Angelbee, I know how you feel. I had to spend almost 24hrs combined jumping through hoops in different offices for me and my DS's aid. It was very hard, but it really really helps.

Well, I'm stuck home waiting for one of my kids to come home from a sleepover and I have another kid I'm watching for a few hours and I checked my bank balance and if my landlord cashed my check yesterday or he cashes it today, it's gonna bounce.  duh.gif  I have $100 in my underwear drawer for absolutely emergencies that I can go throw in the bank but a $35 fee is gonna piss me off. It's only gonna bounce by $30 too. WTF?  Obviously I was way off in my math, which hasn't happened in the last 6 years of being poor like this.  God I suck lately.

Gratefuls:

-we saw the sun again for about 2 hours which was AWESOME!

-we got 2 garbage bags full of hand-me-downs from my 6 year old cousin yesterday.  It was so much that I actually have to take some and bring the rest to our preschool and goodwill to spread the wealth because we can't possibly accept it all.

-I was given a blu-ray player a few days ago by someone who bought a nicer, newer one so that's exciting!  I hear it won't make a difference in the picture quality of movies because my tv is so very old and crappy but that's okay.  It's cool to have one because we can borrow blu-ray movies from the library now too.

SO...........my rent check is gonna bounce but I own a blu-ray player and my 5 year old has more clothing than she can possibly wear.  Sweet.  I feel like a statistic.eyesroll.gif

I just had to say that I so relate to this because I skip well vists also and I am one of THOSE parents as well.

Also on the Blu ray and clothes, don't beat yourself up. What else do you do for entertainment? Do you even have cable? Also where did the clothes come from? How much are hand me downs, bought by someone else, or were bought used?  We just got museum memberships and I felt crappy for spending the money until I realized that what I paid for a year membership most people spend on 1 or 2 months of cable. We don't have cable at all. My kids also have more clothes than they could ever need but most are hand me downs or were bought by my in laws. I just got my very 1st smart phone and feel crappy about that too but it is not a top of the line phone, it is basic as far as smart phones go. We also pay about half of what most people pay per month for phone service because we have Boost not a big name company. It is all about how you look at things. Perspective is everything!

This-    I have a no-name cell phone that's practically free compare to the parent company it's run off of (virgin vs sprint)  I get full unlimited 'smart' phone for $50 month vs sprint for god knows what and its the same darn thing.    We've had museum and zoo memberships in the past and I need to renew at least one of them soon. It's going to be too hot to do anything here in a couple weeks.

We only have cable because it's cheaper to have cable/phone/internet than to just have internet (go figure).  We borrow tons of items from the library and honestly I love cable because DS watches learning channels and science channels for homeschool.

I wish we had hand me downs.  I stalk the clearance racks for DS, sadly adult men's stuff doesn't go on deep discount that often.

Today I'm thankful that my stomach feels better.  I think everything is psych related- so hard to tell when you have psych issues and stomach issues.

This is happyhats, I had to sign in thriugh facebook. Justmama, thanks for the advice on beeswax. I think micheals has some I could use a coupon. I will look for better grades, more local, etc after I experiment. I think making beeswax candles would be awesome once I played around with them, and make awesome gifts.

Still tired today but overall feeling better. Doing some cooking-kale chips, banana bread, and chocolate chip pie on the menu.

Need to fight the phone company for overcharging us again, ugh. And jury duty finally told me my excusal was denied. A little annoying mostly because its three months late, lol.

hug2.gif Thanks guys.  You are right.  I don't have cable.  We have netflix but I'll be cancelling it next week.  The hand-me-downs were from family but my guess is that my Aunt got most of them from Savers(the thrift store) or hand-me-downs from others.  She's quite frugal with clothing.  There was a lovely bright green Lands End winter jacket that looks brand new too though.

Zebra, I'm glad you are feeling better.  I know what you mean about the psych issues combined with stomach issues.  My anxiety issues make my stomach knot up so bad it's hard to eat or even sit up straight sometimes.  My anxiety was better on the antidepressants but it messed me up all sorts of other ways so I stopped taking them.  Are you taking any meds for your psych issues?  Are you at least under a doctor's care for it?

AngelBee, Are there churches nearby that you could call for immediate help with groceries? Carrying twins, you really need to get those calories in.

