Ok. I'm tired and ticked... A bad combination for posting, b/c UA violations are bubbling just beneath the surface here.

So to all of you, and I'm going to grit my teeth and stop thinking about this--or try to.
Oh I totally and completely hear you, mama. I've been thinking the same thing lately. My MIL was complaining about her finances (not knowing how bad ours are) and then went on to say how she just spent $50 at Kohls on some new clothes, just because. I was like : MAN what that $50 would've bought us!! But to her credit, she did pick us up a pack of diapers and goodnights just because she had coupons that were expiring and wanted to use them. Woohoo, I can't complain too much about that!

I asked Dh last night if we were going to be able to get some groceries this weekend. He said he didn't think so. The lady I babysat for still owes me $25 (from like 3 wks ago : ) and my brother has $25 for me from a bike of ours that he sold for us so if I could get that money we'd be able to at least get some stuff. The kids are so tired of eating toast! Luckily the Mennonite lady accross the street has had some really awesome fruits, veggies and eggs at her stand the past few days so we've been eating those. Yum! But still, I'd like to be able to at least get some cereal for the kids to eat for breakfast.

Anyone have any exciting plans for the weekend?

i totally hear you on the money front. These past few months have made me realzie just how much money we have thrown away in the past. :

I try to be thankful for what I do have and not get too caught up in the commercialism materialstic crap.

Cari, have you applied for foodstamps? I see you have kids under 5, you could do WIC. The income guidelines for WIC are almost double what they are for Foodstamps. Here in Wisconsin, for a family of 6 its over 4,000 a month. Are there any Food Pantries near you?

We are off to the in laws this weekend. THen my 5 year old is having her tonsils out on Friday :

: :Mama to 4 girls and Michael is here 9/11/09 We love :::

I feel this way, too, sometimes. I'm all for voluntary simplicity, and not having money sure makes the "voluntary" part easy. But it makes me feel better knowing that I'm not wasting the world's resouces, even if it's because I can't afford to. I try not to think so much about how other spend their money...it makes me too angry how much people take for granted.

heh, i was one of those ppl who used to spend $$ like water and didn't understand the meaning of "broke" it's lame how much money gets tied to self-worth in our culture. i am embarrassed to admit that i have dissolved into tears over passing by a 50cent sno-cone stand but having to save our change for a gallon of gas. i grew up with such a warped sense of entitlement that it still makes me crazy that we can't just buy whatever we need(want) when we need(want) it. sigh.

we were out of town all week--i am supposed to be checking the bank balance now but am avoiding it : i don't wanna know how much damage we did, even with my mom filling up our gas tank and taking us out to eat. dp got a heads-up on a job there for over twice what he makes here, pretty much a guaranteed position--but we can't get out of our lease for another 10 months! :

well, the bill collectors are harrassing me hardcore about Claire's medical bills--and i finally got her medicaid card today--yay! so at least i can get those UA violations off my back.

we finally got to go grocery shopping last week--omg i had to make two trips, b/c i got so much just in non-perishables that it barely fit in my tiny car! then getting it upstairs and put away was another ordeal! but it's awesome to have food in the house again yaknow i shop differently now. i don't buy prepackaged convience junk anymore, because i don't EVER want to be struggling to buy enough food again. : those foodstamps can stretch way better than pepsi and velveeta!

hugs to everyone here who is in a worse spot than we are at the moment

(well i guess i should check my bank balance before i say that.. )

ETA--OH CRAP they changed the pay schedule--we don't get paid for another week now!!! why why why just when things were looking up for us...

I guess this is where I belong now. We have always been broke : but now I really know the meaning of the word. DH's job is tied to the houseing market & well it used to be about 1/2 salary & 1/2 commission. However with the decline of the houseing market we've lost on average about $1000 a month in commissions. Last month was the 1st month that there wasn't enough to cover the bills (ie mortgage, car, utilities) not counting gas for the car & groceries etc...

