July 24 $0.

two more birthday party invitations came today. It really takes work and time to plan gifts that don't cost any money. We collected shells for one today.

July 1: $20 b-day gift, $35.76 gas
July 2:
July 3: $246.72 groceries (hopefully we can just pick-up produce/dairy for the rest of July), $29.99 new cell for DH, $4.60 postage, <$20.00> returned clothing
July 4:
July 5:
July 6: $21.90 groceries at Co-op
July 7:
July 8: Church offering, $20 gift for church pianist
July 9: $157.51 at Target ($12.65 = few snacky processed things; $144.86 )
July 10: $15 on local paper advertisement of land for sale
July 11: $44.99 gas
July 12: $39.68 groceries, $1.99 fish rocks, $71 oil change/headlight
July 13: $10 - 4 pints of PYO organic blueberries
July 14: Camping cabin, $17 takeout pizza/snacky food after left most of our camping food in the refrigerator back home, $2.50 ice cream social
July 15:
July 16:
July 17: $2 mylar balloons @ Dollar Store, one of which popped within a few hours (perhaps b/c 3yo DD was sitting on it), $3.22 McDonalds
July 18: $4.69 - bagel/snacks including purchased water - ugh, I hate buying water when I could have brought it!
July 19: Walked downtown this AM with the kiddos for breakfast, but it was healthy, planned, and within dining out budget, so not counting.
July 20: $126 on two Anna Street Studio handbags (was ridiculously unable to resist 40% off sale + too indecisive to choose just one - at least they are different sizes)
July 21: $15.76 on art supplies + $14.99 watch for DD - feeling guilty about working too much lately (largely from home, but still distracted)
July 22: $14.99 on pie for church picnic/pool party after DH + friends ate the carrot cake we planned to bring
July 23: (maybe, but might have spent something "bad" in cash that I cannot recall)
July 24: spent $ on groceries/supplies - grocery budget is WAY over for this month - was stocking up on some items, so not going to make this "bad", but also need to get back within budget

JULY TOTALS TO DATE:
"Good" (i.e. within budget + anticipated): Not tracking here (tracked in M/S Money); it's all good!
"Okay" (not in budget, but pretty necessary): $69.59
"Bad" (not in budget, not necessary): $211.30
"Fantastic" (items returned/sold): <$20.00>

Um, definitely seeing a correlation between working too much (which will continue until a big event concludes in August) and spending too much - feeling stressed, short on time, guilty for being distracted, and justified b/c I am earning more. Perhaps I can chase down that wagon in August...

Yesterday was not so good. Had to get gas, gave my daughter a "party" at Gattitown for using the potty all day, and DH found out his coworkers had decided to get a gift for someone going away, everyone was pitching in $20.

I'm really starting to get curious what a monthly total will look like when it comes around to Aug 12.

July 13 - $97.50 for health insurance, $6.16 for dh's life insurance
July 14 - $26.10 for food at Central Market at their live-music event (went with family). Used a gift card given to me to use at events such as this, so I think this is OK spending.
July 15 -
July 16 -
July 17 - $30 for registration for drop-in daycare for DD and 1 hour of care (credit card)
July 18 -
July 19 -
July 20 - $44.09 for groceries (on a gift card someone gave me)
July 21 - $18.54 for groceries (on a gift card someone gave me), $3.00 for drinking water (cash)
July 22 -
July 23 - $926.00 for rent, $26.52 for water bill
July 24 - $41.52 for gas, $25.13 for Gattiland, $20 for coworker's gift

Total since 7/13: $1264.56

We went to play tradional Hawaiian games. It was fun and free! They also gave out free shave ice and cotton candy, juice and H2o

Then I broke my camera. Best Buy said it would be about $150 to fix. Its a Kodak Easy Share. Do you think it is better to try to fix it or buy a cheaper new one?

How new is it? I'd look at Ebay and maybe see what they are selling for, and probably end up with a new one, because digital camera seem to get outdated fairly quickly. Wait...this is no spend...hmmm...I'd still check Ebay. If the camera new is selling for the same price or less, I wouldn't pay that much to get it fixed. Maybe put it towards a new one?

momlotusyoga freezing the cards in a block of ice is brilliant. I have mine in an envelope and was thinking of taking all of them (yes, I said all, we have several -not good) putting them in our safe deposit box and then just keeping one at the house. The one at the house could be put in the freezer like yours and then I couldn't just grab it on the way out the door. Thanks for the idea.

SusanItaly I'm jealious about the mixer. Congratulations. Have fun using it. My brother and his wife were given one 6 years ago and it is still in the box never opened. I'm tempted to offer to trade it for some babysitting. Is that rude to ask? He is family but I'm not sure.

July 25th $6.50 bought two things for the kids while away from home. One was a tub toy and the other was a teether for my son.

Made $63.99 on ebay this week. Yippee.

Still working on putting together baby shower gifts and birthday gifts for all the parties this weekend.

Had long $$$$$ talk with my dh late last night. made some tough choices. this morning he is back to wavering on some of the ideas.