Ok I need advice. It's 8 days to payday. My husband's truck is empty, the van has less than half a tank and we have $40 for gas between now and payday. Gas wouldn't be a big deal except that the stuff we need gas for is my son's speech therapy and dh has to get to work. Luckily we are only 2.5 miles from the therapy place and dh's work is close by. Where I'm struggling is that we have a water bill due today for $69.17 and $72.74 in the bank (the $40 for gas is in cash). I should pay the water bill right? Part of me would rather be late on the water bill and have that $$ in case we need it..but then the other part of me wants all our bills paid!

I would wait on the water bill unless they are going to charge you a late fee.  For me it would be worth one bill being a week late to have a little peace of mind in case something came up.

Can you send a partial payment on the water bill? I would do that just to show you are trying, then catch up the rest when the paycheck arrives.

Ditto. I'd wait even if they charge a late fee as long as it's not s huge amount compared to the bill {here ours is normally less than $5}.

We have good news for once! Went to our city appointment for Utility bill assistance, and they ended up paying $315 on our electric and water bills! I had to do a small co-pay on the water {$30}, and I have 3 weeks to pay the rest of the electric {$400}, but $315 paid on them really really really helped. I should be able to pay the rest and get us fully caught up by the end of the month!

I don't think they do a late fee, I'm not sure because I've never been late.. :( I think I'm going to wait though...8 days is a long time with 0 money and not much food...

I agree with pps, micah. Send a partial or wait. Im glad you got your aid, frugalmama. I have so much anxiety right now, as much about money as anything. It doesnt help my anxiety that it's my first day of my period and my cold/sinus issues keep holding on.

In good news-
I'm getting a hair cut from my sister, and my eyes done as well.

I also got my health stuff in the mail, and not a moment to soon. I did my first tooth whitening, I'm doing a face mask, and starting on helping my teeth. Spa day at home! If I don't feel better soon Im going to have dh cash out some vacation days so I can go to the dentist without sacrificing our savings.

Im making pumpkin brownies, leftovers for lunch, and tuna sandwiches with kale chips for dinner. Minimal cooking and still mostly healthy.

Right there with you happyhats.  Today's day 1 for me as well.  I'm not sure if the back pain is related(I usually get lots of lower back pain but this is exceptionally agonizing this month) but I'm a mess righ tnow.  It's mostly off to the left side and wraps around my hip and spasms down my leg to my knee.  Ugh.  Motrin doesn't even touch it.  I stole my kids' rice pillow to heat up but it's only helping a very little.

micah, I agree with everyone else.  Just send them $20 and catch up when the money is there.  As long as it's not going to be shut off, you should be okay.

zebra, I'm glad you are feeling better.

frugalmama, I'm so glad you have great news.  That's a huge amt you guys got help with!  That's a huge reason to be happy!

So as if paying a shut-off notice on my electric wasn't enough, I just got a shut-off notice on my gas.  *sigh*  No fun.  I applied months ago for heating assistance but as most of you probably know, it takes months to go through.  I called them and apparently none of the award letters have been released yet.  And National Grid told me that they won't wait for the letter.  I have until the 15th to come up with the $101.36 or they'll shut me off.  I have $6 in the bank.  Super.  eyesroll.gif  I'm going to talk to the social worker at my daughter's Head Start preschool because it's her job to network and guide parents through the assistance system.  SOOOOOOO hopefully she'll have some thoughts on who I can contact for help or even just to forestall the shut-off.  $6 won't go very far.

Can I join in? I kept getting referred to this website's forums when I googled questions so I decided to start playing here rather than TheBump. Seems a lot more like my kind of people here. I have a 10.5 month old daughter who is awesome in perfect in my opinion. She's walking and mimicking everything. We know she knows a few words but she's not using them yet. We just found out I'm pregnant with number two. I'm almost 7 weeks, due date is at the end of October. My daughters been on medicaid since she was born. We lived with my mom when she was born until Halloween. Issues came up with my mom so I moved in with my dad and my fiance moved in with his best friend. I'm young and since we aren't married yet my dad wouldn't let him come with me. We did that until January until I got back to working as a nanny and decided that we'd move on our own and figure it out.

