Micah, for now I would put it in a free checking account.  I wouldn't worry about incruing interest just yet, I would just want it to be liquid.  After you figure out your living expenses and have a little set aside put that into a savings acct.  If you are trying to get a little more interest for your money you could look into an ing account.  Its still liquid but it will take a few days to get to you, and it supposedly yields higher interest.  Plus they are often running "deals" where you get so much money for starting an account for a certain amount and not touching it for a month or so.

Well, didn't get my coffee table, which is a bummer.  Hubby insisted it could fit in the car so he didn't want to borrow the van.  Guess what, didn't fit in the car.  And it was right before work so I couldn't borrow my parents van or anything.  Oh well.  I didn't need it, but still a disappointment.  Knowing me it would have been gotten rid of shortly after anyway-I'm pretty fickle when it comes to furniture, lol.

Scarlet did some more phonics work today on starfall.  She's really coming along nicely and without me pushing her.  She needs assistance but she's making strides for sure.  Then we watched shapeville park and word factory.

Today I'm making a double batch of meatloaf, but one meatloaf will be made into single servings in my muffin tin.  I'm going to freeze them for hubby's lunches.  Maybe in the future I will freeze a second batch for quick lunches for us and lunches on the go as well.   I"m also thinking about finally doing pumpkin brownies.

Right now the babes are outside playing and I'm trying to take a minute to destress.

Gratefuls- my nephew just turned 13!  I already have his gift from yardsaling earlier this year and we are going to try for the river which is a free day.  So getting to celebrate without the money stress!

We will actually have a little money left over this week!  Not a lot mind you but a little bit!

Making these for snack for later: http://sallysbakingaddiction.com/2013/04/26/soft-baked-funfetti-sugar-cookies/  Totally unhealthy non-food indulgence because I am hormonal and bleeding.  And the rain is doing a number on my mental state.  Second day in a row it's cold and raining.  All I wanna do is watch movies and eat.  Definitely NOT a good idea.  I cleaned my entire house yesterday and now I'm outta my mind and don't know what to do with myself.  I need to come up with something to keep my children busy today.  Ya know those moods when you can't even stand to be around yourself because you are so miserable???  eyesroll.gif

Maybe some bread and broccoli cheese soup will pull me out of my funk.  Maybe.  Rain sucks.

This month has been expensive...The medical bills I paid really did a number on my savings. I was trying to not let my combined checking/savings get below 2000$ due to relying on xdh solely for monetary support, but those bills and the extra I spent on the trip (probably about 100$ xdh gave us another 100$ for spending money since some of it wasn't returned from when it was stolen and I still spent 100$ of my money, I did buy some clothes for the kids at the outlet and overall it wasn't expensive but this month with the 340$ IN extra medical bills it was bound to happen. Grateful I could actually pay the bills and go on a vacation.

Disappointed xdh had to work today, he was suppose to have the kids all day but he got screwed over due to a coworkers dressing fitting and won't get the kids until around 3:00pm.

Realize the summer is about to end, I am already committed to a few events in the next few weeks, so I won't be adding anything new that costs me money~!

Next month I am going to work on getting my savings back to 2000$, which means no paying down the credit cards.

Did some online school shopping/buying a head for dd for next spring. I will be honest, buying in advance paired with thrift shopping saves me probably thousands of dollars on the kids wardrobes. They have normal sized wardrobes, I don't buy them a ton, but they have more than 5 outfits. I also rummaged through the closet and pulled out pants for DS that i had already bought and he has 4 new pairs of pants and 1 pair of handme down levis for the school year I spent a total of 13$ on last year.

Children's place is have an awesome sale online, you spend 60$ you get 30% off. I was also able to get free shipping and an extra 5% off with my place card so I got ds 2 pairs of pants, 1 pair of shorts, 1 shirt and dd 6 pieces for next year all for 43$ which is awesome and I also didnt have to fight them at the store lol!

