Do you want to get out of debt? Start living on a budget? Be able to start saving? Then this is the thread for you! Some of us use Dave Ramsey's method but please join us even if you're following someone else/your own plan. All are welcome!

Here's DR's plan:

Pre-Step 1: Get current on your debts and do a budget
0.1 No new borrowing.
0.2 Talk with spouse and get him/her on the same page as you concerning finances.
0.3 Do a written budget
0.4 Temporarily stop all retirement contributions
0.5 Get current on all the basics (Shelter, Food, Utilities, Basic clothing)
0.6 Amputate "toys" (bikes, boats, ATV's etc) to help snowball
0.7 Cut lifestyle (Cut cable, cell, extras, eating out) and/or get a second job to raise $1000 EF.
0.8 Get current on ALL bills

BS1 $1,000 to start an Emergency Fund
1.1 Chop up/freeze CC's (You have an EF now)
1.2 Get Health insurance NOW if in the US
1.3 Get Life insurance NOW if you have considerable debt/your family couldn't make it financially if you died.
1.4 Amputate cars that you can't pay off within 24 months

BS2 Pay off all debt using the Debt Snowball
2.0 Do the debt snowball, paying all your debts from lowest BALANCE to highest.

BS3 Three to six months of expenses in savings
3.1 Start car replacement fund
3.2 Save up 20% for home purchase OR pay down existing mortgage to the point you can drop PMI.
3.3 Start furniture or other non-essential stuff replacement fund

BS4 Invest 15 percent of household income for retirement

BS5 College funding for children

BS6 Pay off home early

BS7 Build wealth and give! Invest in mutual funds and real estate

Here's the link to Dave Ramsey's website: http://www.daveramsey.com or if you want a good DR discussion forum,http://www.llnoe.com is good but hardcore. Gail vax Oxlade's Til Debt do Us Part is great tv show, very motivating. Her website is:http://gailvazoxlade.com/blog Others like Suze Orman or Mary Hunt, really doesn't matter whose method you use, just start the process to getting out of debt

DH and I are seriously considering giving up on purchasing a house and using our 11k to tackle debt. We are currently negotiating with the bank for a fair price on the short sale. The house was listed for $299, we got an accepted offer from the sellers at $285 but since they owe more than that it had to be submitted to the bank. The bank came back saying that they think it's worth $340. So we had an inspector come out and do an itemized report of all of the repairs it needs. We submitted that and a list of comps in the area hoping we can negotiate a fair price. I've decided if they don't bring the price under $300 I'm going to walk away.

Trekking, sounds like you have a good plan. $55k over what you were expecting is a lot over the life of the loan. Like you have said before though a short sale really means it will take forever because it isn't really the owners you negotiate with.

afm, I am accessing this from my phone and the last post was all I saw initially and trekkingirl's reference to puke. I thought it was a reference to my hoped for pregnancy and laughed when it was about orangemomma throwing up a new thread. Yep here is to hoping a positive pregnancy test comes my way and maybe that I can be as morning sick free as my mom and sister were.

Thanks trekkingirl. I am hoping they stick too. Or at least one of them sticks.

Job interview went well today. It is the first round of interviews and the man before me was obviously a new grad and the man after me had a masters in chemistry but had taken alternative certification route and was pretty new to teaching as well.  The director of the math science center commended me for using texting with students to increase engagement during class.  That was pretty cool. Interview lasted about 30 minutes and they went back and forth asking me questions.  I have to wait a few weeks to find out if I get a second interview where I will do a 20 minute lesson in front of students and teachers at the actual math and science center. I will be praying that if this is the right place for me, I will get the job.  The HR director said that even if I was not a good fit for the math science center she knew of several openings for chemistry /math that were coming open in the other public schools in the district so that was encouraging.

Sorry for the inadvertent vomit reference ladies!

We have 5 days to decide if we are going to commit to a huge sum of money (for us) every month for the next four years - tuition deposit for my son's private high school is due 4/10 and monthly payments will be pretty similar to the deposit.  It's been harder find work than I thought it would be - I've not given up hope though.

No worries orange, I thought it was kind of funny given my circumstances. Still waiting for a positive pregnancy test but it is only 8 dpo so it is still way early.

I hope you and your family make the best decision financially and educationally for your son. I know my parents sent me to private elementary school, then homeschooled me when it got too expensive, then public high school before I chose to attend a private college which 12 years after graduation I am still paying school loans for. 2017 will be a good year to be debt free for my family at the rate we are going.

Just paid off two big hits to my credit... slowly working on paying off the rest. I WANT TO BUY A HOUSE AND LAND BY 2015!

It's just my daughter and me so I have one income and I live paycheck to paycheck- barely getting by, honestly.

