I have decided that for the month of January I'm not going to buy anything that is not food, body care, or cleaning products. Anyone want to join me? We can start a support group and talk about those great things we want to buy but will wait on.

I could probably join as right off hand I cant think of anything I will need to buy that is out of the catagorys you mentioned.

I do have a Christmas gift certificate (dh )that I will be spending on some decor for my bedroom does that count?

I am honestly thinking of joining you.

I would desperately need support : Especially if I included no eating out or coffee from the gas station.

Mama to 9 so far:Mother of Joey (20), Dominick (13), Abigail (11), Angelo (8), Mylee (6), Delainey (3), Colton (2) and Baby 8 and Baby 9 coming sometime in July 2013.   If evolution were true, mothers would have three arms!

we have a very tight winter budget in place as of this week that calls for NO EXTRAS (even food and body care-wise....so i started the no shampoo thing last week, and we are gunna eat out of the pantry and only get nessessities-like life or death NEEDS) luckily, i saw this coming and paid for co-ops and stuff last week...

i have some stuff for ebay, so that will help, but i was hoping to drive to florida in january (VERY cheap vacation as we could stay with my sister, who is dying to see the new baby) but dont even think the few hundred dollars for gas and food will be squeezed free

This sounds like fun, but I don't think I can do it. My DH's birthday is in January, so I'll be getting him something that I already have chosen out. And we HAVE to get another car. We can't afford our car payment and my BIL works with a guy who has a car he's willing to sell us for $300. We can't afford to pass that up. Not sure HOW we'll do it, but we have too.

Other than that though I'm really hoping to not spend any money on things that are necessities.

Cool! Glad to have the support!

My exception will be to buy new walking shoes b/c the old ones are hurting my back and knees. I got them 3 years ago. My dad already gave me $ to buy them so that won't count as money spent. But that's it.

Great Idea!

I don't think I'll join you (we'll be spending some Christmas $ and DD's birthday is in January) but it is certainly something to think about.

Thanks

So glad I saw this after I bought a little yarn with my Christmas gift money from my ILs.

So would it break the challenge to buy the things I need to go to a friend's mother blessing this week? What about buying things to make the gifts I need to make for the 4 birthdays in Feb?

Mom of a 7 yr old, 4 yr old, and 1 yr old. Wow. How did that happen?

I'm in too...this week is our "eat from the pantry and freezer and frig" week after all the xmas spending. I will buy some knitting needles tommorow to finish a project without all my stitches ending up on the floor (I'm using metal now and I'm not good enough to fix them if they do fall off ). We did spend our Marshalls gift card today but bought only stuff we would need to buy anyways such as a saucepan (with a handle,we've been using ours with the handle off which was ok until our 10 year old started cooking)some sheets, a new cooking knife and a bra for me. Looking forward to the support from all of you!!

I would think that this would not count b/c it's a social obligation. I'm talking more about those little things we all buy that we don't really need. I'm bad about buying the kids treats and cheap toys and games, and I'm really bad about going thrift shopping and buying stuff we don't need. I end up re-donating it after a few mos.

I think that this is a good month for me to join in. I even need to cut way back on the groceries etc so that we can get some money built up. Thankfully the car is paid off, but my van took a poo on us the day before Christmas eve and we had to borrow money from MIL to get a new one but we aer hopeing to get enough from tax return to pay that off.

December has been a rough month, I literally feel like I'm bleeding money.

There was a rocking horse on sale at the store today. I really wanted to buy it b/c it was half off Christmas clearance. Nitara loves one that's at a friend's house, but I didn't buy it. That was hard! We just don't need any more toys.

That is so hard- gosh darn sales! But with the inflow of stuff, stuff, stuff I just keep telling myself that we do not need anything right now. Darn Hanna Anderson sale flier! :

I want to eat up the pantry and freezer this month, too. Also, cut back on the food bill a bit. Like not buy beer. A little thing, but I'll miss it.

Hehehe... I'm glad it's not January yet. The after Christmas sales are pretty much the only way we can get any decorations and things like that. But I still didn't spend actually money. We had some gifts we got from DH's family that we returned and I used the store credit to get some lights and a tree topper. So, I spent without spending money. That's my favorite way ~laughs~

Now, once January actually gets here I'm going to buckle down even more. This will be really hard. DD always asks for things in every store. Literally EVERY store. We were at a feed store buying straw and she found something to ask for ~sighs~

I'm there, baby! My dh on the other hand...sigh....He just doesn't get it. Starbucks here, starbucks there, lunch out lunch out lunch out.....ok..I'm depressed now. I love the challenge of eating only from the pantry/freezer. It gets to be a sorta weird game with me as supplies dwindle.

Subbing,
I do have to get a birthday gift for my Niece, and Hanukah present fror my Mom (they spend way too much on us and I feel guilty). But those will all happen before January 1 (and with a GC that I got from my uncle). After that I'm gonna be here learning. I just put myself on an allowance today that will make things very tight, but will hopefully help us pay off debt.

Yeah, that's us here too. Of course, I work from home and barely leave the house, so it's easier for me to always have something handy . I think I can probably get him onboard though. He likes a challenge. Of course, we'll see how much he likes it when I refuse to go grocery shopping My DD will be a tough nut to to crack too.

I guess I'd better get out and get that new toaster oven before January starts then--we're in dire straits without ours, we use it for so much!

Looking forward to this, thanks for the idea.

Okay so in the few days left before January, is everyone going to have a free for all before the no spending month starts? Or are you trying to get into the spirit now?

Dh suggested writing down everything I wanted to buy but didn't, and I can review it at the end of the month and decide which of those I *really* wanted and which were just impulse buys.

My dh is a real tightwad. I wish I was like him. I grew up with very little funds. I'm talking always hand me down clothes, no extras, no big family vacations or anything like that. So I got into the habit after I started working on my own, to buy nice things for myself. Now it's hard to not buy for the kids because their little faces light up.

We are starting to get in the spirit now, really hard because one of our bathrooms in currently torn up, but we are going to try to be conservative.

I didn't spend much at the mall today ( I bought only what I went in there, and a snack to keep the kids happy). It was really hard with all the sales, so much stuff we could have used but I said NO

I have 3 "must spends" in January that aren't food or gas, one is a birthday lunch, another is a "cooking evening" where I make 6 meals that will actually feed us for 12 and our hands on science center pass is up. But I'm going to be good, really.

Oh and I need help with the "only 2 dollars thing" actually mine is less than 20

LOL! I'm definitely not doing a free-for-all. We just really need that toaster oven, we use it soooo much. Our oven is ancient and the temp is almost 75 degrees off, plus it takes forever to heat up--it's a gigantic gas hog. And actually, we have a Target gift card to use for that anyway, so technically it's "free"!

My own personal challenge will be the grocery thing. I have a ton of food stored up, but it always seems like we have a million side dishes and no entrees. I need to be more creative, and also dig deep in our chest freezer to start cleaning it out. I also need to teach my DH to just say NO when he's craving a Dunkin' Donuts fix

I've pretty much been in the spirit my whole life. My father used to call me "Old Moneybags" when I was little because I was always a money hoarder. I hate spending money. But somehow we always end up buying things that we don't really need. Not many, but enough that it bothers me. I guess even one thing we didn't really need would bother me.

But I'll be extra aware in January!