We still are not really faceing the reality & spending more than we should as we have a small amount of saveings & credit cards to borrow from. I know how horrible that is & I am quickly faceing the reality, but getting DH there I think is going to be harder... I mentioned getting rid of cable today & he just looked at me funny

My FIL gave us money so I was able to start school at home for medical transcription. It will take me a good 6-9 months to finish school, but I should be able to find work quickly after that. Plus we are holding out hope that business will pick up even just a little so we can be in a better situation. Who knows I am still pretty depressed about it as I kinda feel smacked in the face by it & am angry I didn't realize it was happening sooner. Plus where the hell did all that money go before:

Have you looked into what your state law says about breaking a lease? Here they cannot charge double rent so if you break a lease you only have to pay rent until they rent the place again...here its no big deal. You can have a renter the next day.

Well I got the job at the organic place, but the pay is 3.00 less than what they listed on their website. My mom is here from texas so I won't be able to start till the end of August. If nothing else comes up I'll have to take the job as a last resort. Because some money is better than none.

I am just hoping that my other job works out and I can come back to work there. I've got my resume at several other places, but it makes me nervous since they're corporate type jobs.

My DH is getting less and less patient with me. I also think its because he doesn't understand what its like. Growing up, my father worked as a store designer, so when stores would do badly he'd lose his job, but he'd always get another one. My DH didn't grow up like that so I think he's stressed out.

Wonder why they advertised more than what they offered. Weird. I worked at a natural food store for a year and a half (and a couple of vitamin stores, too) and the pay there was pretty low. The nice part about the job, though, was all the free and discounted food. Congrats on the job..hope it all works out for you.

Hi everyone! I didn't see this thread last month so I'll jump in on this one.
We just moved in with my parents in June...dh, me and baby (and three kitties). We had been trying since December '06 to find ourselves a new place to live but were unsuccessful. The last two months of our lease at our apartment complex were rent-free so we saved up about $1500 only to use it because we had to beg them to let us stay longer while we looked for a new place. We were unable to find anything that we could afford in a place where we wouldn't run the risk of getting shot or robbed. My parents thought it would be a great idea to cram us in here so we could save money and maybe get a house or have a good sum to put on a nice rental. Well...
No one gets along. Let's get that out of the way. It's constant tension. I was in a car accident. It was at the accident that I realized I completely forgot about renewing my car registration the month prior. That's a $170 dollar ticket. The next day, I got a speeding ticket for $110. My car had to go to the shop. Of course, the other party has crap insurance that doesn't pay a damn thing and it'll be a fight for my insurance company to get anything from them. I need to get ds a new carseat. HE was about to outgrow it and GRaco says that you should replace the seat no matter how minor the accident. The level indicator has been off since the accident, so I need a new seat ASAP. Insurance company won't budge about covering a new seat so it'll be out of pocket for me. We took ds to the doc's office to be examined from the accident. She determined he is too small and would like to see us again. This also results in a visit from DHS. We have an appointment with her tomorrow but we are uninsured so we'll have to pay an a$$load for the visit out-of-pocket. CHIP seems to think it's fine and dandy to take months to decide if they'll cover ds or not.
DH is in grave danger of losing his job. He works for Wal-Mart so it's not a prize winning job anyway. He's had to take a day off because of my accident. He broke his nose at work and it was covered by workman's comp, but he has had to take time off for doctor's visits and the surgery. Wal-MArt, being the human rights violator it is, is using this against him and he'll likely be jobless in a few days. He had to take off a day because of the mess with the doctor and DHS. Another strike.
We haven't really saved much money. I have a huge student loan debt that may end up in collections. I'm hoping to get that fixed and get a payment plan ASAP. We also have a giant furniture bill that has been on our butt for the past 3 years. We owe for "damages" to our apartment. I have a hospital bill from ds's birth. We have a big vet bill. I have to pay $150 each month for storage since our stuff can't fit in my parent's house. We have to help my parents with utilities since they're struggling themselves. It's just one thong after another. Just when I think it can't get any worse, I remember that there's another outstanding bill out there.
DH is going to apply with Whole Foods. Please say prayers that he gets the job and that it's a good one. He's been beat up and treated like crap for 2+ years with Wal-MArt.
We're trying to find our own place to live. This is our biggest goal. Every odd is against us. Our big prayer is that we can buy a house but that would take a lot of luck. Rentals in this area are $1500 a month for anything decent. I couldn't even afford that for a house to own!
That's my short story.