So other than a couple more pairs of pants for ds, undershirts, underwear and 1 pair of nicer shoes, ds has his school wardrobe.

On the school front, since ds's school is in xdh's neighborhood, I won't be able to get him reduced lunch. I don't want misrepresent and if we are using his household, plus xdh claims him on taxes,  I just feel it would be wrong to apply for reduced lunch. Regular price is 2.35$. I am fairly certain I can make him a lunch for less than that, but as of now I am going to start out letting him buy it a few days a week until I get the hang of making it. Plus when he stays at his dads he will have to buy lunch the next day. I am not too thrilled with the school lunch in general. They allow 2 milks or 2 juices and I am sure ds get chocolate milk. But about half way through the year I asked him to stop getting milk, because I believe him to be lactose intolerant. He drinks almond mlk at home. So I would like him to drink less juice, his weight is heavier than I'd like, and i hate him to drink so many sugary calories. So him bringing his lunch a 2-3 days will be a good thing I am sure.  I still don't have many ideas on what to feed him though...

I am going to use this as a catalyst to eat better as a family in general. I mentioned we eat out more than I would like and I realize with DS in school and less activities like during the summer we will be less likely to eat out. Just cutting out one eat out meal for us 3 would pay for ds's school lunches for a week. I really want to start cooking more from scratch, right now I am starting slow, working on cooking items at home more, starting with the frozen dinner kits like chinese stir fry and chicken fajitas and using my crockpot more often, plan to tranisition slowly and I am sure my budget will be happier.

xdh cannot get me a new phone so looks like i need to  go ahead and move to straight talk, do not want to spend more money right now on a new phone but need one badly.

want to go ahead and cancel crappy dental plan, found the local college does a lot of preventative procedures like checkups and cleanings for 10$. been wasting my money on that plan....38$ a month...

It's gloomy here as well.  Not raining right now, but it has and it will again I'm sure.  We were supposed to go to the river tomorrow but I have a feeling thats out.  We will still visit, but now I need to ask if I should bring a food dish of some sort.  On Sunday my mom invited us to go to Purina Farms, which is a free place near our house.  Its owned by the dog food company and they have dog shows and little events, plus you can pet rabbits, see a cow milked, they have tractor bicycles and rope swings, etc.  Just great kiddo fun.  So we will be doing that on Sunday.  I will make us some muffins for the road and then if the kids are hungry we will splurge on mcdonalds dollar menu at one with a play place.

Gratefuls for today-

I have a mixture of gratefulness and dread at that site you linked, justmama, lol.  My waistline is not going to be happy.

I'm grateful we have the ten dollars for a trip to McDonalds if we decide to take it.  Yay for jury duty, right?

The kids are playing outside while they can with their niece.  I'm off to look at that website, check more of my moneysaving sites, and make a batch of pumpkin muffins.

Just had to pop in and toot my poor ass horn, lol.  Like I said we are supposed to go to the river tomorrow but there is a decent chance the weather will put a cabash on that.  So I asked my sil what she wanted to do if we couldn't go.  She has like, no ideas.  NO plans at all for her son-no cake, no dinner, natta.  So I said I would pull together some stuff for a spaghetti dinner and homemade brownies and they can come to our house.  I'm supplying the meat, the tomato sauce, making the brownies, and opening up my house to probably be demolished.  I asked her to bring noodles, bread, and koolaid because I simply don't have enough of that, though if she doesn't bring anything I can at least come up with noodles.  I'm grateful I hit up the good meat sales and bought that huge can of tomato paste or else I wouldn't be able to do give him a birthday.  It's his 13th birthday and she makes no plans, grr.  She makes at least as much money as my husband but doesn't have student loan bills or a car payment.  Can you tell my in laws aggravate me?  Anyway I'm proud that I'm pulling something off for the kid, and that he will get a family dinner, some brownies and a present from us at least.  And all on a budget!

