I have some great news ! In my initial post, I mentioned I needed to save due to the increased cost of my son's child care. We had planned to switch him to another provider, and it was costing us $200 more a month plus $700 upfront. It also meant less care, but we were willing to stretch for him to be happy.

Yesterday, I had to take dd to the dr . While we were waiting I noticed a flyer for a new program. It is a pre-K readiness program for our state. It said there were only 18 slots and started Monday. I just knew they were full.... I called and guess what.. he starts Monday. It is state funded except for $25 a week. He can go 8-2:30 which fits perfectly with my school schedule.

I went and toured the center(it is housed in a national daycare). He liked it too. I just hope it all works out. I am so happy considering we were going to have to pay $600-700 a month for childcare. My student loans would barely cover 3/4 of it. We are thrilled.
Thanks if you read this far. --

I will still be doing the challenge so as to save $$. I am not letting myself off of the hook just because of this change.

Aug 10-- no spending since DH took the car for work.

August 1
August 2
August 3
August 4 $10 (food for a BBQ)
August 5
August 6 $1.75 (snacks on my way home)
August 7 $2.35 (Starbucks breakdown)
August 8
August 9
August 10 $15 lunch w/friend + Taxi. I TOTALLY feel off the wagon. I had a meeting this afternoon so I had to take a taxi because I didn't schedule my time well, totally my fault. Lunch was not budgeted but it felt really nice to eat out with this particular friend, she always makes me

DH and I did not budget enough for "spend" money for the first half of the month plus things were really tight so there was no way to rebudget. It is all gone and we won't "refresh" that part of our budget until the 15th *sigh* it's going to be a long weekend.

I think we might fall off a bit tonight. :

DH really wants to go see the Simpsons movie...or Bourne Ultimatum....or Transformers. I have no desire to go, but we rarely go to the movies and DH wants to get out and have a date night. He also wants to go out to eat-I think I convinced him to go to the local deli (so yummy, more food, reasonable price) instead of a sit down chain with giagantic portions (think Chili's).

I'll update later with how it went-wish us luck!

I've been procrastinating this because I've been very very weak.

Aug. 1-3rd:
Aug. 4th: $145 at Wal-Mart, on CC.
Aug. 5th: $2.17 over budget at Costco - pretty good for us
Aug. 6 & 7:
Aug. 8th: $4.90 on bagel and coffee on the way to speech therapy
Aug. 9th:
Aug. 10th: chipped in $5 on company breakfast out.

So far - $12.07 spent cash
$145 on CC - I need to throw that damn thing away.

This doesn't sound bad accept for the CC. We have decided to leave all plastic at home (it's KILLING ME) and it has really helped. Good luck the rest of the month!

First ~ Welcome!!

Second ~ We are leaving the plastic (including debit cards) at home this month too, it is a little hard but definitely worth it.

Third ~ Hopefully this post will help you find it! I usually try to remember which page my last post was on good luck!

I just got busted! I *thought* I bought the kids new HippoSmile chairs with the cc. DH asked me this morning about a deduction from the bank account. I had no idea what he was talking about so I just looked at the transaction. I used the debit card instead of cc! In the long run, it's a good thing. DH isn't mad, either. He just called me nuts. And I just got home from the library. I checked out some books that I was going to purchase on amazon. That'll save us. And I also got Dave Ramsey's "Total Money Makeover." DH read one of his books a couple of years ago which originally got us off the cc's. Too bad I cave every now and then.

You can subscribe to the thread, too, right?

Dawn- what a blessing on the childcare! A huge burden lifted, I'm sure!

We had cut all of ours up. Then we called to have all but one account closed. Then we called and had cards re-sent from that account. I'm back to where I need to cut it up. I've also heard that you can call and ask them to lower your credit limit so you're almost forced to not spend extra money on the card.

I know this really isn't on topic but yesterday our business had a fundraiser and brought in over $3,000 for the local children's Hospital in Norfolk, VA. It was really crazy and stressful but the outcome was better than we expected. Hopefully it will be really helpful for someones child.

Summer ~ A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS on your house! You must be so thrilled!! : :

RuthieGirl ~ I was good today and didn't get one. However, I was bad (for my diet) and made coffee with lots of cream and had a cinnamon roll that I bought at the grocery store yesterday.

Crunchy*VT*Mom ~ YAY!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!! : You must be so incredibly happy!!!

August 7 :::
August 8 ::: My glasses were ready, but in order to get to my optometrist to pick them up, I had to put $10 in for gas -- not in budget but necessary.
August 9 ::: Venti latte and Bear Claw from Starbucks -- $7.00 cash -- not in budget ::: Groceries $56 -- budgeted
August 10 :::

The Weekend is here...and weekends are often hard for all of us.

It is garage sale season -- yes you can get some great deals, but if you don't NEED it, pass it by.

Is your partner home this weekend, itching to spend some money? Remember your example leads your family...can you talk him or her out of spending? Think of your long term goals.

(But if your partner spends, remember that's not your responsibility...you can only change your own habits)

Let's be strong and pull through these next two days together.

Don't worry, mama! A new week is starting soon... Have you tried that Faux Starbucks recipe in July's thread? It's awesome, and even cheaper if you just want regular coffee.

OOOOH! Got any left? Floats, that is, though the root beer itself isn't too bad either! Good thing I'm not going shopping in the near future, or you know what I'd be buying, and there'd go my !

Aug 9: $5 food(I really need to kick this Baja Fresh habit, but it will come out of food budget, and I had a coupon!), $8 at Target for cheerios, a coloring book for the little girls I'm watching tomorrow, and some candy for DH & I
Aug 10 DH on the other hand...

Spent money at the store on some things he needed but I didn't know he needed ($45-50? He didn't save the receipt so I'll have to wait for it to show up on the CC(we pay it off every month)). Then he spent an unmentionable amount on getting the car detailed.: I knew that he does this every few months but I have never personally kept track of our finances before(he still manages them, I just want to know where the money goes, too) so I've never asked how much it costs. I got angry, he said it's the only money he "wastes" and he wants the car to stay in good condition. Compromise: he will get it done twice a year and wash it himself in between.

Congratulations Prudence! Don't remember how old your girls are, but our 3 yo DD's favorite book this week (from the library) is "Baby On Board", a cheeky British month-by-month accounting by Kes Gray - we all enjoy reading it!
