Ack! I'm way behind here. I can't remember all my spending, but I know I spent a little each day. Groceries, mostly, though I did splurge on a cheap dinner for myself one of the nights when both DH and the kids were out. Hopefully today will be a good day, because I really need one!

Last night we picked up burritos for dinner....not in my eating plan & not in my budget, but one less sink full of dishes to do! We did good all month & didn't eat out at all until now. I think at the end of the month when I go over budget I have a tendency to throw up my hands. Ok, will try to do one grocery trip this week & buy nothing else!

Spent the past 2 days with my daughter at a science meet.  We had a ton of fun, bought a lot of food.  I packed us lunches for the first day, but covered other meals while we were there.

Going to pick up groceries today.

Jan. 16: :o Light bill payment and a little grocery spend.

Jan. 17: :o $10.85

Jan. 18: :( $7.06  ($3.21 was on mcdonald's since I forgot to bring dinner to work :( Not good)

Jan. 19: :wink

Jan. 20: :o $8.11

Jan. 21: :wink

Jan. 22: :o Propane bottle refill.

Jan. 23: :( Lunch out while running errands

Jan. 24: :( Ate out again today since we were out of town for the doc. Also went thrift shopping and bought a couple of cheap items to make my living room better - sheets to cover the couch, curtains to partition off to save on heating, and a couple of cheap throw pillows to match it all.

Jan. 25 :wink

Jan. 26 :(

Today wasn't all bad but we still bought some drinks and snacks out that weren't necessary. The rest was necessary spending today so yay! Not too bad for a day with dh home. I know we're leaving the house tomorrow so I'm hoping we don't do too bad then.

Thankfully, a no-spend. Today looks to be quiet too--I have all the ingredients I need for crockpot stew for dinner, and the only errand I need to run is to pay for an art class, which is budgeted spending. DD11 does want to go to B&N to use a gift card she has, but I don't have too much trouble not spending there. I love our library too much :thumb

Oh! Speaking of the library, while we're out, I can run by and drop off some books BEFORE they go overdue!

That's it for me this month.  I am out of money.  The van has gas, we have enough food, our bills are paid, I paid off Christmas, and there is nothing left.  So, it should be a week of no spends till we get paid on Friday.

We had a few budget overruns this month -- a couple of family trips, some vitamins that I needed (and wow!  I feel better) and I overspent on food by $200 which is a lot.  I really need to do better with our grocery budget.  I think I am going to start a big excel sheet to track groceries.  I'll start doing that in February.

Argh!!! The Pamela's baking mix bundle I normally buy on Amazon is down from its normal price by $5 right now. Is that a good enough reason to blow a no-spend day?

Decisions, decisions...

Totally unexpected spending today but since it wasn't for frivolous reasons I'm counting it as budgeted/necessary. We have a winter storm coming in!!! Given that I live deep deep deep in the south that's a crazy thing. Just to be sure we're covered we picked up some extra propane and needed things in case we're out of power for a few days. I guess if nothing else this should keep us on lockdown so we can accomplish no spend for the rest of the month... you know all four days of it LOL

January isn't taking any big hits, but I'm being terrible about little snack-y spending, although I haven't been extravagant with treats for myself.  No entire box of cookies snarfed, and I've been avoiding buying pop when we eat out, mostly.  Even the girls are fussing less about that.

Birthday spending has been reasonable.  Glad that season is over!

Well, I put it off yesterday, and the price is still low today, so I'm going to do it. The three bags last me 3-4 months at least, and I'm spending on dinner with friends tonight anyway, so at least I salvaged the no-spend day yesterday--in name, if not in principle!

LOL good deal! Well we are definitely having a no spend day here today unless I get online and buy something since we are stranded at the house for the weather. I'll post after the day is over though since you never know. We do have a possibility of losing electricity at some point depending on how the weather goes though so if I don't come back that's why. I'm hoping for a no-spend the rest of this week.

Just checking in.  No spending here.  Unless I use a credit card, I am out of spending money.  Two of my four kids are home with the flu, so we are taking it easy and watching a lot of Netflix.  It sounds awful when I write it out, but this has been an easy and comforting week.  Lots of tea and cuddles today.

