We don't drive a lot. We probaly drive about 30 km on an average week unless we have a lot of appointments or out of town visits, which is rare. I don't mind as a tank of gas lasts forever. We will probably eventually go car free, most likely when this car dies.
FIL is constantly blaming little things going wrong with our car on the fact we don't drive much. I think it's just because it's a 13 year old second hand car that is nearing the end of it's life, lol! Several times a week he'll mention that we need to drive more. He says we should probably drive about 10-20kms a few times a week to get the best usage and the longest life out of the car (hmmm, that's how far it is to their house..). I'm getting really frustrated and this week retorted back that we drive as much as we need to and we're not going to drive more so the car *might* work a little better.
IS there any basis to his claim that cars won't work well if you're not driving long distances every day? I only ever had problems with one other car and that was an old clunker too.
I think once a week should be fine. I have friends who have motor homes and they try to take it for a little spinonce aweel to keep everything oiled and greesie. I can't imagine a car would be different. It is all about the fluids and keeping them liquidy (?),that is why when you put a car up on blocks you are supposed to drain all the fluids out of it.
Anyways what you are doing for the environment is much better than what could happen to the car. Esp. because you don't want a new one when it dies. I would love to go car free... but So. California has horrible public transportation. .