My dd bought a toy with her lemonade stand money and really enjoyed having the freedom to pick out whatever she wanted.

beachlivinmom that totaly stinks about your camera. That happened to us with the video camera right before our ds was born. Once I sent one back and it was less to fix than they estimated. But for the video camera it sounded like it could be so much that we feared it wasn't worth it. So we gave it to a friend in NY city to take to a local camera shop there since he was sure he could get it fixed cheaper and the next time we saw him he was using it. He said he got it fixed for only $12.00! It just needed a simple part.
I know this doesn't help you much in making a decision. I guess I would try to look into each option out there and then way the costs.

Hi all, I'm still here. I bought two used books at the library (no fines, though!), that seemed like they'd be helpful, one being about children and divorce, but not necessary (I could check them out if need be). And I've used the dryer several times this week, after not having used it for months. I think I'm just getting tired.

But we're getting to use someone's pool daily while feeding her pets while she's away, so our summer fun continues to be FREE! I had a strong intention for that this summer, and it has just unfolded so beautifully. I took the kids on a day trip out in nature with friends the other day and packed all the food for the trip, so no McD's. I felt responsible, and I also felt the abundance of the universe.

Joining late, so I can get a head start before August. Here is our situation:

We moved from OC, CA to Austin TX in May. DH is on terminal leave from the Marine Corps and will get his last full paycheck on August 1st. He is in a 8 month police academy. His academy pay is $700+ every 2 weeks for a family of 4.

I am reallllly nervous because he doesn't graduate until January. He will get supplemental income from the GI Bill and disability from the VA, but I am not sure how long it will take to get that money.

We only have one credit card w/a balance. I was thinking about calling the credit card company and asking them to reduce the interest rate. Or I can transfer the balance to a different card to get 0% APR for 6 months.

We have 2 car payments, but I think the interest is pretty low and his truck will be paid off in December, so then we'll have one car payment. But we just bought a house and the first payment will be due around that time. I don't even want to think about the house payment, which is twice what our apt rent is. :

*I am a SAHM, so me getting a job isn't really an option right now. We'd eat up my income in childcare costs.
**We have money in savings, but don't want to touch it unless we absolutely have to.

No spending is hard work. You need a plan. Please tell us your game plan -- how do you plan to approach no spending for a month?
A) Eat at home. (DH takes his lunch to work every day and carpools!)
B) Don't shop for recreation. This is HUGE for me. I shop all the time. Big Lots, Tuesday Morning, Target, kids consignment stores. I have a shopping addiction. No lie.
C) Do instead of buy. We have a membership to the zoo and there are plenty of cool parks here to enjoy. Wednesday night is free at the museum, etc.
D) Use what I already have lying around the house. The kids have a ton of good toys (not junk!), games, books, and clothes. I could probably get away with not buying stuff for them until Christmas.
E) I am going to join a food ministry. Pay $25 for a box of food and supplement with additional boxes for $18 each. My biggest expense is food. Going conventional for a while will not kill me. I pay $4.00 for a box a cereal and $5+ for a gallon of organic milk. Insanity.

Please, please, please help me stay on track.

July 25-
July 26- $15.98 outfit for wedding in Sept.

Honestly, I could have worn something I already have, but it was on mad clearance and I had a coupon code. It's something I've had my eye on for a while.

Note to self--
*Stay off the internet for shopping!

Susan--Congrats on the mixer. You're going to love it!

I've done surprisingly well, although I had a little relapse yesterday. Here's the totals for this month so far:

Necessities
Food - $16 total for the whole month!!!
Gas - $0! My dad used my car the other day and he filled it up for me.
Car - $434 (insurance plus money to pay off the accident that I got into in May...luckily that'll be the last of that, and it'll go back down to $275 a month)

Luxuries
Yarn - $0! I am stunned by my excellence on this one.
Clothes - $29 on a dress and $35 on some shoes. I couldn't resist. :P

Susan -- That DOES seem like a great deal on a KitchenAid mixer. And you will eventually be able to sell it on Craig's list and I bet you will be able to get your money back on it...so it will basically be a no-spend purchase. I'd be happy too!

Frog -- Way to go! Sell that tie-dye stuff.

Sarah and Susan -- here's to a better August for all of us! We DO seem to be getting better at this stuff. Practice makes...well, better.

MamaLotus -- That CC in the freezer made me laugh! Good Plan. Here's hoping it works for you!

Isaiah's Mom -- : Grrr...that friend sticking you with the check would make me angry too.

BeachLivinMom -- I'd get it fixed, but that is just me. I'm a fixer.

Jenny -- Even with those last two purchases you are having a great July! Stick with it, Mama...you're doing fantastic!

Brooktosea -- What were some of the hard financial choices you made? Why do you think DH is wavering? I hope you two can reach an agreement. Finances are tough for every marriage.

Junonia -- Sounds like you are doing great. your post was inspirational to me. I'm trying to think like that too.

Tribe -- We miss you and we're sending you strong no-spend vibes. I hope you are out of that hotel and happily settled in your new home soon!

USMCBaby -- Welcome!

Carla -- Catch back up with us in August! Although you have been doing so well, you may not need this thread any more. You may be our first graduate.

Tarheelbaby -- That note about staying off the internet should be to me as well.

JessicaRenee -- Way to go!