Well a week before we moved my boss sent me on temporary leave for stupid reasons (may explain later) and that was January 25th. So we've been living in our apartment by ourselves with no money. Had to borrow rent for March, borrowing money for gas for my fiance to get to work since he got a new job, but we live out in the country and his job is 17 miles away. I did work a few days last week for my old boss and was supposed to this week but I realized the profit difference was only $50 so I told her I couldn't work this week and took the pay from last week and put it towards getting my at home job started. I'm now training for Live Ops which takes calls for products and services like the infomercials you see on tv and such.

I spent all day yesterday off and on the phone with my case worker to get us on SNAP and medicaid for pregnant women. I think I have the nicest lady in the world. She wasn't rude or judgey like I've dealt with in the past. She's trying to get us emergency benefits.

I've read this entire thread and you ladies just seem really great so I wanted to come by here first. Hope everyone has a great day and weekend.

Welcome, the more the merrier. Well, we aren't always merry but ya kniw, lol.

Tomorrow should be an awesome day. I'm hitting a yardsale and few thrift stores with my sis and mom. Then in the afternoon my sis, hubs, and I are seeing the new oz movie. I must stay strong not to overspend thrufting, lol, but I have done pretty well with that lately. Since we are seeing a matinee its cheaper than seeing it later, and my parents can watch my babes.

I found a neat website you ladies may enjoy, hundredzeros.com. Its free ebooks of all kinds. Even most computers have a kindle now so I figured many mamas in here could enjoy it. I downloaded like 20 books to my tablet yesterday!

Welcome crunchmonkey.  I was 19 when my oldest daughter was born so I know those crappy dynamics of living with your parents and being a young parent yourself.  It's tough at any age really. There's a very fine line of respecting your parents' home and staying firm in your role as parent.  I don't envy your situation.

happyhats, how did you do on your thrifting?  Thanks for the website, I'll have to check it out.

Gratefuls for us:

-Not sure if I already shared this but my neighbor(side by side duplex) agreed to let me use the strip of land next to her driveway for my garden again this year.  Everything else is shady or just plain hardpack dirt/sand/rocks due to the massive oak in the backyard and not suitable for gardening without massive dumps of compost and soil that I can't afford.  So I'm super excited to get started gardening again.  I have all my seeds started inside in egg cartons already!

-We finally paid our library late fees so we can rent books again.  oops.gif  So we hit up the library for some free books last week.

-tomorrow is going to be a lovely warm 45degree sunny day so I'm taking the kids hiking in the morning.  Then we go off to my parents' house for free lunch and visit, and then off for a playdate.  A nice busy day and some free food and time outside.  Up here in New England we get so few sunny days in the winter so we go weeks with grey skies and miss out on all that good vitamin D.  My kids could use some sunshine and vitamin D tomorrow!

I was able to land a 5 day subbing job (4 next week than 1 the monday after spring break )  I'm not crazy about high school science but I need the money.  There are only 10 weeks of school left and I need to find a solution to my income issues. AND a summer job.

I need to use spring break week to go sit at DES and get re-approved for the next 6 months.

I have no idea what I'm going to do about therapy.

fwiw- my old roommate just makes me cry every time I see her.  The stress isn't worth it.

What's up with therapy zebra?

I feel like a huge jerk.  I bailed on my therapist the week of Christmas.  I just stopped going and missed an appt purposely because it got too intense.  And I feel badly because it's not her fault that I'm a hot mess.  She wrote me a lovely handwritten note telling me that she is assuming I don't want to continue treatment but that I'm always welcome back.  mecry.gif

whew, just got back from a spontaneous job at the church I work at. I am tired. I work sunday mornings every week and make 20$ for 2 hours, I was asked to do child care this evening so I made another 30$ so 50$ today and of course no childcare costs because I bring the kiddos along. I know it isn't much, but this extra bit really helps out for my splurges throughout the month like eating out and such, and for birthday/holiday expenses.

Maybe I should look into doing this for a second church, but I am tired worked 5.5/hours in a day which I am not used to and the kids were very active this evening vs. the mornings that I am used to.

Yesterday was a good day, but a little pricier than itended since hubby got me arbys. I got quite afew educational things for the kids, and as other pps know I had been concerned with that. I gota phonics game, a a board game that uses puzzles, plenty of books, and a set of pattern puzzles with foam blocks. I also got an Iexpensive shelf to organize their craft/homeschool closet. And the movie was awesome!