My only advice to you is not to take crap from Walmart on the workers' compensation. Hire a lawyer. Sounds like the "holding your job over your head" tactic won't work since he is losing it anyway. Get a new job and hire a lawyer.

My goodness, Jenn! I'm so sorry for all your troubles! I hope things start looking up for you soon!!

As far as us getting foodstamps/WIC, my dh makes too much for foodstamps. We just got off of them a few months ago. I just looked and we do qualify for WIC, I thought for sure we were over for that too. I just may give them a call. We've been on it several times in the past and I have had bad experiences with them every time. But I'm way beyond caring about that right now, yk? If it puts food on our table I can deal with it. Thanks for the reminder!

Congrats on the job, sonrisaa, I hope it makes things a little easier for you!

Chandi, I've had 3 of my kids in for tonsillectomy/adenoidectomies so I can feel your angst. If its any consolation, my dd1 was 4.5 when she had hers out and she bounced back in no time--like asking for french fries to eat later that night! The younger they are, the better/faster they recover, at least that's been my experience. I hope your dd does well, I'll be thinking/praying for her!

I've decided to start CDing. I've been thinking about it for months and wish I'd changed over sooner but didn't really have the confidence. Amazing how not having enough $ for diapers gives you that confidence though! My dh is totally grossed out, he thinks CDing is just "disgusting" but whatever, he doesn't change diapers anyway so he can go fly a kite, lol. I've got enough CDs (prefolds) here for about a day now but I'll be scouring for deals on the TP and DS for some more. If I could find some fitteds and some covers--covers especially--I'd be all set. Hopefully someone buys some of my FS soon so I can have pp to buy some, otherwise I'm just gonna have to wait.

Sorry for the rambling, lol. I hope everyone has a good day today!

to all.

How come at least 3 of us poor families live in PA? Is it a crappy state like I think it is, or are we all just unlucky?

I snuck in some more time on the library computer today (had to type a letter to go with my birth affidavits for Rhi-rhi), I wish I had time to skim the thread better (not to mention last months ).

ok so while we didn't win the lottery: My Dh did join the army. It wasn't something we considered very lightly and we hemmed and hawed for a while but once we said yes it all happened very fast, and he's leaving in a week. We're by no means about to rich overnight /daydream but at least I will have a steady income coming in in a few weeks.

Meanwhile we've had no luck finding a new place but we are looking at an apt. today. I'm going to try to keep me and the kids where we are now (same city) while Dh is gone for several months. We have to move this week, not only did our landlord get a hold of his attorney today (well, I can't blame him, really) I want to get it all done before Dh leaves. I have so much to do my mind boggles, really, I can feel it physically boggling. :

I hope to check in soon and let everyone know how I am doing. I still can't get into many other websites but anyone is free to PM me here, that always makes me happy.

Have to submit now - hang in there mamas, I'm always thinking of you gals and your families.

i guess i could join in

i am a SAHM and DH is currently working as a bank teller....we do not make enough to pay our bills each month (which...we def live simple...no cable, etc.) He was playing poker online (sounds crazy i know. lol. actually that is the only way we have been able to save some money and make it up til now) but I think the financial stress has gotten to him, and he has decided that will no longer be feasible.

The most frustrating thing is that DH graduated w/ honors from undergrad with an econ degree...but everyone wants "experience". He realizes now he should have spent college doing internships etc but...too late. Our only option, it seems, is for him to go back and get his MBA. His parents have offered for us to live with them, so our student loan wouldn't have to include living expenses....but. I know he feels like a failure. It's so hard to watch him wrestle to provide for us...I know it's killing him. I have a degree in 2ndary ed. but our state is goofy and basically strong arms you into going for a master's in order to get your teaching certificate. Plus...DH does not want me to work (and I can't imagine leaving DD with anyone). We think we can make it until Jan. on what we have saved to make up for the difference in his paychecks...but then all our saving will be gone. I may substitute teach one day a week when my mom can watch Gianna...by then she'll be 8 months and maybe...I'll feel ok about it. If I sub at least 4 days a month that will make up for what we are lacking, but we won't be able to save much.

