on!!)

Then my sister bought DS some window paint for his bday. We put a towel down next to the sliding glass door but he squeezed the tube and the top popped off and it went ALL over the carpet. We steam cleaned it but it won't come up. Then DH went to the store and bought a TWELVE DOLLAR can of carpet cleaner (after we tried everything we had in our house) and it did NOTHING to fix it. Blah.

Today we spent $1.25 on 18 eggs at the store and then went to the local park. Hooray!

I'm trying to buckle down this month and truly only purchase what I need to.

Spent according to budget
Blew the budget
: Nothing spent! No driving! Nada nada nada!

I can't remember the first two days of August, so I'll start with Monday the 3rd.
3: Bought a few things at the grocery store. Made a basically-free dinner (trout DH caught, mashed potatoes w/ ingredients I already had)
4: Didn't go anywhere, didn't spend money, made a yummy dinner out of things I already had at home (including adding herbs to a really yucky spaghetti sauce I had in the fridge.
5: Bought postage to send the card my kids made for my dad's bday, about $5 at McDonald's (lunch for DS and I, and an ice cream cone. And entertainment for over an hour for DS!) and about $35 at the grocery store, where I got some great deals (but did splurge on some letter tater tots for DS, who has recently learned the alphabet and was very excited about them).
6: Didn't buy anything at the farmer's market. Played at the park and made dinner with things we had around the house (and DH loved it!)
7: Grocery shopping- did well!
8: A bit of driving and a tiny splurge for DH and me (DQ and Starbucks) but not too bad
9: $12 on stupid carpet cleaner
10: $1.25 on eggs, no 'real' driving (just to the park!)