Well done happyhats!  I can't imagine not at least recognizing the boy for his big 13.  My girl would have been devastated if no one did anything for her special day.  Granted, it wasn't much, but it was a dinner she wanted with her whole family together and a day out at the museum doing what she wanted.  So kudos to you for pulling off a little party for him so he can feel special.  It's not easy to feed many people on a small budget.

BabyBird, I'm glad you are back from your trip.  I'm glad you are resolved to eating better and cheaper.  Cooking at home is always a positive thing(except for the dishes.  They can go suck it.).  A word of advice, don't get in over your head right away.  Pick simple meals.  It's okay if dinner is grilled cheese with a side salad or pasta with frozen veggies.  Sometimes simple is better.  We don't get fancy at my house because 3 out of 4 of us won't eat it.  Simple is good.  Lunch today?  Chicken and cheese quesadillas with carrot sticks and sugar snap peas and a cup of juice.  Breakfast?  Muffins I made with overripe peaches that I sliced in half, slathered butter on, and grilled along with some fresher peaches and apples cut up.  It doesn't have to be rocket science.  Sometimes my kids eat "snack plate" for dinner and LOVE it.  It's all the healthier choices of food in the house like cheese sticks, dried fruit, nuts, cut up veggies and fruit, cold pasta, etc all put in piles on a large plate or cutting board and picked at by all 3 of them with some dipping sauces like ranch or hummus.  That's my kind of cooking!  lol.gif

This month has been a financial bummer. I just came off being in the red on my bank account for an entire week, so I'm suffering from overdraft fee anxiety. I was supposed to get $400 for a writing job, but I couldn't get her to talk to me and then she took a high dive off the cliff of insanity and started making accusations that I was hacking the "real" freelancer's account somehow. I disputed it, but I only ended up getting paid $100 for my work. DH is working double shifts three days a week, but his check was about six hours shy of what it should have been, so he needs to talk to hr before we get that money.

On the upside, I made a spreadsheet with our bills and income listed day by day with a running total and color-coded alerted for being under $100 or negative. I will update it with actual numbers each week and we can see not only if we can afford it right now but if it will chain-reaction with other bills to put us in the red months down the road.joy.gif

I need to make some GF brownies tonight.  I need something to sweet on and there is nothing I can have.  thankful I stocked up on GF baking stuff last week... not looking forward to turning on the oven.

No plans for this weekend...  going to rest and try to recover from the 1st week of work.  counting down the days until I can quit..this is strictly a survival job and i'm having a very hard time staying in survival mode.  11 more work days.  i really need the $$.. DS birthday is coming up, i have bills to pay and I want to put a few dollars aside for the holidays.  I need to make it there 11 more times... i don't have an option.  I MUST do this.

Go, Zebra, Go!  You can do this!

Well, it's dinner at our house.  The weather isn't too bad but the river was vetoed none the less.  I'm trying very hard not to stress about food.  I'll probably start on the brownies here soon, and then a batch of muffins for tomorrow as well.  My mom is bringing snacks for the kids and I'm packing them a small lunch.  Its been decided that McDonalds would probably be out now because after this dinner we'll need more butter and milk for our own menu the rest of the week.

Even though I am a bit stressed about this afternoon I have a lot of gratefuls-

-Hubby is off getting the desk I scored for super cheap

-Hubby was able to get a great deal on corn on the cob from a co worker.  His co worker is really big into the local VFW and apparently the guys go to a local farm and get HUGE bags of corn that they sell.  So we got approx 50 ears of corn for 13 bucks!  I'm able to share and fill my freezer, plus the guy didn't even ask for money until next week (he suprised hubby so we didn't have the money set aside for him).

-I think after dinner and brownies are done we will herd the children to the park.  This will be great fun for all of them plus less stress for me, yay!

-Hubby found some toothpaste in his backpack.  Lol.  This is a grateful because our darn shipment of toothpaste is taking FOREVER.  Now that we are thinking of keeping our amazon prime we will start getting shipments of everything from them, but I was getting my natural toothpastes from Swanson who I have found takes forever to ship.  So now we have a few more days of toothpaste to get us by until the shipment FINALLY arrives.

