We canceled our home/landline phone back in December. I canceled our auto pay first, then canceled the phone service. We had a paper bill for $20+ when I called. The rep told me to ignore that bill and they would send a final bill. I received the final bill of $9.33 and paid it by check immediately back in early January. It said FINAL BILL on it. Just yesterday I got another bill that says we owe 24 cents. It didn't have any details on it for the 24 cents, it actually shows the 24 cents as past due. Seriously???? Is 24 cents worth the paper and envelope and postage for them to send it to me in the first place? I am certainly not writing another check for 24 cents. Do they really expect me to bring them a quarter somewhere? So SILLY and wasteful!

I realize the billing systems are automated and a real person doesn't look at the outgoing bills. There certainly COULD be an automated process that stops "FINAL BILL" notices under a dollar from going out, though.

I believe it. I calculated the interest on my property tax wrong and got a whopping 9 cent refund check in the mail from them.

irritating huh? I've also noticed on a couple of my bills that if the final bill has a credit balance of $5 or less that they keep it. It happened to me with a phone company.

Call them, I am sure they will dismiss the bill. I think they must be automated because I have gotten a few of those from credit card companies after the bill was paid in full.

I bet this is exactly what happened! I vaguely recall recycling a second FINAL BILL the day after I paid the first FINAL BILL. Um, a FINAL BILL is a FINAL BILL, right????? I am annoyed at the wastefulness of the practice more than the 24 cents, so I suppose I will call them the next time I do finances (every Tuesday). I don't want them to keep sending me bills for 24 cents every month. They seem desperate and just might!

LOL. Happened to me too.
Wonder if you don't pay if it would go into collections. Almost would be funny to get a call from an agency trying to collect the 24 cents

I was thinking that too! I would personally pay it to avoid the expense of time and effort down the road in trying to dismiss the 24 cents.

I am curious how you would pay the 24 cents. Would you write a check for 24 cents and mail it? Would you drive somewhere and hand them a quarter?

So wasteful, but I've had things like that happen before.

Honestly, I'd probably just send them a check for the $0.24 in the mail and be done with it. Yes, it's a PITA. But it would be more of a PITA to take a ding on your credit for a past due amount.

In the 1990's when I lived in MN people loved to write checks. I went to buy my monthly bus pass at the little kiosk thing in the student union of the university I worked for and watched and impatiently waited while the woman in front of me write a check for about $.50 to pay for a single postage stamp.

I once got a bill for 44 cents. I did pay it, in person - and the woman taking my money laughed the whole time! It was from my doctors office, so I stopped by when I was in the neighborhood.

Get some tape, a piece of paper, and 24 pennies. If you mailed that in it would take care of the crazy bill and probably give some one a good laugh.

I did that once, when my final phone bill was nine cents. There was no WAY I was writing a check for nine cents. I was super mad I had to spend 41 cents on a stamp to send in the nine cents.
