We did fairly well this week. Only one meal out and that was lunch for Ladybug and me and a coffee for DH on the trip back yesterday. I didn't pack DH's lunch once and he ended up not eating any because the stuff he dug out of the fridge was not "quick meal on the run" friendly This made me very sad, I'd rather he had bought lunch, but oh well I'll redouble my efforts to make sure he has breakfast and lunch every day.

I haven't checked-in for a few days but we haven't eaten out at all and it has been a week into the challenge. Not even lunch while running errands.

We have also been gluten/soy/dairy/chocolate/sugar/dye/egg/corn free which makes eating out impossible LOL

Mom to 4! Welcomed Aila Wren on Friday, February 25th!

My goal this week is to --- not eat out!! We ate out once last week and it wasn't cheap.

Thursday, we have activities until 4:30, so I will put chili in the crock-pot in the morning instead of going out to eat because we get home late.

Thanks for all the inspiration!

I'll join! Our monthly budget is $650.

I did eat lunch out today.... But only because a friend invited me to go out to lunch with her, and I so rarely have the chance to get away without the kids that I did go for it.

But other than that, I don't think we've eaten out at all so far this month. Yay!

DH decided we'd eat supper out yesterday (Chinese buffet - which is NOT cheap here in Toronto) to celebrate DS14 first day of high school ...BOGO coupons, so that helped a bit. But that's it for the month.

Breafast was eggs/toast/yogurt...not sure what supper will be tonight. I'm considering even putting on a big pot of chili - that usually happens when the high hits about 10 (50F), but it's reasonably cool today...

I am lurking on this thread to get ideas. I am just getting into meal planning now that my DH is hard at work in his new job and I am a SAHM.

A question for you wise ladies, for those of you who do meal planning for an entire month how do you shop sales? Right now I am getting the weekly flyer and plan my meals around what is on sale each week. If you plan a month at a time are you shopping sales/using coupons? How often are you going to the grocery store?

Thanks Mamas.

I go to the store either once a week or once every 2 weeks depending on sales. I stock up what's on sale and once it's in my house, I plan from that. I do sometimes buy something special that isn't on sale because I want to cook with it, but I usually plan for the month around what I've already got.

We did end up going out for a cheap dinner Tuesday after my niece's volleyball game. Yesterday I made a huge pot of lentil soup and rice so we have leftovers. Yay! We might go to another volleyball game today but I already told DH we will have to leave early so we can eat at home.

Welcome!

I do meal planning about 5 days out. Its much easier, esp if you use a lot of fresh ingredients or feed the freezer etc. Once you start shopping sales, you will figure out what goes on sale when in your area. Such as chicken seems to go on mega sale about every 6 weeks in my area. We stock up, cut up, etc and plan our meals going forward around it. That includes cutting up at home, or different meat stock based on the bones left from the chicken buying. Also, you can budget into your monthly grocery total that you will buy a certain something in bulk that month.

Since I use a local service to deliver organic produce and dairy weekly, I shop at the local grocery for canned items etc about twice a month normally.

Once you get a system going, you will be able to plan out more.

I turned the leftover steak into a stir fry with peppers, onions and zucchini and had that over noodles. The kids had a little of everything.

Today, breakfast is a smoothie and a bagel, lunch is leftovers or another hot pocket, dinner is pizza.

We did great this week with all lunches and dinners homemade. We had friends over yesterday and I made a frugal dinner of roast chicken/veggies/ fruit salad.

Our only splurge this week was 2 slices of cheesecake for a special anniversary dessert.

Tonight might be a lazy dinner of pasta with some leftover chicken tossed on top and salad.

We did really well this week, except we ate lunch out at a Taiwanese restaurant today. It was soooo good, though!!!

Am motivated to do all meals at home this week.

Good to hear how everyone's doing!

Confession time....
Had a vanilla roibos tea latte from Starbucks on Saturday morning.

Bought 2 New York Striploin steaks from the local butcher for $3.50 each on Sat. More than I normally spend on meat but still a good price for striploin and SO tasty! yum....

And Sunday evening DH & I were having supper with my family out of town. We'd had brunch before leaving home, but supper wasn't for a few hours yet and I was HUNGRY (5 weeks pregnant) so we went to a local restaurant and split a sandwich, fries & salad. Cost us less than $20 but was still a meal out. Oh well.

Mon & Tues we're staying at the in-laws farm to help out DH's siblings while his parents are away, so we'll be eating their food and not our own. Maybe that makes up for this weekend's splurges?

Bought some freshly ground whole wheat flour yesterday (they ground it right in front of me!) and am looking forward to making bread later today.

Wed - Fish, couscous, & veg
Thu - Chickpea stew
Fri - Bean nachos & fresh veg
Sat -Frittata & toast
Sun - Vegetarian chilli with cornbread

Dinner last night ended up being broccoli cheddar soup with french bread croutons (I was out of peas! Peas are a must for fried rice!)

So tonight will likely be fried rice, provided I go to the store and get peas

Joining. We don't eat out but rarely (can't remember the last time we did, actually), but I've been struggling with hyperemesis this pregnancy and so we've done a lot of convenience foods. The sickness is easing, so I'm back to cooking.

This weekend we did:

Roast beef sandwiches w/au jus
Meatballs, mashed potatoes, and green beans
Chili
Fajitas

Tonight is a casserole of some sort. I've got a pack of chicken and a pack of ground beef in the fridge so we'll use up one tonight and one tomorrow. We'll do potato soup Wednesday, but I've got to get potatoes first. Then probably leftovers on Thursday and I'll grocery shop on Friday.

So far this month we have eaten out just once (pizza on 9-9 with was very good). I knew we doing good when going out for simple pizza felt like a huge treat.

I made homemade pasta on Friday and used some of it for lasange for the freezer and at the rest fresh with a mushroom sauce. I also made some chili that I don't think is edible. Still not sure how a wrecked it.

DH and DSs are going out for breakfast for DH's birthday this a.m. We'll eat supper at home though.

I didn't end up cooking dinner last night. DS1 and I were stuffed from a little overzealous snacking. DS2 has a fish sandwich and cucumbers and dh had a sandwich and some potato soup I made yesterday.

Tonight we're having dinner at my mom's. No clue about the rest of the day. I did pack ds1's lunch so he's having ham and cheese sandwich, cucumbers, fruit snack and a teeny bag of chips.

Today:

b-bagel with cream cheese, coffee
l-leftover au gratin potatoes
d-chicken bites, roasted potatoes, veggie

Dh's out of town today so who knows what he'll eat. DS2 had a pb&j english muffin for breakfast #1, he'll have more breakfast and lunch at daycare. DS1's having breakfast at school and I packed him a pb&j english muffin, cucumbers, fruit snack and chips.