-Because the plans have changed we should have time to put the desk together and the kids can sleep in.  They wouldn't go to sleep until later than usual so no crabby kids to contend with (hopefully anyways, you never know with kids, huh?)

The job is soul sucking.  IDK if i can do it next week.  Honestly, I have a pretty high tolerance for BS (I'm a sub during the school year, remember??)...This job is just so archaic, Truly, ativan needed, pill popping soul sucking.   I need the money, badly but not if its going to wreck havoc on my mental state.  I just can NOT do call centers.  I can not do training in a call center.  I shouldn't even drive by a call center.

Grateful-  friend bought me some produce to tide things over for a few days.  $15 owed to friend  ugh

Mother is sending a check for 1 months expenses... should be here monday or tuesday

Found homeschool day at aquarium next month $8 per person vs $20, will register as soon as check arrives

Peaceful time today crocheting

Book Samaratin box arrived, CS Lewis series (complete) for DS to read.  Will send them another request after 'school' starts.

To DO:

Order bountiful baskets on tuesday am

order homeschool tix to aquarium asap

order nutcracker tix from homeschool group  (25 vs 50$)- part of xmas gift for ds

figure out what ds wants for his b'day and how the heck to afford it  (aquarium might be part of bday)

I am just feeling tired and whiny today. Must be something in the waterwinky.gif

I have a sudden home inspection scheduled for Monday morning for my certification as a foster parent. I was not expecting it for another couple months at least, and my home is only 1/2 furnished! We had a really bad puppy experience a few months ago (he ate my couch and YoungSon's bed). I took the dead furniture to the dump, and thought I had a couple months to replace it. Plus, I don't even have a bed yet for the foster child! I can explain all this, but I wanted to make a good first impression, for Pete's sake. I had budgeted to get one major piece of furniture a month, and didn't expect the home study to start until September or October.

So I have been having a panic-cleaning marathon today. Ran out of almost every cleaning product, and have no money to buy more. YoungSon has been particularly uncooperative about helping in this project. I don't know if this is typical 17 year old surliness or his autism speaking, but my stress level is high, and my patience is low.

Although I have a pantry full of staples, we have no produce, milk, bread, or meat until I get paid on the first. And I expect I will need at least one more tank of gas before then.

All in all, I just feel grumpy.

Major hugs, mamarhu.  I wish I lived closer to you, I would help you clean and share the little bit I've got.

It's been a long day but the children did enjoy themselves.  I'm feeling a bit underappreciated thanks to a grumpy husband and a destroyed home, but I'll get through it the last few hours until bed.   Oooh, bed.

Grateful that we got to pick up butter and milk, they were sorely needed.  Grateful we had food to share for nephew's birthday, and looking forward to a relaxing day tomorrow with the family.

I will update it with actual numbers each week and we can see not only if we can afford it right now but if it will chain-reaction with other bills to put us in the red months down the road.joy.gif

Holy crap, that's hardcore!  I am SO not good with numbers and spreadsheets and such.  You are quite impressive.

DS birthday is coming up, i have bills to pay and I want to put a few dollars aside for the holidays.  I need to make it there 11 more times... i don't have an option.  I MUST do this.

You got this.  You are a rockstar.  I know you have it in you.

That is a DAMN good deal on corn.  I wouldn't have room for all that in my freezer but I would definitely take it all, process it, and share amongst friends and family!

Not now but I used to waitress and it was impossible to know what my tips would be.  I'm much happier with a steady income.  Is it possible to budget off the lowest based income you know you'll take home and then call everything on top of that a very much loved bonus??  I know it's hard when there's not enough money to go around though.

I get like that sometimes.  But if there's any solace to be found in that, it's that your house is now clean and you sound like you work well under pressure.

