from me: shoes for both girls, $38 total. They needed them, and at least I kept shopping after the first 3 places, where
the cheapest i could find was $40 EACH.

From DH (Yay, he's doing this with me!): $4 for lunch at the company cafeteria, $3.15 for library fines.

Not too bad.

Sept. 1:
Sept. 2:
Sept. 3:
Sept. 4:

GOALS:
* Less than $150 in frivolous spending: month to date $0
* At least 20 days: 4/30
* No McDonalds: 4/30
* Avoid Target: 4/30
* Pack snacks/water for outings: 4/30
* NO library fines: month to date $0

Food shopping today + muffins at local cafe with kiddos; all within budget. DS' 1st birthday tomorrow; we are taking the day to go somewhere special; DH wanted to leave tonight + stay over, but I dissuaded him (combination of not wanting to spend $ + not wanting to pack). Will try to keep tomorrow's spending at a minimum and fun at a maximum. You are all making great progress!

But impulse food and treats are a big pitfall. We are on a very tight budget. My one indulgence is food--expensive organic treats that we often just don't need.

2)I specifically want to improve my ability to ration baked goods. We are staying in a one room cabin at the moment and I have use of a small kitchenette--medium sized fridge, sink, two burners, and some kind of convection/microwave oven that I find perplexing to use. I have family nearby and could use the full sized kitchen there if necessary. My main problem is that even when I prepare these treats they rarely last as long as needed. In terms of general health--I find it's better NOT to bake and keep sweet stuff around because it will be eaten. I eat less if I have to go buy sweets when I crave something--but I spend FAR more that way and get less for my money. I could bake two dozen cookies if I have a sweet tooth, or just go buy one at a bakery. But I'll spend 2$ per cookie at a bakery. Not to mention the gas to go there. Yet if I bake 2 dozen, instead of eating one expensive cookie, I eat 7 affordable ones!

3)My plan is....well, to stop by this thread and discuss the impulsive food items I'm thinking of buying, and brainstorm ways to "outwit" myself if I bake and stash treats in the house. I've thought about freezing treats so I can't eat them without planning. Idea's like that....okay, not much of a plan, but I'm working on it!
You could try to make up your own cookie dough and freeze it in little balls, so you can take out just the number you want to bake right then. That way you can save your $ and your waistline!

Sept 4 $10 misc items from dollarstore. Some useful like scrub brushes, other just pretty like little carved wood elephant.

Jeez, 4 days in and I've almost reached my grocery budget for the month. I did get a lot of great things today. Meat, turnips, carrots, beets, potatoes etc were on sale. A lot of stuff will go in the freezer so it's not one of those frustrating trips were you spend $$$ and it's gone in 2 days.

Budgeted spending this month:
Groceries 145/175
Gas 0/55
Gifts 13.75/50
Clothes 0/20

heartsmama - couple thoughts...are you getting enough to eat? If I'm full, I don't want seven cookies...and I LOVE cookies. If I'm not getting enough at meals I won't eat healthy no matter what. Or you could maybe make something cookie-like but a little more filling, like granola bars...then it's not all empty calories.

1-
2- $82 - $42 overdue internet bill, $35 really cute shirt, $5 "Eco" shampoo bar
3 -
4 - $99.59 in groceries, but stocked WAY up since it was 10% Tuesday...I was expecting my bill to come to more but actually did a reasonable job of sticking to the list for once. Also avoided Starbucks, which I did consider buying myself as a reward for keeping 10% Tuesday under $100 and went home to make myself a cappuncino.

unless you're like me and that's the way you prefer cookies, in which case they just become a freezer snack!

Heartmama... I have to agree with this. I used to eat toast or something in the mornings, and by 10:00 AM I would be RAVENOUS. Eventually someone told me I should be eating 2 or 3 good servings of fat in the mornings. I thought it would never work! But now I drink smoothies most mornings with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and one tablespoon of cod liver oil, and I have very little trouble controlling my cravings throughout the day.

Or if you don't like smoothies, just try to eat a higher fat breakfast. Your body probably just needs something to chew on, so to speak.

Ironically, drinking smoothies in the morning has saved me money in whimsical eating out at work. Who knew?

ok, here goes, i'm going to follow those who are not reporting gas and groceries as they are necessities.

9/1:
9/2: $5.00 drinks for party
9/3:
9/4: big day...$300 but all groceries and household necessities
9/5: $48 for chiro appt. for me, unavoidable. otherwise-

the weather has definitely turned to fall! i wore shorts today and was super chilly. sunny- but breezy. i'm feeling the need to buy more fall clothes, but i have to go through what i have at home first. dh and i do have personal allowances and anything we want personally comes out of that money. so i do have that, i just need to make it last, like thrift store instead of catalogue shopping.

Sept 1 - spent $7, saved $29.60
Sept 2 - spent $35.05 (groceries), saved $1.55
Sept 3 - spent $19.54 (eating out), saved $17.06
Sept 4 - spent $0, saved $36.60
Sept 5 - spent $36.97 (eating out) , saved -$0.37

Well I overspent my budget by $0.37 today . And it was completely avoidable, too. All on eating out. Sigh.

So my running total of money saved out of my budget for the month of September so far is $84.44 !!!

I never posted yesterday so here is my update

9/4- 7$ on gas
1.90 on a half gallon of milk
1.80 on eggs and bread

My 3 year old spent 10 dollars he had on new binocullars but that was his money not mine.

So total for the day $10.30

Today is going to be a spend free day, well because I have no money to spend lol.

We did manage to have a picnic at the beach, took a little swim, played in the sand and stopped at the nature center. We were gone from 10am this morning till 1:30 this afternoon, all for FREE

We made the muffins we took there from scratch last night, apple cinnomin muffins, some watermelon and cantalope, I brought coffee for me and chocolate milk for him. The nature center here is amazing and its free!

1: Stayed under budget on stops at hardware store, co-op, and vitamin store -- although spent $3.42 on faux M&Ms.
2: Spent $6.50 at fast food place while taking a break from 5-hour ER trip with husband.
3: No spending!
4. $2 to park at medical center
5: $18.65 on new M&M Accomodation Plan

Progress September Goals:
1/7 actual no-spend days
$29/<$75 in discretionary/preventable spending
0/0 lattes!
0/0 unfunded credit card charges!
and
figure out how to cheaply accommodate M&M habit: bought 48 pack of M&Ms at Costco today... SHOULD last 48 work days and save $38 in M&M purchases over the course of 12 weeks. And some calories, since these are standard size packets as opposed to the "tear 'em, share 'em" packets, which I DO NOT share.
