Good news for me today: i am getting help with my son's childcare expenses from public aid! This will save me 120 a month! Yay, that's a lot for me! All is well here, though I am so tempted to buy some wool roving. I've been enjoying spinning so much lately and I just ran out of the last of my roving. I'll think on it for a few days...

I am Vicki, I have done this for the last couple month's, and am so proud of myself! Spent $1163 LESS in September than the month before. Spent $740 more in October than in September, so I need to get saving!!

My goals--Short term goals right now, an additonal $500 in savings by the end of the month. Pay off 1 small credit card. Pay only Cash for all Christmas Gifts.

How I plan to do this....
Not eating out!! Once or twice a month for DH and I to have a date night, all of us out to eat only when "kids eat free". Buying necessities and really thinking about purchases outside of necessities (will wait 24 hours for anything over $10), "gasp" cutting out my paper towel addiction- been doing great on this. Having at least 2 no-drive days a week.

My key:
No Spend
No Driving
Budgeted Spending/Necessities/Thought Over Purchase
Unnecessary Spending
: Exercise Day

Groceries $130

I spent $4.95 at the post office today, but it was to return a $70 jacket, so I'm not too broken up about it.

We also drove today, since we went to storytime at a library a few miles from our house (the ST at our library stinks), but I rolled it into a trip to the post office and a stop at Sears (to return some Lands' End purchases).

11/1:
11/2:
11/3: $142.47 necessary groceries $6.51 unnecessary groceries
11/4: $4.95

Just got my internet hooked up today so catching up...

Moving day went to plan- bought pizza lunch, cooked dinner, no other spending. Monday was a no-spend. However, monday night I managed to throw out my back so tuesday I had unexpected spending first to go to the physical therapist/accupuncturist I see and then DH bought us a rottisserie chicken for dinner so I wouldn't have to cook.

DD1's birthday was today, we had presents at lunch, and then she requested that we go out for dinner. So that's 1/2 dinners out (and it's only the 4th!) I also need to come up with a quick plan for her party on saturday. I need to go grocery shopping (maybe tomorrow I'll be able to lift grocery bags??) ...

My plan:
moving day 11/1-- pay for UHAUL, buy pizza lunch for friends helping us move, no other spending
make a budget for DD1's birthday, DD3's birthday, and Christmas.
go to cash system for a reasonable amount of 'fun' money for DH and I
put away debit and credit cards!
dinner out 2 times max, one on closing date for house to celebrate!
1 trip to costco <$150
2 CSA days $80
1 grocery trip/week <$85

key:
no spend at all
budgeted spend
excess spend

1- Moving day
2-
3- injured back PT, store bought dinner
4- DD1's b-day dinner out (1/2)

Looking at my budget and seeing either a horrible # like last month or being super stoked DH & I stay in line and now we have this amazing hunk of $$ to pay down a CC.

That's what I'm living for right now...

Continuing my no-spend trend....not because I have such incredible self control, I just don't have any money right now.

We put a lot of cash into savings last month and we have another aggressive savings goal this month which leaves us with very little extra cash.

a. Who you are...

Kim, PT WOH/PT WAH/PT SAH mama to 2 fantastic kiddos (DD nearly 6 + DS 3). DH works FT + is in his final stretch of school FT, so schedules are super full juggling homeschooling, kiddo duty, volunteering, etc.

b. Where you are going (your financial goals)...

Short-term: Keep budget in the black, rebuild basic emergency fund, + continue to knock down debt.

Mid-term: Pay off all debt w/ exception of mortgages (2 houses) + grad school loan; purchase camp.

Long-term: Completely debt free (incl. mortgages + grad school loan)

c. How you plan to get there...

#1 largest potential for savings = our grocery budget; work on taming spending, meal planning, + preparing food in advance to avoid take out

Will be increasing my work hours in the next couple of months; super important to organize the heck out of meals in advance of this shift; luckily will primarily be WAH hours. More income = faster debt eradication; DH graduates in May, so his income will also increase (close to double).

Writing all of this out encourages me there is hope; just need to stay positive, stick with the plan, + keep posting here!

GOOD LUCK IN NOVEMBER MAMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today was our weekly lunch with my mom, so we drove out to her house. Again I combined the trip with errands, though. I'm counting the hangers for the garage and the curtain hardware as unnecessary purchases, though I have thought carefully about the items and was very conscious while shopping of ONLY buying what I "needed." So I actually feel okay about these things.

11/1:
11/2:
11/3: $142.47 necessary groceries + $6.51 unnecessary groceries
11/4: $4.95
11/5: $22.16 gas for the car + $10.52 hooks for the garage + $8.44 curtain tie-back hardware

Besides survival (we are pretty poor, and I fear about what would happen if i lost my source of income) I think that frivolous spending harms the environment in a huge way. This is one way I practice environmental activism.

1 - All meals eaten at home/ate at in-laws' for dinner. Ingles - $50.00 (bought what was needed/sale only) Walmart - $59.59 (Mattress pad - ours had holes and was tearing at the seams, 2 pair tights - had none and it's getting cold)
2 - Stayed home.
3- Annabelle dental cleaning, all meals at home, day trip to Ellijay (1.5 bushels apples, $3.50 for candy as bribe for 3 hours in car, $3.50 drinks)
4 - I didn't buy an apple corer slicer and just worked my way through a bushel of apples for applesauce canning without it. Ate at home.
5- did not give in to CFA for dinner (kids night)
6 - Disappointed. I went out with tons of snacks. The kids ate them ALL while waiting at the lab for me to get my bloodwork (which took 2 hours plus the 30 min drive each way). I took them to Chipotle for dinner after letting them play at the playground and then TRU but bought nothing. Get this - $7.49 for separate entrees for all three of us, mine with guacamole and a drink - they gave the kids their dinner for free!

My best recommendation for successful no-spending? Hands down...staying out of the stores.

If I can just stay out of the stores, I don't see it and I don't want it.

If I'm out shopping, I find fifty things that I want that I didn't know I wanted before.

My motivation is fear of not having enough money for retirement.

When I do these challenges I see in black and white how much "little" purchases add up to HUGE money by the end of the month.

That motivates me not to make the little purchases.

(but this is advice coming from a woman who spent $97 on long underwear yesterday....$97!!!!!!!!! on underwear. Clearly I have a long way to go... )

I went to the mall today with ds2. I didn't buy anything and packed our lunch. I wasn't really tempted to buy anything. The ice cream and fancy coffee displays did look yummy though.

We have been on track! Having a goal is what motivates me. When I want something I don't need, I think about the goal we are saving for a smile inside knowing it will be worth it in the end. At this point, being thrifty has become a habit. The biggest thing we need to cut back on is eating out. I think having some eating out budgeted has been a good compromise so that we don't feel deprived. I know we are lucky to have a little leeway there though.