Gratefuls:

-3 free pieces of cheesecake with strawberry topping from my neighbor.  I gave them to the kids and ate their last few spoonfuls each.  Mmmmmmmmmm.  Trying to think of what to make her to fill up her container to give it back.

-6 free skeins of yarn from my mom.  I think I'll make a new sweater and matching hat for my 5 year old to wear to school this fall.

-middle girl goes to camp tomorrow.  Feeling blessed with 5 days of camp for $40.40 out of pocket.

-went to a birthday party yesterday and my kids all got to swim in a pool for several hours which they absolutely ADORED.  It's not something we get to do very often so it's pretty special.  PLUS, we did an art theme for the present(it was a 4 year old little girl) and did all the back to school sales and spent only $13 on a big bag FULL of cool glitter paints and princess notebooks and markers and crayons and such.

It takes a while to set up. I have some things that occur on a day (Thursdays) and some that occur on a date (15th). But I'd be willing to share the template with the formula and formatting, if anyone wants it.

Check out my business, Pangaia Metaphysical Store, and radio blog, Pagan Musings.

Hi mamas.... I'm a single mama of three (soon to be four) and I am about to lose my job:/ (I'm self employed and the project I'm working on is ending and I have nothing else lined up.... nothing else there TO line up:/) I already don't make very much money (live paycheck to paycheck, have no savings, etc.) and bf (new baby's daddy, but we don't live together) is unemployed atm also).... I'm about to freak out. I really am not sure what I'm going to do:/ I need to learn very quickly on even more frugal living (I think I already live pretty simply).... I"m looking forward to going back through this thread and learning some things and making some friends :-)

FEEL like i am posting a lot here this week:

update: went to first family gathering today, sister and all her kids showed up, including the one that she said took the money from my purse. He never called and confess or apologize so I didn't feel comfortable bringing it up. I talked a little to my sister but didn't talk to him. It was very awkward but got through it and kind of glad I got that first event after the stealing over with.

Grateful: my aunt gave me a trashbag full of clothes for DS, with a lot of athletic/track pants that he desperately needed. (he still has issues with buttoning pants and he wears track/elastic waistbands most the time, especially to schoo) I had only bought him one pair for school and most the ones from last year were too small or too ripped/stained to stay in the wardrobe. Debating on taking the one pair i bought back, but will probably just hang on to them.

ETA:

almost forgot, got a reimbursement check from my insurance due to some law in the new healthcare plan it was a mere 19.86, so nothing compared to the 343$ i paid to the insurance bills this month, but nice to have a little unexpected check in the mail.

DS got some more money/gc for his bday from people that didn't make it to his party. I told him he could use the giftcard for whatever he wanted 25$, but the 30$ in cash we would use for school supplies. He had already spent some of his other bday money from the party on legos so  he has already spent some on things he wanted.

Highlandmum, Welcome.gifWe may whine a lot over here, but we are awfully nice people, full of support and good ideas!

Thanks to all who commiserated with me re: the home inspection. I got the place fairly clean, with much help from BigGirl and even some from YoungSon, and was feeling sort of proud of myself. Then I checked my calendar to confirm the time of her appointment. It is for Wednesday, not tomorrow! That means 2 extra days to re-mess the house, and 2 more days to stress over it! Oy, vey!

On the grateful side -

The landlord unexpectedly showed up and replaced several rotting planks in the back deck. He has been aware of these for months, but decided to fix them this weekend. This is important, as they would be seen as a safety hazard in the inspection. He is also planning to replace the dilapidated fence this summer. That has been needed for at least 2 years.

Next weekend, BigGirl and I plan to visit a local farm and get 50 lbs of corn to freeze (inspired by the post above!). We blanch it and cut it from the cob, and it lasts us much of the year. Will see what other fruits and veggies are available too.

I shared my cleaning panic with my 95 year old mom, who offered to come over and help by doing my laundry for me. I didn't have any laundry that needed doing, but it was so sweet of her to offer! She had even figured out a ride here, so I would not have to go pick her up.

