I wanted to share an inspiring blog I came across, Lunch In A Box. I am terrible about eating on the run, and I love these ideas for packing a lunch on the go.

Really wanted ice cream last night, and walked by a GREAT pizza place with the kids around dinnertime tonight, but bought nothing - instead the kids ate apples/bananas from the co-op on the walk home. I keep thinking about how the eating-out money we normally spend can be redirected to other priorities, and this is keeping me energized - hope the roll continues through the rest of the month!

I really wish I could take part. But my mom's coming out to visit. She lives on the east coast we are on the west coast. Anyway, I know we will be going out to eat at least 2x during her 9 day visit maybe more and while I know she will "treat" us to one of them. We will do the others. I'm just really looking forward to seeing my mom.

I think I could do it in august.

Well we had fast food today, we decided to get some KFC today so the total was $16 for both of us. Considering we normally eat out twice a week and it is now the 8th and it is our first time I am very happy.

Checking in, now that the DDs and I are back from our trip. My goal was to eat dinner out once, and expected I'd spend about $40 to feed the three of us. Instead, I spent about $40 on small splurges at fast-food places over the course of the five days we were on the road.

July 1: Zero
July 2: $8, Carl's Jr., hamburgers, fries, drinks., for 3 of us
July 3: On the road . . . $15, Subway, sandwiches, drinks, for 3 of us
July 4: Zero--spent day with relatives
July 5: On the road . . . $7, Carl's Jr., 3 chicken strips to share and drinks for 3 of us
July 6: Zero--spent day with relatives
July 7: On the road . . . $3 for ice cream cones for DDs, then $8 after got home, Carl's Jr., hamburgers, fries, drinks, for 3 of us
July 8: No eating out, but a horrendous grocery bill as we restocked the house after our trip!

Today was rough, but I got through it. We went to a small-town street fair thing, and it was hard to pass up the food, even though I'd brought snacks. I was salivating, and I did not want the cheese sandwiches in the cooler in the car. Then Sprogly was asking to order pizza, and it really sounded good. We bought some frozen, and spent a quarter what I'd have spent ordering it. Tasted better, too. Not as good as mine, but a lot easier.

So, today:

Came VERY close to calling DH + meeting up for dinner with kiddos after water started coming through the kitchen ceiling of our new old house - thankfully was just rain coming in an upstairs window with a/c unit + dripping through hardwood floor. Pulled a/c unit out, fed kiddos, + went to pick up some mostly necessary stuff at Target.

Today: Meh. A slice of pizza at Costco, $1.99...a traditional, prearranged bribe. Since it is a tradition, and to forgo pizza would have been a Big Deal, I did it.

Today I should get a gold star, because I got an opportunity to go out to eat as my mother and brother were over my house and mom got a call from dad saying he was on his way to eat with friends of the family and the two of them left to go. If DS wasn't throwing a post nap fit and DH was home, I might have been really really tempted, but as it was I just said no.

Woman saved from eating out expense by sleeping baby...had decided to stop in @ DH's work + meet up for dinner, did not want to spend the money, but was tired, hot, + unmotivated - however, DS fell asleep on the way from blueberry picking to dinner, so gave DD a granola bar that was hiding in my pocket and headed home.

Jumping in late here. We usually eat out once a month or less. This month it was twice--we had a seafood dinner for $40 while on vacation, and then the other night we got a pizza for $14. Usually we spend about $25 for Indian takeout once a month, so we are over budget.

I found that one thing that has totally kept me away from coffee shops is having a great selection of tea and coffee at home. I can now confidently say that I make MUCH better chai, hot or iced, than any place around here! In fact I turn up my nose at Starbucks etc. I buy great brands of chai teabags (currently Bigelow is my fave) and keep half and half, honey, and stevia on hand to sweeten it. The only place that makes a chai I will now drink is Panera, but there isn't one near here so I am not tempted to go.

We also buy a tasty brand of ground coffee (New England Coffee) that makes a great pot. We used to buy all organic coffee but it was too pricey.

I have various sized travel cups so we can take it with us. It saves a bunch of $$$.

much belated update . . .

i don't have specifics for totals (lordy, i need remedial frugality and finances), but these are my general positive and negatives for the last two weeks:

pros:
no eating out other than the traditional pizza on the two fridays
we've been great about bringing snacks to the pool and not getting ice cream
we've been great about bringing water bottles and not buying bottled

cons:
my coffee habit is still embarrassing

We found out that we're expecting a baby -- exhaustion and unsettled stomach have begun And we had an immediate family member in the hospital oven an hour from home. So, needless to say, we've been eating out a lot.

Maybe next month...

Have you ever made Chai from a black tea and added in the spices yourself? That's what we do and it is SO good. The only spice that is expensive is the cardamom, but a bottle of it will last quite a while, so it's still a good investment. We actually spice the milk instead of the tea, since DD likes to drink "chai milk". So, when we make it we'll just keep a pitcher of that in the fridge and add it to the tea we brew.

Thank you for reminding me about this. I actually have some tea masala that I could be using. I forgot all about it!

But if you can get the Bigelow on sale, it's reallly good!

Well, tonight I caved. It's my parents anniversary and they wanted to go out, luckily we just went to a fairly inexpensive place, so it only cost us $85 splitting the bill with my brother, we had $75 budgeted for my parents anniversary so all in all it was okay.

I did pretty well. One weekend, I went to a big festival thingy, and I gave myself a pass for the weekend, since I'd planned it so far in advance. So, that ended up being a little over $11 at the festival, and then about the same at the Burgerville on the way home. Add to that $1.99 pizza at Costco x2 (it's a kind of tradition).

So, much better than I've been doing lately. I was probably up to going out to eat 3-4 nights/week, plus once or twice eating lunch out because I hadn't managed to pack a lunch. Big difference.

I'm up for doing it again in August, but I'll need to give myself a pass for my vacation (mini-vacation, August 6-8) to eat out at least once then, especially if we go to the beach. Then once again the last weekend in August, when I go to a meet-up of some online friends, possibly in Seattle. The whole point of that is to have a restaurant meal, so I'm leaving that open.