I did a big grocery shopping trip yesterday because I needed to go to Whole Foods for some things for a party on Sunday, and I try never to waste a trip there since I rarely go in that direction. I made a two-week meal plan and shopped based on that. I'm also trying to buy mainly fruit and veggies as snacks now, and that seems to cost so much more, especially in the middle of winter. I still need to buy a few things at BJ's to finish off my meal plan ingredients, and I'm going to try to do that tonight. I think I'm going to allocate a big chunk of this spending to February's groceries.

Last day of the month!  We got paid this morning and dh got a 3% raise!  Nice.  It is not much, but every little bit is helpful and it is very reassuring to see him get a cost of living raise.  He hasn't had one in 5 or 6 years.

I took our poor cat to the vet this morning.  She is covered in scabs and has lost a lot of her hair.  Turns out to be fleas.  I haven't seen any, the vet couldn't find any evidence, but she is sure that's what it is.  I am behind on our flea treatments, so it is possible.  She got a steroid shot and I ordered more flea treatments and I hope the poor thing feels better soon.   $95, boo hoo.

And I am picking up some vacuum bags.  I have been reusing the same one for months, just emptying it out every so often.  With the flea issue, I think I need to vacuum and toss the bags for a month till our cat feels better and there is no more chance we have them.  Gah!  I hate fleas.

So, end of the month.   Not bad overall.   I did well enough, but could do better.   We owe quite a bit in taxes this year due to the job change.  We have our withholdings adjusted properly now, but it was 8 months before we figured it out.  I can pay it all in February, but it will make for a very tight month.  Pfffft.  Another tight month...

That's a big theme here, too. We eat a ton of fruits and vegetables! I should put that expense under health insurance  :treehugger

So, I didn't really accomplish my goals this month, but I would say we made progress - stayed within the grocery budget, but did not reduce it; only ate out a few times at low-cost places or where we had gift cards; were thoughtful about spending for kids (they paid for their fun stuff with allowance money; we paid for essentials); all in all, we were more mindful about spending.

As I said before, I really thought that I could get away with spending very little.  Ha!  The majority of what I spent was for social obligations (Christmas, birthday parties, baby showers) so I don't feel too bad about that.  As I move forward each month I will keep a list of things I want (but don't have to have).  I will buy what is still on my list at the beginning of the month and then start a new list.  This way I have time to really think about the purchases - no impulse buying.  I am trying to keep in the back of my mind what I want to have money for in the future (organic food, college for my dds, traveling).  Every little bit I spend frivolously takes away from these more important things.

This has been a great exercise for me.  I wish everyone luck!

I've been reading this thread off and on and I've decided to track our spending.  We are a family of 6, one income, with no debt other than a mortgage.  We are planning to take on some debt starting in about 6 months for about 2 years.  My spouse is undergoing a job change and our income is being reduced by 80% for 18-24 months. It will then go up, but not to where it is now, for another 5 years or so after that.  We've planned ahead by paying off all the kids orthodontia bills (saved 10% paying up front in cash).

This past week's expenses:

Groceries-358.72  (not a typical week.  varies greatly from week to week)

chicken feed and wood shaving- $65

toothpaste/brush-$5 (realized I left the house without brushing after a rough morning getting kids out of the house! I couldn't go all day without brushing!)

Birthday party gifts for parties my kids were attending- $115 (5 gifts)

Pizza- $11

Medical- $132.13   (acupuncturist ($20 copay) and had a follow up appt with the surgeon about my foot ($40).  Two kids saw the pedi ($40) and both had strep throat (Rx 32.13)

I'm tracking all spending for Feb and then I'll look at ways to make changes in March.  I'm looking forward to paying attention and seeing how other families work their finances.

Me.  With 1 spouse, 4 kids, 16 chickens, 74 matchbox cars, 968,562+ legos, a dishwasher waiting to be emptied, a washing machine waiting to be filled and a lost cup of tea in the house.
