Because of this thread, I know that in the past three months I have spent over $1,000 on stuff...$100 for an Isis vest, $140 on some Dansko clogs, $400 on a vita-mix, over $150 on scrapbooking supplies...right now I can remember what it was that I spent it on because I'm still using those things...but in six months?

Next year?

I won't remember and that money will have just gone away.

I really need to re-focus my thinking on money...how I spend it, why I spend it. I need to write out my long term financial goals and not let little purchases eat away at the money that should be going towards bigger things.

I am Vicki, I have done this for the last couple month's, and am so proud of myself!
Short Term Goals- Not to buy meaningless junk, save $300 towards a vacation coming up, have at least 2 No Spend days a week.

How I plan to do this....
Not eating out!! Once or twice a month for DH and I to have a date night, all of us out to eat only when "kids eat free". Buying necessities and really thinking about purchases outside of necessities (will wait 24 hours for anything over $10), "gasp" cutting out my paper towel addiction- been doing great on this. Having at least 2 no-drive days a week.

My key:
No Spend
No Driving
Budgeted Spending/Necessities/Thought Over Purchase
Unnecessary Spending
: Exercise Day

Groceries- $225

Prudence, I totally know what you mean about the little things. I've been there.

Today I wanted to DO something with DS and SD (and DH) and considered a holiday outing at a local historical lighthouse museum. It did sound like fun, but it was $5 per person, so although it was for a good cause I just didn't think we should do it.

Instead we strolled along the neighboring village's business district -- they were having their annual store stroll. Free trolley rides, carolers, ice scuptures, free cider & treats and a visit with Santa. It was really nice! Satisfied our need for an outing, festive, and totally FREE.

Plus DS's photo is going to be in the local community paper -- he was very animated when he was telling Santa about the Lego train he wants for Christmas.

OTOH I've been pricing Lego train sets, and whoo-ee.

a. Who you are

part time-WAHM, unschooling dd (6yo)

b. Where you are going (your financial goals) and

living frugally to be able to
- eat local organic food
- continue being at home with dd
- save enough to have confidence to TTC #2
- give to charity

c. How you plan to get there

making all holiday related items (art / crafts)
avoiding unneccessary purchases. will figure out what that means exactly through this tracking exercise.

I am proud to say I boycotted black Friday, and actually Bought Nothing the entire weekend, avoiding the temptation of Cyber Monday as well. That was a terrific boost. Since then I think I have spent about $20 on art/craft supplies for holiday gifts and another $20 on groceries since then. Will start keeping track from now on. Let the fun begin!

relaxed-unschooler mama to dd (2003). hoping for second one. love being a mama!!

a. Who you are
Our clan is me (Kim), DH, + our (2) fantastic kiddos (DD-almost 6 + DS-3). DH works FT + is in school FT, I squeeze in 32 hrs/wk, we are homeschooling the kiddos, so a wee bit busy on the average (okay, every) week.

b. Where you are going (your financial goals) and
Soooo close to getting the monthly budget to stay in the black. Just upped my weekly hours to 32 from 25, so should do the trick. Short term goal is to stick to the budget + pay down as much debt as possible. Lots of mid + long term goals, but baby stepping...

c. How you plan to get there
Increase income - check!
Decrease spending - wrangle grocery/dining out budget, take it easy on holiday spending, eliminate library fines, find free fun/entertainment...

Have been starting fairly strong the last few months, but seem to drop off 3/4 of the way through. Want to stick it out for December; good luck to all!

Dec. 1:
Dec. 2:
Dec. 3:
Dec. 4:
Dec. 5:

Groceries/Dining Out: $112.24/$500
Holiday Spending: TBD...

My DH has headed off to the hardware store, but I only track my own spending and for me today it is going to be another day at home.

So I'm hoping for a no-spend.

I would like to join!

We are a blended family of 9. Our financial goals for December are to add to our savings account and not spend from it. We have all our Christmas shopping finished except for both sets of parents. I am working on coming up with something meaningful but inexpensive to give them. I want to wean myself of my shopping "thrills" as next year our budget is lean, lean, lean...

Budgeted:
Groceries /household $82 / $360

I signed up for some new aerobics teacher training today...which technically COULD be considered an educational cost because that is what I do to make money.

But this was extra training that I don't have to have, and truth be told aerobics teachers make so little money (at least at my club) that it really is just a "hobby" for me. Having this training won't increase what I'm making at the club right now, it will just give me another course that I could teach if I wanted to.

So I'm counting it as unecessary spending.

It is part of my "hobby" budget like marathon race registrations and such. Unecessary for life, but definitely adds fun to my days...and that is worth something, right?

Another quote from that 365 Ways to Live Cheap book that I'm reading right now:

"The Ten Second Rule"

"Want to curb that leaky faucet of unnecessary Spending? Here's a great tactic. Whenever you are in a store and you pick up an item, hold it for ten seconds. During those ten seconds, ask yourself if you really need it and also if that money wouldn't be better used somewhere else. You'll almost always frind yourself putting that unnecessary item back on the shelf and walking away, quite proud that you didn't waste your money on something so unnecessary."

We sold a stroller! So we're getting $200 from that, I have a different one listed on CL for $35, and tonight am putting on a bouncer ($35), carseat ($75), carseat base ($20) my wedding dress ($350 obo), and DH's car ($500). I'm also selling a ring sling, podaegi, and various diapers on DS. Hoping to make enough to pay a larger bill and most of our state taxes so we can get the hold on renewing our tags (due end of Jan) removed...and have one less bill, of course.

I'm also putting in my notice at work. I've just got to decide if I want to be done before Christmas, or if I'm okay with waiting and New Years Eve being my last day. This is scary, but by mid-January I'll be watching a friend's little boy, and will be making a little bit from that...so its not too terrifying! Plus the amount of stress the job gives me and our family isn't worth the money I'm making.

Dec 1: $85 for Lunch and newborn diapers
Dec 2:
Dec 3: $17 going out with friends for dinner
Dec 4:
Dec 5:
Dec 6: $9 on stuff for St. Nicholas day stockings, $7 on breakfast and snack foods.
Dec 7: $12 on pizza for lunch/dinner (from change found cleaning yesterday), $30 for groceries, yarn for DH's birthday hat, and tins for cookies at WM, $11 dinner at wendy's, $58.46 for a travel battery powered nebulizer (necessary, as my asthma is bad and the inhaler costs 10x the nebulizer meds), $8.25 for HP laptop adapter

Total for Dec: $237.71
