It's definitely true

Needs and wants are relative. I think for the most part, we live frugally and live in many ways, well well well below what others would consider "normal". We do spend a lot on restaurant food, part of this is proximity to it, part of it is health issues (I don't like cooking when I've got a migraine), part of it is it's our treat as we never take vacations (although I realize saving could lead to a better chance of having one). When I read about people in the Globe and Mail financial sections whining about how they are struggling with $200 000/$300 000 incomes it makes me guffaw/want to scream out loud. But obviously, they do feel pinched, they probably adjust their "normal" spending up to meet their income level (as I think many people do). My husband cleaned out the pantry and found THREE almond extracts geesh. That is something that for sure, would be good to curb. Waste may be one our achilles heels, between catering to different tastes, my ADD/migraines, kid cherry picking foods, and being the usual (until now) holiday host/provisioner for get togethers (cottaging, camping). We are also awash in "family" stuff as we were the only stable people around to receive it, family photos, vases, baby blankies (dating back to who knows what century), cookbooks which makes it hard to stay organized. We had 2 cans of cranberry which we never eat because, I suspect, we inherited them LOL. I am a neurotic worrier too, perhaps no wonder for certain times when we get close to the edge of the abyss of no income/health problems, but other times it's crazy, as things inevitably seem to work out, even if not as we foresaw it. I read the autobiography of Jim Bakker (a very long time ago) and it was funny how he would say he would sent his wants out into the universe and "god" would provide (I love camp stuff what can I say LOL). Sometimes it does seem true as I will be wanting/needing something and Lo and behold, there it is at the thrift store or on the curb in mint condition, it probably has something to do with living in such a large city.

We live in a very high cost of living area. Sometimes I feel like I'm spinning my wheels. Thread or no thread I am trying to spend less! I am NOT doing it for anyone but myself. I am happy to have ladies to report to.

I have always tried very hard not to spend where I can get away with it. We have almost no debt. We drive old cars. We go to the lowest cost food market. (out of the way by 20 mins) Gas price went up so I drive less. I'm not sure what else I can cut. So, I'm trying not to spend even more.

Zebra - You have to live life. If that means spending a little that is OK in my book.

Family came to town, and we enjoyed the pizza playground. It wasn't planned, but there we are. $60
We found a house that we wanted to look at, and fell mostly in love with. I have been working on prepping the house we are in to hit the market in the last week of May, so it's a bit premature to be putting in an offer. After a few excited conversations, our jets cooled and we could bring our focus back to keeping to the schedule. If this house is the one, it just may be waiting for us this summer. This perceived shortage and buying panic is behavior that I have all too often fell for. Sometimes its for $$$ more often it's just like $$. This thread is helping me to practice a new habit! Yay for "no spend"!

Day 72 - Big snow storm coming. So, I did go to the store and grab a few extras just in case we end up stuck here. We had zero electricity for 2 weeks after Sandy. So I learned a lesson!

Spent $25 on a few extra batteries & candles & other little things like that...

Haven't posted since March 5th.

Since then the only discretionary purchases I've made have been a $20 annual voluntary subscription fee I pay to IMSLP (the music library service I use for my string music education program), a chocolate bar I bought in lieu of dinner while on the run from a community event back to where I had left dd, and $88 in new undergarments (sports bras and briefs) since I am doing less laundry and need a few more items to cycle through between washloads.

I am gradually selling a few items on our local version of Craigslist. I consider the proceeds of these sales to be mad money. Not sure why, but I figure it's fair game to tuck that money away for something I just want ... in my case, a new bike. At this rate it's going to take years, but whatever.

Spent $20 on a used desk today. Spare bedroom now has two pieces of furniture. Hoping for as good a deal on a bed and nightstand by mid-April, when we get a tenant.

Where did the time go?!

We just started a two week Spring Break, and I've had my head down working on a bunch of things. My littlest packed her own lunch the other day and told me, "this way I can eat on the way home and you don't have to spend money".

Today we will be purchasing landscaping rock to fix the drainage on the side yard, and get a new sump pump. $150

I really need to go grocery shopping too. Since I've been focused on project completion this last week, we've cleaned out the pantry some. This is good, but starts to taste monotonous.

Are you both still buried under the snow? Stay warm!

Day 78 - Bad day all the way around. Someone hit my car. So, a number of things were set into motion. Damage to the car is not to bad.

Maybe $50?? We will see...not today's bill.
Got sidetracked me from doing what I needed to do.
$30 spent today.

Sorry about that.

I had a bit of a relapse week with buying the kids lunch out twice, and thrifting. I guess the Spring break freedom went to my head! Unplanned spending: $95

As I sit here thinking about what to write, I've fallen down a rabbit hole of thought. So much philosophizing, introspection, criticism, justification about my actions. I'll spare you all today. Perhaps if I ever reach financial nirvana, I'll let you know. lol

Day 82 Did food prices go up? I went to the store. I stayed to the basic things that we get, nothing extra. BOOM! $20 more then normal. You might say that is nothing...to me that was a lot. I had $X to spend. Very weird.

So, $20 that came basically out of nowhere.

I'm no expert; but we are between Holiday food sales, so prices probably are a little higher.

Scored a free *almost new* twin mattress for my DD1. She's a sport and has been making due with a very.old.mattress. Yay for free!

I'm back- for friendship (the low income thread is dead).

I was feeling sick all week, sorta like asthma, sorta like a cough, kinda maybe a sinus infection- not sure what but not really 'enough' to go to the urgent care. Last night nothing was working and I gave up and hacked my way to the urgent care to be asked 'how long?'- eh.. the weekend. ' did you have a fever' ... nah, ever checked. Dr comes in, listens to the lungs, gives a breathing treatment and shot of steroids, comes back, more listening to lungs, sends for chest x-ray. The winner is Pnuenomia. Ugh, lovely. No wonder. 4-5 rx and a time line of 2 weeks. I've had this before so it can be anywhere from a few days to a few months. Today I realized how tired I get from simply breathing.

Stupid insurance (both of them) denied payment for 2 of the rx. seriously, who doesnt cover liquid abluterol and soemthign else for the breathing machine? Those are standard meds.

Im hoping tomorrow is better

Welcome back! Hope you feel better soon.

Our insurance stopped paying DH's much needed meds. $XXX for a 60 supply. What do you do. Thank you Obama!

I attended a sewing workshop today. I forgot my thread at home, so had to purchase that, and a few other things. Extra $13.50.
I packed my lunch though, so it feels like a wash.
I got to work on a project for 6 uninterrupted hours! On a brand new Bernina! and use new super sharp scissors! BLISS! (and a bit of machine envy). I have a new reason to save up. I really liked that sewing machine.
