thanks Prudence!

it was a good day! had to run a lot of errands today after picking up DD1 from school and remembered to bring snacks and a drink for the girls from home to ward off the inevitable "I'm huunnngrrryyyy" whining . just bought gas for the car... tomorrow, maybe grocery shopping, need to make a menu and a list.

Hey, I think I can do this! So far it has been a rough month as I needed new tires and a new refrigerator (and I had to refill the frig with new food to boot).

I am recently separated. Working part-time, receiving support from stbx, planning to begin my master's program in Jan. My financial goals are to: save 6 months of salary, take only minimal student loans (books and tuition at state school), and possibly have enough from my divorce agreement to put a downpayment on a house when I graduate and get a decent job. I am not 100% sure about the house part, though, because renting does have some advantages and the property taxes around here on even a very small piece of property run about 6 -8000. So I am not actually sure that it would be a great decision in the long run to buy in this area.... If I decide against buying, a larger rental is definitely a goal because this house is small (but cheap!)

My plan is to eat what is on hand. Thanksgiving will require some spending, however, and I usually shop in Nov for Christmas, but that will be minimal.
I will be ignoring the first 9 days of Nov and starting today:

no spend day
- spend appropriately
spend inappropriately

No spending planned again. My son and I spent the morning fashioning a Lego table out of an old table and some wood strips that we found in the scrap pile. It is fantastic and he has happily been playing Legos for the past hour.

Checking in early to keep myself motivated. Nothing to spend money on anyway -- dinner is prepped, laundry is hanging out on the line and we will walk over to dance class later.

We are rocking this month and I can't get over how mellow and happy the kids are. Maybe a calmer, more home-bodied mom is just the thing this family needs.

Of course, all of my hard work may still be eaten by the hospital bill, but we have another few days to wait on our appeal.

Long term goals:
Build up 6 month living expenses
Pay off car loan
Pay off dh's medical bills
Pay off remaining $1k on remaining cc

Short term goals:
Set aside Christmas funds
Keep unnecessary spending to an absolute minimum until after the holidays
Try not to go overboard this year in buying food/snacks/holiday items

Legend:
No spend
Budgeted spend
Unplanned spend

November
1.
2.
3.
4. $18 for niece's 18th bday
5.
6. dinner date with dh 25.60
7. food 69.72. NFC 31.32. petsmart 31.95. we have a small fish tank and though it's nice enough i am beginning to resent the upkeep. we've had it 3 years and i just don't put it in the same category as my cat as far as having no qualms on spending what's necessary. we've had some fish die but dh insisted on replacing them. he now agrees that maybe we should let it go. only we just bought some new fish recently so they might be with us awhile. sigh.
8.
9. $9 for parking. had jury duty and dh suggested it would be more convenient if i just took my car instead of trying to take buses/trains and worry about a schedule and having to change buses. when i got there i got it postponed anyway because we're going to a funeral today.

The day's not over yet, and I'll be spending money later as I have an appointment with my energy worker, but I wanted to check in and report that I avoided taking DS to Starbucks even though we were out and about, and I was REALLY REALLY tempted. I'm staying strong...

I'm soooo proud of myself for staying strong today and NOT spending money foolishly. I'm finding that the more I pay attention to this, the more money appears in my life. I took my change jar in and since it's a small jar both the teller and I figured it would be about $5 or so, but it turned out to be just over $17! And then at the playground I found 35 cents on the ground.

didn't end up going grocery shopping, forgot about some other errands I needed to do and by the time 5pm rolled around decided that going to the grocery store was NOT a good idea. Spent at the P.O., but that was for my biz, so it doesn't count- so a no-spend for me today!

Spent money at the library and hardware store today, but I was very conscious of what I was doing. Sometimes when I go to Ace I look up and down the housewares aisle and think, That would be nice to have. This time I told myself I did not NEED anything except the stuff on my list.

I bought a hardcover/perfect-condition Stellaluna at the library for $1 and also paid a $1 fine.

Good point, Natalya. I definitely like your idea of creating a culture of not-shopping for the children.

Long term goals:
Build up 6 month living expenses
Pay off car loan
Pay off dh's medical bills
Pay off remaining $1k on remaining cc

Short term goals:
Set aside Christmas funds
Keep unnecessary spending to an absolute minimum until after the holidays
Try not to go overboard this year in buying food/snacks/holiday items

Legend:
No spend
Budgeted spend
Unplanned spend

6. dinner date with dh 25.60
7. food 69.72. NFC 31.32. petsmart 31.95. we have a small fish tank and though it's nice enough i am beginning to resent the upkeep. we've had it 3 years and i just don't put it in the same category as my cat as far as having no qualms on spending what's necessary. we've had some fish die but dh insisted on replacing them. he now agrees that maybe we should let it go. only we just bought some new fish recently so they might be with us awhile. sigh.
8.
9. $9 for parking. had jury duty and dh suggested it would be more convenient if i just took my car instead of trying to take buses/trains and worry about a schedule and having to change buses. when i got there i got it postponed anyway because we're going to a funeral today.

Not sure how I want to count today.

Spent a whopping $95.37 at Staples today for some much needed homeschooling supplies -- paper, printer ink, pencils, erasers, card stock, paper clips, nothing fancy, but it really added up. All necessary, but not in the budget.

I think that may be end of my no-spend streak. We have all ready had a blast making stuff with our new supplies and have kept busy during a very rainy, very chilly day at home, so I am cool with spending the money.
