yesterday was a no spend!

today, got gas, then needed to stop in to pick up a prescription and then proceeded to shop without a list bought apple juice for our halloween 'cider', a cauliflower- I couldn't refuse DD1 asking for cauliflower! looks like 'brains' for our halloween dinner to go with the 'guts' (spaghetti), a winter coat (50% off), hair clips, and a fleece outfit for dd3. She really didn't need the hairclips and the fleece outfit I think I can return the outfit...
going to DD1s fall carnival tonight- already bought the tickets, maybe will eat early before we go and everything else is free, so hope that goes well...

no spend at all
spend in budget
unplanned spending

26- groceries
27- costco, unplanned lunch out
28-
29-
30- gas/pharmacy, excess spending on clothes-- ETA: carnival plan- fail.

Gone for a week...for a change I wasn't actually out there spending money, my kids got sick and I forgot about the internet for a few days there.

Now things are settling back into the normal routine and I'm back.

10/1 BUT ran into a palm tree so must pay $500 insurance deductible next week when I take van to the shop. Grrrr.
10/2 $7.35 Little Caesar's pizza - but I was craving it for 2 weeks now and it was soooo good I can't regret it!
10/3
10/4
10/5 Paid electric bill.
Going to be a spending day because going on a day trip to the Polynesian Cultural Center (have annual pass). Planning to buy kids a dvd or cd of Poly music at the gift shop-been looking for one online for a while but can't find any, so I guess I have to bite the bullet and buy it brand new. The kids have been longing for one, so I don't feel bad. I'll give myself a for the day because we're packing our own dinner.
10/6
10/7
10/8 Target and WalMart splurges, spur of the moment party invite.
10/9 Don't know what to call this one - necessary, but dumb. Got van fixed for backing into palm tree. $500 deductible paid.
10/10 Spent $6 on a book I've been looking for! Border's 40% off coupon ROCKS!
10/11 BUT I will be putting in a LARGE glowstick order which is going over my entire Halloween budget. Grrr. And I will still have to buy treats.
10/12 Spent 58 cents today. Can I count that as a ?
10/13 $50 in glowsticks, $4 for Robeks smoothie for kids (and it was tiny)
10/14 $6 at Aquarium Gearing up for tomorrow, which will be a big spend day. (groceries, gas, household)
10/15 Gas
10/16
10/17
10/18
10/19
10/20
10/21
10/22
10/23
10/24 Filled gas at an EXPENSIVE pump. Grrrr
10/25
10/26 Out to get Halloween treats and groceries
10/27
10/28
10/29
10/30 making a return today but stopping at Payless for some much-needed shoes at 50% off!
Make today a instead. Spent waaay too much at Payless. Grrrr

My Key/Goals:
= no spend 8/10
= spent within budget
= frivolous spending
= eating out 3/3
$50/$35 Halloween supplies (costumes already purchased, this is only for treats and light sticks - enough light sticks to last us the entire year)

ARGH! It looks like I'm within budget often, yet my frivolous spending is costing a TON! A LOT OVER budget!

I totalled everything up last night and I don't have the numbers in front of me, but we were about $90 over our goal on household and $380 over my goal for personal spending. (I should get close to $200 back though when our health care plan pays out my chiro bills.)

Once I get the chiro money back I will not actually be *over* budget, since we've been undercontributing to savings and I also budget 10% for contingency, but clearly I need to do a better job of sticking to goals if we want to save any "real money."

The big expense this month was gifts. I bought a couple things for my mom going into surgery, bought some small items for an organization I was volunteering with, a birthday gift for a friend's child, hostess gifts for a weekend we stayed at a friend's, and an anniversary gift and dinner for my DH.

These items always come up unexpectedly and there's no item in my budget for gifts...even though there's Xmas, my mom, my dad, my DH, DD, and various little kid birthday items and bottles of wine for friends. Should this maybe become a 'line' item in my budget so I don't feel cheated out of money that is allocated for me? Or should I just admit that there is no money for 'me' and just pool my small amount of eating out/clothing money and include gifts in there?

I don't really know how we're going to cut back enough to cover my mat leave while keeping enough money aside for up-front daycare costs for when I go back to work.

October was the first month with a really nice written budget, and we did cash too and thought we were doing pretty good.

So we had some overages including some emergencies, especially towards the end, but DH just laid on me the grand total for the month:

$744.00

I'm just stunned right now and back to looking at our budget... sigh. Maybe its time to add more "no spending days" in November

nina_yyc, I would make those gift expenses a separate line item in your budget. I allocate a certain amount for gifts each month, well actually I've just begun doing that but I plan to roll anything left over in that area into Christmas spending money. If you separate it out from your "me" money then you won't feel cheated. If you can manage it I think its important to have a little extra for yourself.
