There are 11 days left in the month of July.

For me, every single will be a huge victory.

I'm going to try my ~hardest~ to get 8 more (I know 11 more is not realistic because my MIL is coming for a visit and we'll be doing stuff with her). But 8 is a reasonable goal for me to aim for.

Prudence's goals for the rest of July:

1. No more diaper shopping. 0/11
2. No McDonald's. 0/11
3. No spend days. 0/8

Hmmm...too negative.

Let me reword those goals so they reflect the positive spirit of financial freedom that those goals will reward me:

My goals for the rest of July:

1. Gaining control over my diaper-buying addiction: 0/11 days
2. Evading the fast-food demon: 0/11 days
3. Keeping my money in my pocket: 0/8 days

The less money you have, the less you spend! Since our rent alone is more than half our monthly income, we really can't spend anymore than we absolutely have to. But I like to keep track here, just to see where it goes.

July 20 ( did have to buy mothering mag off newsstand b/c mine wasn't forwarded when we moved but that counts as in budget )

I had to use the dryer 2 loads this week b/c it is so humid and rainy the clothes won't dry. Free festivals and parades all weekend. I will be sure to pack a cooler with snacks and H2O.

I'm sending DH out of the house this morning with the girls so I can get our house cleaned and the yard mowed.

That won't cost a thing!

So hopefully I can get my first of my 8 thumbs.

BeachlivinMom -- All those festivals and parades sound like great fun.

Oy, I can't even find my last post.

I've been doing okay. I bought lunch in the food court today. I hadn't spent for the last coupledays though. HOWEVER, I justified the food court meal with the fact that I'm working an overtime shift today.

7/21 - $5 on lunch

Okay, so yesterday, I got to see Ina Mae Gaskin speak here in Chicago!!! I "splurged" on the tickets but the $'s going to a local midwifery org. Awesome!! But I ended up having to spend $23 on a taxi home. Long story but it had to be done. Still sucked.
Today, spent $9 over my farmer's market budget but made LOTS of great, healthy food!
Getting good at packing snacks for outings and leaving cash at home to avoid spending on popsicles and mangos from the Mexican street vendors!!!
Prudence: Thanks for the reminder that there's only 11 days left in July! I'm already looking forward to August to see how much better I can do now that I know what to expect and have some tricks up my sleeve!

July 21 0 Made $100. at our yard sale. Enough to pay our electric bill. Which is higher than normal because we have tenants living in a small apt under our house. My daughter earned $10. selling cupcakes and lemonade at the yard sale (thats $10. profit after the cost of supplies) She is going to set a little aside in savings (however much she wants and then after her dentist apt on Wednesday she is giong to buy herself someting with her own money. I offered to take her to a water park instead and she is thinking about it. It occured to me that spending her money on a thing..a toy.. is encouraging the habit of buying stuff for yourself for a treat instead of doing something for yourself for a treat. So if she would rather spend her money on admissions to a kids water park or to the children's musuem then we will do that instead.

I have some things to sell on ebay and craigslist leftover from the yard sale. I want to try to finish that this month.

i got so behind and have had to order meat & undies--i'm not even sure where all of my receipts are. last week i came home from the grocery store and saw we still had about the produce i just bought. i hadn't checked because i "knew" what we had. : went to ebay today, but i closed the window without bidding so...i'm trackin' y'all down! (plus, my father's giving me great financial contrast --i'm going to open a retirement account this month if it's the last thing i do (i may not contribute frequently, i want to pay down debt first, but at least it will be ready).

frugal progress:

no a/c, using fans (rededicated after $10 increase in electric bill due to HHH wave
hang/rack dry as much as possible
stay away from ebay!

how does this work? I need to cut spending to pay for the children's medical because their insurance was just cancelled, what do you mean no spending?

Ok, my name is Shelly, dh and I have five children, three cats and a dog. Our oldest child is starting college and didn't get approved for pell grants because dh makes too much. We have no college funds. Our children's state ins was just cancelled. I think I can cancel the counseling, but I need to cut spending to fund

four cavitiy fillings
dd every three weeks to the opthomologist
dd to see a nutritionist
the kids to continue with the allergist if possible
paying for prescriptions

Read the first few thread posts> It's not really no spending at all, but no unnecessary spending, just bills and food and any other needs. You can save money this way, and track your spending. That's why we report every day, listing what we've spent money for.

This has really been great for my Dh and I this month. We have saved every receipt and plan to go over it item by item at the end of the month.

This month continues to be very hard for me and I haven't been able to keep up with all the posts. All I can say is, everything has taken a backseat to not continuing the cycle of abuse in our family. I'm trying so hard. Doing the best I can. Taking it day by day. I will say still, there has been no spanking.

BREADMAKER - As you know, I didn't buy one and even made a loaf myself, by hand and it was great. I have now made 4 more loaves and family members are begging me for more!! I'm baking as much as I can. DS is helping me and we are just loving that time together. It has become very theraputic.

Today:

Line dry
CD
cook from scratch
stay calm!!!

Will be glad when this month is done as our pool pump has died, our stove is about dead and we need to order some HS materials!

Can I join? I'm a SAHM to two dc. I want to spend less, save more and be a much more aware consumer. My plan to achieve my spend less goal is to eat at home whenever possible (eating out is one of our downfalls) and spend a few days thinking about an unnecessary purchase before buying it.

I'll start with yesterday, since we didn't spend anything (much better for the psyche to start off on a good note):

July 22 My dh and dd wanted to go out to dinner. Haven't been to the store yet this week so we used a little grocery money and vowed not to go over the grocery budget this week. Dinner was terible. I was so bummed we spent our money on it. Had to send dd's meal back because it was under cooked. My Hot food was stone cold. I ate it anyway but couldn't enjoy being out and spending money on a lousy meal. What a waste. Ugh.

We always eat better at home anyway. Still no spending. Took pictures of a jogging stroller and my rocker to put on craigs list.

mom2joseph The book How To Talk so Kids will Listen and Listen so Kids will Talk is so excelent! I haver read it many times and really reccomend it. In fact my husband always gives one as a gift to his guy friends when they first become parents. One year he took 5 copies on a surf trip to Mexico to give to all the guys. Getting in on a workshop is really usefull too. If you don't have one in your area you can purchase supplies from the site and a kit on how to run your own workshop including the video presentations. I have a friend in PA who runs the workshop 3 times a year and makes a few hundred dollars each time. It is also something that you can sometimes get a grant for. If your not comforatble running it its possible that your local communtiy center, school or a local family counselor will do it.
Good luck.

Valerie, where are you that you can stand to make bread this time of year? It's so hot and humid here that any time I cook or even turn the oven on, the smoke detector goes off (it went off the other day while making waffles in the waffle maker!!). I've been doing a lot of micro cooking : or spending a lot of time fanning the smoke detector.

I had a no spend day yesterday. Of course it was Sunday and I don't spend $$ that day. It's been awful. Saturday would of been no spend but we were busy watching parades, fireworks and going to beaches and running around hoping to see the Tall Ships sail (we never did ). So we spent around $11 for me and the kids to pick supper up at McD's (DH was working, other wise it would of been double, lol!). I've probably had some other no spend days but I've been in a daze lately and can't remember. I'll probably go shopping today, but only for groceries, which are budgeted, so technically no-spend. I know come September things will be better. I'm going to try harder in August but it's so hard lately!!
