I saw this segment on Good Morning America where their money reporter reminded everyone that every state controller holds onto money for people which may have been forgotten... forgotten checking accounts, savings accounts, stocks... they actually went to a woman's house who had money left to her from her parents but it wasn't listed in the will... she got $200,000.

anyway, I went to the link, I went to california and I plugged in everyone I know and my father in Law has about $500 owed to him. I printed it up and mailed it to him.

anyway, you should see if you have money owed to you!!

My sister did this last year, and she found a small ($67 or $76 or something) amount owed to me. I had checked it before and figured I wouldn't have anything. I found out, though, that the stat of MA has a reciprocirty agreement w/NY (where I live) and that they hold onto anything for 7 years hoping to find the owner, then they transfer it to the comptroller of the state where the person lived when the money was owed to them. So that is why I couldn't find it- it wasn't turned over to NYS (where I was looking) until a year or two ago.

It was really easy to get the money- I just filled out the paperwork and had a friend notarize it. I got the money a few weeks later. I still don't really know where it came from. I used to work for Friend;y's when I was a kid, and they were based out of Mass., so I think that is probably where it came from.

I did this a few years back and found some money for my grandma... from a bank account she held jointly with her mother, who died 40 years ago! It had been sitting there a long time... too bad it stops accruing interest after 7 years or so, so it was only a couple hundred.

Omigosh, Irmama, I thought you typed 5.17 MILLION....and then realised you meant mother in law. I was soooo happy for you for a split second.

Anyway, that's a great thing to have. I wish Canada had that too.

Is that the same thing where you have to pay $20 bucks to find out if it's actually under your name and not someone with the same name?

No. you don't pay for anything. You fill out the form, you might have to xerox off some ID to confirm it is you..(depends on each state)..but you don't pay anyone anything.
This is generated out the state controller's office.

I think I just found some money for my friend's mother. I am so weird.. I'm plugging in everyone...

hugs

LOL, I told one of them...well, I told his wife The second one I wouldn't know how to find to tell and if I did find him I'd tell him that he owes me 10 years worth of back child support so he should just hand it over to me, haha.

Thanks for the link Tracy. I checked and found an undisclosed amount for my father, but he doesn't believe me. Hopefully it is some crazy amount that he will then give to me.

I found 26.77 for my parents. It says that the claim may be denied if they can't prove they lived at the address but it has been twenty years since they lived there and I don't know if they'll bother trying to dig up those records for such a small amount.
