July 16th*Nothing!

But I will be going back to work the end of this month so once I actually have income again this will be much harder for me.

Gearing up for August!

Welcome honeydee!

Leaving my money at home yesterday worked so well that I'm going to try that again today.

If I had had money, we would have most definitely stopped for take-out lunch yesterday because we were hot and tired and hungry when we were driving around. But we came home and ate at home.

Today we'll be having that same temptation.

Hi Mamas!

I first off want to say thank you! You ladies have inspired me to quit spending.

My name is Eryn and I am married to Bryan and we have an amazing 10 year old boy Isaiah. I am a huge shopoholic and came to the realization not to long ago. We currently live in Colorado Springs but want to move back to WA next year to be close to family. But we need to pay off tons of my shopping bills. This past week I have been going through all my stuff and selling a lot on Craigslist.

I have been lurking for about a month and a half and thought I should just join! I can't wait to get to know you ladies!

Try my recipe for Faux Starbucks! Seriously, a while back, a lot of us were on a Starbucks kick, and this recipe has helped me save money this month.

Faux Starbucks

1 lb coffee
10 cups water

Put in pitcher and sit on your counter at least 12 hours. Strain coffee grounds out with cheesecloth into pitcher. Put in fridge. Chill.

In tall cup with ice, add 1/3 water, 1/3 coffee concentrate, 1/3 vanilla dairy creamer (and a little milk if you want). I use a martini shaker to combine, but you could just use a spoon or a swizzle stick. SO GOOD!! We had a caramel macchiato from Starbucks and this is very close minus the caramel syrup but you could add that over the top but I don't think it needs it. You can find flavored syrups at Target. You can also add a little whipped cream on the top, but I haven't been doing that.

You can make about 6 of them for the cost of one at Starbucks.

If you try it, let me know how you like it!

hi hi hi
1. Please introduce yourself and tell us anything you think it would help us to know about yourself.

Hey! I'm Nay, mom to Little Guy & Baby Girl. I've been on MDC for a while, but not sure I've ventured into this forum.

2. Please tell us why you have decided to spend nothing (or spend significantly less) for the Month of July. Memorize these goals and recite them to yourself before all purchases.

A) Need to pay $200 on a previous purchase.
B) Need an unpadded ring sling.
C) I don't need all I the stuff I buy. A lot of it just sits around the house unused.
D) All the junk food I buy makes it hard to get in shape.

3. No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?

A) Eat at home. --ditto!
B) Don't shop for recreation. --ditto!
C) Go grocery shopping on weekends so Little Guy doesn't come along and add $5 to each trip.
D) Stay out of Barnes & Nobel, Borders, and the local camera store.
E) Only 2, at the very most--and ideally fewer--trips to the coffee shop per week. Trust me, that'll save a lot of money :

Today I'm going out to get milk, cat food, and litter. And that's it! I will pack some snacks to give Little Guy when he starts asking for checkout toys & candy.

Welcome Nay!

Today's spending: $11 and change for lunch with an MDC mama who's new to town--more than I anticipated, but totally worth it. She rocks and her kids are just beautiful. I"m looking forward to getting to know her better. Yay for new friends!

Tonight, $90 for therapy.

Thanks for the welcome, Frog!

I get $20 a week of "mad money" that is 100% mine to spend as I wish. Unfortunately, it's gonna take a long time to pay that $200 off. Today I spent $5 of my $20 on some kids who are raising money for the local hospital. A real life lemonade stand . How could I say no to that?

mom2Joseph my book club is about to read Unconditional parenting and I have read the Continum in the past. I had to order them from the library and it will take weeks but it saved some money.
I've heard that alibris.com is really cheap and very fast for used or like new books.

No spending today. Drove to the beach with the kids and then turned around and went all the way back to get our water and then went right back out. Saved money and felt rewarding.

What is with all the sales? Don't they seem better than usual? It must be the diet effect. You deny yourself and then all of sudden they are everywhere and so good too. I just keep telling myself. All those good deals will be junk in my closet next summer. It so hard though. You think you need things.
I have a picture in my office of a malnurshed little baby from Africa and it has been giving me strength and reminding me to be humble and grateful for what I have. I don't need those sale things...I really don't.

Well, the vet bill was less than I thought it would be -- $86. Not bad for an office visit and 2 prescriptions and a washing solution. Poor girl ripped the pads off her paws . She's doing much better now though.

for today.

Tomorrow I need to get a few essentials at Target, must make and stick to list! That should be the only spending, I have an appt with my mw and a dr appt after, so my afternoon will be busy.

Welcome to the new no spenders!

July 5:

July 6: weekly groceries:$78.65,weekly lunch out:$26.09
impulse mudslide fixins:$26.47

July 7:
thrift crockpot and canning jars:$9.96
July 8:
July 9:
July 10: DD asked to stop in and see DP on way home from swimming lesson. Tugged at my heartstrings, as well as my pursestrings b/c we hadn't eaten and didn't have anything with us. We had lunch with DP. $8.83

July 11: $10.60 well-fitting goggles for DD's swimming class
July 12:
July 13: $99 grocery, $25weekly sushi lunch w/family
July 14: $7.87 printed up fliers for this month's Critical Mass ride, $2.56 stickers for DD
July 15:
July 16:
July 17: DP got $ necessary hardware for our oak rain barrel

July Totals:
good:$238.70
not so good:$46.23
compacting:still no dings

The stickers for DD are kinda pinkish green. We have a limited amount of spending money but it was only $2. Whenever we go to the office supply store her picking out one set of stickers is a tradition. It can technically fall under craft. And honestly I have a really hard time dragging my daughter around in and out of stores to spend money in ways I want without giving her an opportunity to have some say. So I can live with this.

The critical mass fliers aren't something we planned for but they are important to me and for a good cause. So I can live with that, too.

I'm really liking having all this cash in my wallet, btw. (I should take it out!) By buying/packing up fresh fruit for DD for after swimming class I've saved $$$$$$ and we're all healthier. Yay for creative, positive solutions!

Hi, I'm in! I've noticed in the last two or three months that while it doesn't feel as if our spending is increasing, our costs are increasing. Our budget is pretty detailed so I know where our money is going, I'm just not clear on why our spending has increased so much. It's really been shocking. Fortunately our income has also increased so we're doing fine. But I'd like to see what I can do for the rest of July to spend little or nothing. I have plenty of food in the house, and maybe one or two trips to the Farmer's Market should tide me over for anything I need.

OK enough blah blah blah, I'm subbing and will check in with details as the days go by. Starting tomorrow. Tonight I figured up the budget so far, wrote a bunch of checks for bills, and then found this thread. :

It's only around 10:00AM here, but I just spent $90 for complimentary healing sessions using TAT and Reiki. I know they'll help me feel better, but I always feel guilty for spending money, even when it's necessary like this. The up side is that it's $30/hour, when the average is $50 or more per modality. So I'm getting 3 sessions using 2 modalities, for less than the price of one session of each. Kind of helps me put it into perspective, but it still wasn't budgeted.
