Ok so I thought I needed a new oven. The old one did not bake right.

Gosh...300$. Dh talked about getting a new one for me for xmas. Glad that did not pan out.

So I did some troubleshooting and figured out that the gasket on the oven door was bad.

Found one online for $40 (the oven is old and it was discontinued). Picked up some new reflector plates ($12 for all four) and voila! For a total of $52 I have what looks and feels like a new oven!

Next I am going to tackle the fridge. It needs a new door panel. When we moved in, all of the shelves were broken in it. That will be more expensive but it is nice to know that I am in a sense recycling my old appliances by replacing the broken parts rather than the whole thing.

Ok so that was my pat on the arse for today.

How have you saved money on what you thought was going to need to be replaced? I want to keep on keepin on with this refurbish what I have attitude.

See if you can locate an appliance recycling place around you. I have bought refrigerator shelves (no longer available from mnfr and would have to be made by a glass shop) for $5. Got frig bins and cams for the self-closing door mechanism that I fixed myself, etc. Also bought a new upright freezer (Kenmore) with a one year warranty (parts and labor) that we have had for 1-1/2 years and love. It was $125 - under $160 with tax and deliver, I think. Also bought a used 2yr old frig that was around $400 (also w/1yr P&L warranty). They hauled away the old one, too. I had been fixing it, but it did finally need to be recycled - and using $15 less in electric each month now. They have everything there.