Rhu - mother,grandmother,daughter,sister,friend-foster,adoptive,and biological;not necessarily in that order. Some of it's magic, some of it's tragic, but I had a good life all the way (Jimmy Buffet)

awww, that's so sweet of your mum, mama.  Tell her she's earned her rest, lol!

Welcome highland mum.  And babybird, keep on chatting.  Sometimes I feel like I'm just chatting to myself, lol.

Well, next week will be rough but then, THEN hopefully we'll be back on solid footing and be able to throw some serious money at the credit card and have some more comfort.  But next week we'll have to cash in change and suffice on fifty bucks for gas, groceries and anything else that pops up.  Not fun.  And there is a book fair I'd love to go to, but I don't think I'll be able to do that...which leads to the great mama guilt even though we have tons of very nice books at home.  On the plus side, I got the speakers to work!  So the computer is in working order again even though I can't print anything quite yet.

My sister had a car accident today but luckily her and her children didn't get too banged up.  Unfortunately her car is totaled, and she is pretty sore (she already has back and hip issues).  Grateful it wasn't worse, that she has comprehensive insurance so she will come out okay in the end, and that I live closeby so I can lend a hand.  We've offered to let her use our car for work since she works opposite hours of my hubs.

This happened after our outing, which was lovely.  The kids got to see a lot of animals and it didn't cost us anything besides gas.  Of course after the turmoil of my sister's accident hubby went to stay with her so my dad could go home (my dad had brought her to the er after he convinced her she was banged up and needed checked out) so we ended up with dollar menu mcdonalds.  On the plus side hubby won a whole meal from those silly token on there so we basically broke even.  At least there was that.

mini, whine, xdh just paid support today, the 29th, so that means it will be probably friday or monday before it hits my bank account, grhh. He said he would give me a loan until then, but in theory I don't need a loan, as I have my EF, but it just irritates me. My savings account has 500$ in it, which is the lowest it has been since the divorce. I have most of the EF in checking, waiting for my rent check to clear. We have our camping trip coming up and I am just so tired of spending money, blah!

sorry about your sister happyhats, glad everyone is okay!

Thanks for the hello's, mamas. It is really nice to find a place to vent/talk/(even whine!lol) where everyone is in a similar boat. Today was a pretty good day.... despite being down to basically nothing in my bank account, I worked out a trade with a friend, for me to take photographs of her family, for several weeks of fresh organic produce! (she has a mini farm) so today she brought over tons of chard, tomatoes, spaghetti squash, and some beautiful flowers. So, we had a great pilaf for dinner! I also just realized I think I qualify for WIC (especially with baby #4 on the way) and so I'm going to contact my case worker (I'm already on Medicaid) tomorrow and see if she can help me out with that. Pretty sure I have about $2,000 coming in from my last project and that will probably need to last me a couple/few months. Between that and child support, I THINK I can do it. Rent is the worst thing for me right now.... $800/month..... and then school starting (clothes, supplies, etc)... .UGH. Now Im worrying typing it out. We'll see.

Anyway, hope everyone is having a good night. It is still BEAUTIFUL here where I live, very fall like, so we are all enjoying time outdoor (great for free fun!)

highlandmum, welcome to our little corner of the interwebz.  Sucks when you have to be here but at least you are in good company.

Gratefuls:

-traded my neighbor some hand-me-downs for her daughter for some tomatoes from her dad's garden.  They look awesome.

-while looking for that clothing I realized that my littlest one will fit into all her sisters' jeans this year as she's finally consenting to wear jeans.  I don't have to buy anything for them this year other than probably socks.  Even their snowsuits and boots will fit this year.

-coffee.  caffix.gif

-my cat is recovering from his adventure outside overnight without vet assistance.  Thankfully I was a tech in my former life and I've kept him from serious infection.  He had some big wounds to clean and treat unfortunately.  Hard to tell what it was but we have fisher cats, coyotes, hawks, etc here.  Could have been anything.