I slowly started putting money into an emergency fund but had to pull it out to pay some bills. Oh well!

I think I will start DR plan...

Jazzy sounds like you have made an excellent first step toward financial freedom. Congratulations!

I got a positive pregnancy test today! I am so excited. My mom was ecstatic. I can hardly believe the ivf worked. Beta test on Wed and Friday.

on HULU DR goes to a college on one of the episodes of his show. He talks to students about living in the dorms vs off campus. Not eating out and working part time to pay as much of your tuition as you can. Plus grants

Thanks ladies, this bfp has been 2 years in the making.  I saw my superintendent of schools and I got verbal confirmation that if they are not able to find me a job, I will get 3 months termination pay. She is so excited for me. I didn't tell her I was pregnant yet. I told her things were looking good, but I want to have my blood test first.

ILoveMyBabyBird, I think DR encourages a no debt lifestyle even with education. Sometimes I think that educational debt, within reason - using a community college and public university with a clear plan of what classes you will take so you can graduate as quickly as possible - is the best way.  This is coming from a woman who is 12 years out of college and still 4 years away from paying off her school loans.

Yay Lilac! So happy for you smile.gif

I'm just plugging along here. Saving a little here and a little there. I just had some car repairs done, so my car should last me another couple years, and this summer will be busy at work, so I'm hoping to bank all the "extra" money.

Oh man it has been a while since I have posted...been busy being pregnant and junk.

We finished our DR class, got our car paid off earlier this month joy.gif, made our last CC payment, and now are debt free except for our house! Super excited. We also got to write a $100 check to church on Easter and gave $100 to friends of ours in need whose 9 month old just had to have major heart surgery so we are feeling good. Now we are just awaiting the arrival of our new LO.

BaileyB, that is awesome!  Hope your little one arrives just on time!

AFM, had a positive blood hcg pregnancy test yesterday and I am starting to feel like this pregnancy is going to stick around. Now to cash flow through the last of the medical bills from the procedure - blood test here, ultrasound there, freezing fee here, etc. I feel so blessed that we didn't have to go into debt for our IVF, even though it has slowed down our debt snowball. Next month we should be able to get back on it full force though. Really close to paying off another credit card.

I got an email for a job interview as a payment assistance worker for the State of Michigan. I would be to help people get connected with programs like food stamps, housing assistance, etc and help them learn to budget and handle their finances.  I am waiting for a time and date for the interview but I am pretty pumped about it.

Sounds cool!

I got put back on disability today till at least May 5th. My doctor wants me to have surgery for a herniated disc I've been suffering with since 2009. I'm pretty sure this disqualifies me for the house but honestly I'm not sure I even want it anymore. All four bathrooms have some degree of water damage and I'm really going to struggle to pay the mortgage so forget about repairs. I think I should have snowballed the debt before trying for the house.

trekkingirl, sorry to hear that possible change in direction. I know having a home for you and your family has been particularly important to you. I hope all goes well as you get read for surgery.

AFM, I got the call yesterday that my interview will be on Tuesday, April 23. It is also the day I go to see my reproductive endocrinologist to determine if I am carrying one or two babies. It will be a wild day.

trekkingirl - I was hoping that this was the house for you but I can see why it may not be so. Sorry about your back - making the decision to have surgery is never easy. Hugs

lilac - Exciting! I will keep my fingers crossed for you for a new job and an ultrasound that shows one (or two) healthy little beans.

I too have an interview for a job on 4/23 (I also have one on Monday 4/22). We made the decision to go forward with paying for the private high school for our son. It was a big leap of faith as the jobs are not coming fast and furious at me. LOL. I am encouraged though by the two upcoming interviews and hopefully one or both will lead to more work for me. (I have to bring in more income to keep us out of MORE debt)

Well, exciting news yesterday.  My DH and I are having twins!  Yep!  Both embryos are growing and I am humbled to be the mama-to-be of two humans.

Yesterday I had an interview, I am not sure I will be the best person for the job, but I could enjoy it.

Now that we know we are having twins, we have to do some decision making about what next.  Diapers alone - if we go with disposables - are crazy expensive.  I would love to cloth diaper but keeping up with 2 times the diapers?  I am not sure I can do that. Two cribs, two car seats, those are the big things that I know I need to have. I think there is a lot of baby stuff that is unnecessary.  Something to keep them warm and dry.  I plan to breast feed so no need to get formula - I was at the drug store the other day and formula is behind lock and key because it is so expensive, doesn't even last a week for a container, and since I am having 2 babies - that would be insane. I have a friend that exclusively breast fed her identical twin boys.  I can do it!  I might be the all day buffet but I can do it.

Then there is the "do I take a job, do I not take a job".  With twins, the amount for daycare would likely wipe my paycheck away. These are exciting times!