IF DH does the MBA program, he can't start until next fall, and so no we are trying to figure out how to make it until then...he's going to have to get a second job, I guess. We're not even totally "on our own" our parents still carry us on their car insurance....our cell phone is paid by my ILs since DH is still on their plan, and his uncle rents us a very nice apartment for dirt cheap, and no utilities (!! which is fab b/c we CD). I am so thankful for all the help we have and feel so blessed...but it's still hard to struggle. I think the hardest thing is watching DH work a job so beneath his education (that we of course have student loans to pay off) when I know he's so unhappy.

Congrats mamamoo - what a cutie!

queen_anne, I can relate to the student loan woes. We're paying $400 a month total for dh's and mine, and I don't think the cost of education was worth it. Maybe if I had actually graduated.

Jessemomme, congrats on dh's new job and good luck with everything.

caricandothis, I'm right there with you on the cd'ing. Need some covers, but will make do with what we have so we don't have to buy more disposables.

MrsMike, We pay $1400 for our rental (tiny 100+ year old, two bedroom house in a good neighborhood)...and this was the cheapest thing we could find that wasn't in an unsafe area. We were living with my inlaws for a couple of months yeah, that didn't work out so well.

Looks like I'm going to be searching for part-time work in the early mornings when dh is home. With all his overtime, we don't qualify for food stamps. The OT is off the books, so I could just not count it on the application, but I don't feel right about doing that. I'm sad about leaving the baby, but I have no choice. Now I just hope I can find a job. :

Where school are you going to?

I've been applying for jobs and sending out resumes again because my waitressing job isn't paying me crap. I'd forgotten how horrible the tips are in this town Even the waitresses who've been doing it for 10+ years and are way better at it than I am aren't making any money. Today I made a whole $15 in 3 hours : We can pay our bills, but I'd really like to find something that offers insurance, KWIM?

So, things were looking up for us... and then, of course, the cars died. We'd even had some money earmarked in my next check for repairs to my sedan, but now that and more is going to have to go toward fixing the "death rattle" in my Honda. It's awful when the 'good scenario' is a completely new brake system, you know?

How we are going to pay for this, I have no idea. I'm blessed that we have friends who are working at home and out of work and will let us have one of their vehicles on extended loan so I can keep working, which is awesome.

On the other hand... we had our 20 week ultrasound today, and it's a healthy, bouncing baby BOY! You could have knocked me over with a feather when they told us... I wouldn't have even believed it without the R-Rated shot between the legs. I was SO SURE we were having a girl! But now that I've had a moment to get used to it, I'm totally over the moon and exicted.

Is there a whole foods by you? They have a fairly generous benefits package. Also I'd look into in community college or university and see if they are hiring too.

Congratulations on the coming DS, mama! But sorry to hear about the cars... When it rains, it pours. I wish it weren't true, but so it seems. :

You can't make it on a waitress's pay/tips around here either. Don't know if it can be done anywhere these days. Keeping my fingers crossed that you find something more enjoyable and better paying!

Hmmm...perhaps it is a crappy state. I know the housing prices around here are ridiculous. A teeny tiny cape code that was barely bigger than our apartment was going for $350,000! And people bought it and paid that amount!!! Everything is getting overdeveloped and the high-priced McMansions and their tax abatements are driving up real estate costs for all the "real" houses around here. That's part of the problem for us...no place that's affordable enough (unless we want to get shot at twice a day, then there are some homes in North Philly with a ringside view to the action...).
Benefits and state aid in PA S-u-c-k big time.

Good luck with the Army and moving. I hope your dh got an awesome enlistment bonus.
