Exactly! Someone still has to do it, should those people live in poverty? No! They often work a lot harder then someone who wears a suit to work yet are paid pennies when you compare salaries.

Of course those people work hard and don't deserve to live in poverty, but in reality, they often do. So steering your own kids a different direction still, unfortunately, makes sense.

OP, I don't know if this will work for you, but one way I have gained a bit of extra income is teaching classes to senior citizens.  My area has a Lifelong Learning program affiliated with a local university.  I simply called them and offered to teach.  I am a graduate student and I teach Drama and Literature courses, however there are other teachers who teach all kinds of things, from sailing to gardening, etc.  The baby boomer generation are overall very active and engaged and willing to pay for interesting classes.  I get to pick a convenient time to schedule my class, and I have enjoyed it a great deal.  So if you have a teachable skill, it might be something to look into.