Hubby took the kids out for a couple hours to his sisters to watch her kids, so I got some alone time plus the kids got out two days in a row.

Yay for subbing and a job where you can bring the kids. Justmama, I need to get back to the library this week too, we haven't gone in way too long. I want to try to find some spanish learninggamesm movies, books etc for dd. Her daddy is reading a couple books now.

Ooooh man, panic city!  My cell phone provider just called me telling me that I had $181 in overage charges from text messages.  Apparently when I changed my plan last month to lower my monthly costs, they didn't add the unlimited texts(which I use to keep my minute usage down) and I thought they had.  irked.gif  So the guy added it on my acct and backdated it.  That would have been a HUGE problem for me.  Thank you TMobile for being on top of things!

Wooh, crisis averted, justmama! Hubby was able to find a cheaper insurance plan. We are going to start on them and then cancel the insurance we currently have, which will actually net us 40 bucks!

Another thing to be grateful for is that we will have to buy very little in the way of groceries this week.

I'm so in love with Texas STAR and Medicaid. Every single person I've dealt with has been so nice and helpful. I had to talk with my case worker all day Thursday and she came through on the emergency benefits. I got my LoneStar card (debit card for SNAP aka foodstamps, don't know what all terms are for the rest of the country) and there's no money on it yet but I know that means that within a month there will be. I'm so excited to actually have enough food to feel full now. This is doubling our grocery budget.

I also got a call from STAR (after you get approved from medicaid you go through star to pick your health plan, just covering in case it's different for other states) so I got to pick my health plan and confirm what my daughter was on since her paperwork is still being mailed to my dads an hour away. I'm going to be calling the birth center tomorrow to see if I can schedule my appointment now or wait for my card to get here. They made me pick a PCP and I have NO preference right now since I only ever go once I need antibiotics and since I generally take care of things the natural way first, I never go. So I pulled up the nearest towns zip code and they found one doctor in town accepting my health plan lol I said sure, that works!

We went to a pregnancy clinic in town to get proof of pregnancy for medicaid yesterday. They're a christian clinic with a goal of stopping abortion so they offer free ultrasounds. I figured they did that for women who planned on aborting but I went in there all smiles and without hesitation said I would be parenting this child and she offered me an ultrasound anyways, so we'll get to go back on Thursday and get one. I hope that seeing the heartbeat brings more excitement to me and my fiance.

Also found a local group on Facebook for unschooling and I think I finally found my niche. Crunchy mamas that are down to earth and not snooty. They're planning a camping trip, love. Very happy, I'm in deep need of friends especially the like minded variety.

We didn't pay our car note for February and we're now 3 days late for March. Me being a big scaredy cat, I haven't taken any calls from the financing company. I just got a call from a repo company. My account on the financing company is normal. Not sure if we can salvage it or not. They don't know where the car is, but they'll probably find it before long. We don't need the car, honestly. Since I'm now working from home. Our other car is completely paid off and in better condition with less than half the miles. Thinking about just letting the car go or at least not stressing if they find us...

You may want to talk to them, crunchy and see if you can work something out. They may be more lenient if you give them the car now, or if you can pay them for now maybe you could sell the car and pay it off. Better for your credit those ways. Congrats, btw, and Im glad things are going well for you.

Can I just say I hate having no/crappy insurance? Every sniffle gives me anxiety, which is wonderful during cold and flu season. And crappy insurance is not better there is none when there is no way to pay the diference. Sure, if I go to the er that works out okay but otherwise you have to pay upfront for procedures and prescriptions. My hubby is supposed to get new med insurance rolled out in a month or two, but unless the premiums are way less than before things are out of reach. Hubby is thinking of doing a bloodwork checkup at the walgreens clinic and I may as well. I don't have a lot of worries but a checkup is long overdue and the test is only 65 dollars.

Some gratefuls-
The kids put easter decals on the windows and drew some easter eggs to put on our walls. Then later we read a couple animal ebooks I found online. Tomorrow I plan on us reading some easter books and some more animal books. We will be dying eggs sometime soon as well.

Homemade chicken noodle soup!

Do you want the car anymore crunchy?  Just park it down the street with the e-brake on for a while if you do.  I did that for a while with my car when I was super late on payments and struggling. They didn't find it so they couldn't take it.
